At least 15 Crusaders started the year by racing at the earliest possible opportunity! This was the Liffey Valley AC-organised Tom Brennan Memorial 5k in the Phoenix Park that this year for the first time started at 9:30. It has to be said that, given its druthers, the club might well have preferred to have held the race at its previous midday time on New Year’s Day. This would have allowed those who might also have run in the parkruns, of which there were at least 6 organised locally this year (of the 26 on offer), or otherwise needing time to emerge from their beds after late night celebrations, to participate. The early start, enforced nowadays by the OPW, might thus account for the slightly reduced turnout this year at 455 (490 in 2022), because it is otherwise an attractive event, well-organised and on a flat and reasonably fast course. In 2019 for example the race attracted a field of nearly 800. It was a relatively mild morning with only a little wind from the southwest. However, conditions were a little deceptive and the dampness in the air with the odd shower of rain led to runners getting to feel the cold quite quickly. The sun did make a brief appearance as many of us were turning onto Chesterfield from the Ordnance Survey Road for the first of two times and even made it difficult to see the bollards separating the new bike lane from the road the that we came upon almost immediately off the roundabout. Thankfully, it is unlikely that anyone did actually collide with any of them. The course is otherwise a well-trodden path on the tarmac roads, starting half way down Furze, heading west and with a hairpin turn onto the Ordnance Survey Road, which is ever so lightly uphill. The turn onto Chesterfield at the roundabout takes runners slightly downhill to another turn of the triangular lap back onto Furze, where runners pass through the finish line to start their second lap, repeating the route taken from the start. The roads are nice and wide and there was never any real congestion. The race was won in a sprint finish by Donore’s Abdel Laadjel from Stephen Cashin of Clonliffe and because the results order was by chiptime, they ran and were given the same time of 14:54 (gun time separated them by 1 second). The first Crusader in the field of 455 runners to cross the finish line was Joe McDermott who ran 17:19 for 40th spot (6th M35). Behind him came Paul Cowhie in 17:34 (45th and 2nd M55), followed by Cian Coughlan, the third member of the three-man team that came home in 6th place. Cian followed up his strong run last week in Athenry with a 67th place finish in 18:18. Next came Aoife Quigley, the first of our female scorers. Aoife confirmed her strong form with a time of 19:01 to place 83rd and 11th (3rd F35). Behind Aoife came James Cottle who found the going a bit tougher than he had been expecting, placing 116th and 2nd M65 in 20:01, with Amy Wright hard on his heels (120th overall, 20th female finisher and 5th F35) in 20:22. The third scorer on the ladies’ team was Irene Gorman who ran 20:40 for 130th and 25th places. The women’s team, with, like the men, two masters, placed 5th. Rebecca Fleming followed Irene, placing 132nd, 27th and 6th F35 in 20:45 and Rebecca was followed by Áine Crotty (154th and 37th in 21:09), Emer Kenny (169th and 44th in 21:54), Brendan Glynn (179th in 22:36), Gian Piero Allerta (228th in 24:13), Elad Solomon (236th in 24:36), Paul Kelly (285th in 28:00) and Alan Kavanagh (429th in 38:50) who was helping to pace another runner. The previous day, we had runners in a few events. Dee Lawlor combined a parkrun with the Kilkee Sub Aqua Club 10k where he led the field of about 50 home in a time of 39:39. Further afield, Thomas Vogée ran in the Bietigheim Silvesterlauf 11k, north of Stuttgart in Germany. On a looped course that had little level ground after the first 4k, Thomas reported that it was a constant battle in a race that had to be shortened to approx. 10.75k because of construction. He achieved a creditable time of 40:49 for the distance and reported that it was fun running for a time next to Alina Reh who placed 3rd for Germany in the European XC championships in December. We should also mention that on the last day of the year Leo Lundy completed his 350th marathon (achieved over several years) and chose a track in Celbridge in Co. Kildare for the occasion, running around 5:50:00 for the distance. Many congratulations to Leo! As mentioned above, there were parkruns on offer on both days of this weekend (as we discovered was also the case over Christmas (and last week’s race report has been updated accordingly)). On Saturday we had just two first finishers, with Fiona shine running in Gorey, placing 11th overall in a field of 75. Fiona’s time was 22:51 and she was followed by her sister Lisa who placed 13th and 2nd in 23:10 and by her mother Mairin (41st and 17th in 29:49), and then we saw Kevin Fitzgibbon head over to Castletown where, in a field of 136, he ran 17:36. Dee Lawlor capped his 10k exploit with a 2nd place finish in Vandeleur Gardens in Kilrush, Co. Clare In a field of 49, Dee ran 19:09. Peter O’Toole ran in the first of two parkruns on consecutive days in Waterworks, Belfast. Peter placed 2nd in the field of 199 in a time of 18:17, whilst Ronan Moynihan took 3rd place in Lees Road in Ennis, Co. Clare. Ronan’s time was 18:55 and the field measured 48. Darina Scully ran in Enniskillen alongside 103 other runners, where she placed 28th and 4th in 24:10, whilst Sharon Woods joined 9 other Crusaders in Poolbeg, where she placed 16th and 4th in 23:17. In the smaller-than-usual field of 66, Sharon was followed by John Lohan (27th in 24:36), Tara Murphy ((28th and 5th in 24:57), Aoife Cowhie (32nd and 9th in 25:37), Cliodhna O’Reilly (34th and 11th in 26:23), Gian Piero Allerta (38th in 26:41), Olwyn Dunne (39th and 14th in 26:42) running the parkrun as part of a marathon challenge, Maureen McGinley (44th and 17th in 27:59), Mari Hansen (56th and 25th in 32:22) and Niamh Trihy (60th and 27th in 33:15). Anthony Owens joined 80 other runners in Fairview where he placed 6th in 21:53, whilst Tim Hyland ran in Dundalk with its field of 79, where he placed 39th in 28:34. Kris Ryan continues to run in Australian parkruns. This Saturday she ran once again in Paradise Point where she placed 121st and 25th in a time of 27:30 and in field of 354. Then, Orlaith de Burca joined a field of 130 in Shanganagh to place 101st and 41st in 30:42. Diarmuid Byrne ran once again in Poppintree where he placed 14th in a field of 116 and a time of 21:55, whilst Karl Walsh placed 26th in Naas in a time of 23:41 The field there measured 128. Luke Haran ran 22:32 for 18th spot in a field of 61 in Mungret, whilst Mairead Cashman also ran the first of two parkruns this weekend, this one in Kilcock, where she placed 50th and 11th in 29:06. The field measured 94. Finally, for Saturday, Phil Sykes joined 307 other participants in Marlay Park where he placed 68th in a time of 23:22. On New Year’s Day we had runners in at least 4 of the 26 parkruns on offer. Margaret Foley joined a field of 87 on Inch Beah where she placed 14th and 2nd in a time of 23:56, whilst Peter O’Toole ran the second of his parkruns of the weekend this time in St. Anne’s where he placed 2nd behind Mick Clohisey in a time of 17:32 and in a field of 211. We had at least 6 runners in Poolbeg, all running their second parkrun of the weekend. In a field of 96 our contingent was led home by John Lohan (23rd in 22:04) and John was followed by the amazing Olwyn Dunne (following her marathon exploit of the day before) (45th and 8th in 25:20), Tara Murphy (61st and 17th in 27:59), Mairead Cashman (68th and 22nd in 28:52) and Mari Hansen (70th and 24th in 29:18). Lastly, Mairin and Lisa Shine ran on Wexford Racecourse again where Mairin placed 35th and 10th in 31:39 and Lisa was given the same time for 36th and 11th. The field measured 58 in total.
