There was some excellent racing over the weekend, particularly in a new race down in Cork. Below are the results. Before we start, however, in the last report we missed Simon Everard’s exploits in the Scottish Masters indoor championships in Glasgow last weekend. Our London-based Irish exile managed to take gold in the men’s 400m in his age category (albeit in a small field) in a time of 54.58. He also took home bronze medals in both the 60m and the 200m with respective times of 7.75 and 25.22. Congratulations to him. On Saturday morning, in the last BHAA cross-country races of the season, several Crusaders headed out to the university grounds in Maynooth for the annual running of the 2 and 4 mile races there, organised by AIB. On what is a flat course in overcast but mild conditions, we had three of our members compete in the modest 31-strong women’s 2 mile race. Once again, Katie Rogers distinguished herself with a 3rd-place finish in 12:47, followed by Rachael Yorke in 5th (13:22) and coach Susan Walsh (21st in 15:27). The second race of the morning was the mixed 4-mile event. Karl Walsh was our lead runner home in 10th place in a smallish field of 86 and a time of 23:07. Karl was followed by Brendan Glynn (44th in 26:56), Robbie Moore (50th in 27:21) and coach Mike McGovern (65th in 29:12). Members will be interested to hear that Sean Murphy, who trains with the club, crossed the line in 13th place in a time of 23:31. A new event in the racing calendar took place on Sunday down in Kinsale in Co. Cork. Clearly intending to fill the gap left by the recent discontinuance after 40 years of the Ballycotton 10, the organisers are likely to have created a firm favourite going forward. The inaugural event saw a field of nearly 650 finishers, included in their number 15 Crusaders. It is likely that none of them came home disappointed. Described as nice conditions but hilly in places, particularly in the last mile or two against a stiff breeze, the female contingent was led home by Irene Gorman who took 2nd place (54th overall) in what is possibly a PB time of 66:47. Irene was followed home in 6th place (3rd in her age category) and 86th overall by Alma Hanevy in her first race since coming back from injury. Further back, side by side, came Lisa and Fiona Shine with the same time of 84:17 (331st and 332nd overall, 69th and 70th women home). The men also ran extremely well. They were led home by Michael O’Conor, whose decent weekly mileage is paying dividends. Michael ran 56:42 (a likely PB) for 4th place, followed closely behind by Michael Kiely in 5th spot (56:54) and Shane Collins (6th in 57:12). John Mulvihill was next, to complete a top 10 finish (9th in 57:31) and he was followed by Ciaran Diviney two places later in 57:51 and 3rd in his age category. Other top 50 places went to Ger Forde (19th in 59:12), Joe McDermott (27th in 60:36), Joe Walsh (32nd in 61:45) and Eugene McDonough in a PB time of 62:17 (34th) in hot pursuit. We also had excellent runs from Niall O’Connell (105th in 71:52) and Tim O’Donnell in a possible PB time of 72:53 (120th). Also on Sunday, we had a few participate in an IMRA mountain running event. Set on Trooperstown Hill in Co. Wicklow it was described as a 9.7k race on difficult terrain with a 380m ascent. It was also made more challenging by the misty conditions experienced in the mountains on that day. Brendan Murphy distinguished himself by coming over the line in 2nd place (41:01) and he was followed home by Brian McGuckin (33rd in 50:18) just getting back from recent injury. Laura Flannelly (49th overall and 7th woman) was next in a time of 53:16 and the contingent was completed by Berndt Heim (113th in 7:55). The field measured 126 runners. We may well have had runners in the Wicklow Hospice races on Sunday, but at time of print, results were not available. The report will be updated if there were any of our runners involved. The parkruns continue to flourish along with the participation of Crusader athletes. This weekend saw strong involvement from our clubmates. We start, as usual, with those recording podium places. In an event that saw 13 Crusaders participate, we had first place finishers among both men and women in Poolbeg. Stephen Hurley crossed the line in a time of 17:58, whilst Aine Kenny ran 20:17 for 22nd place overall. In St Anne’s, Joe O’Donoghue was first finisher in a time of 17:17, whilst Kieran Little ran 18:03 for first place in Clarisford. Another first place finish was recorded by Sarah Lyons in Mullingar, with a time of 21:45 and 13th place overall. Finally, Fiona and Lisa Shine, in preparation for Kinsale the following day, took podium places in Glen River, with Fiona first finisher in 11th spot overall in 21:38, followed by Lisa who ran 24:49 for 26th place overall and 3rd female. Returning to the overall results, Liam Lyster was our lone representative in Strokestown where he took 14th place in 27:25, whilst Luke Haran came home in 6th in Mungret in 20:51. Brian Carroll took on Griffeen, and finishing in 5th place in 19:42, whilst Dee Lawlor crossed the finish line in 10th place in Shanganagh in a time of 20:21, followed by Orlaith de Burca who placed 66th overall, 14th female in 26:07. In St. Anne’s Raheny, Joe was followed by Emer Kenny (314th overall, 83rd female, in 28:04) and Lorraine Fitzsimons (439th and 167th in 31:49). In Malahide, Ronan Moynihan took 12th place in 19:26, followed by Darina Scully with an impressive 32:54 (322nd and 125th), whilst, in Marlay Park, Anthony O’Reilly placed 25th in 20:04 followed by Mary Noelle Rohan (429th and 151st in 33:08). Poolbeg continues to show impressive numbers and Stephen was followed by Kenan Furlong (4th in 18:51), David Timoney (16th in 19:46), Kieran Finucane (18th in 20:03), Russell Murphy (42nd in 22:26), Fiona Bane (48th and 6th in 22:48), Neil Brown (59th in 23:23), Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos (63rd and 10th in 23:26), Ali May Hann (86th and 20th in 24:29), Maureen McGinley (152nd and 56th in 28:03), Don Anderton (189th in 32:38) and Sharon Woods tailwalking in her 99th parkrun (225th and 65th in 45:26). In Tolka Valley we saw Cormac McGuire run 22:55 for 12th place, followed by Maria Pertl and Diarmuid Byrne (respectively 39th (12th) and 40th in the same time of 28:11). Brian Scanlan was our sole runner in River Valley where he placed 4th in 20:31, whilst Mairead Cashman ran in Bushy Park once again (164th and 50th in 29:20). Declan Connor ran in Corkagh (8th in 21:28), whilst Brian Carroll took on Griffeen (5th in 19:42), followed home by Colm Foley (44th in 23:56). Finally, we had a few runners in overseas parkruns as usual. Kris Ryan ran once again in Paradise Point in Australia where she placed 36th and 7th in 23:00 in a field of 222, whilst Aidan Hudner ran in Glasgow in a field of 478 where he took 84th spot in 22:05. Then, in Queenstown, New Zealand, Paul and Aoife Kelly ran with 94 other participants with Paul taking 13th place in 22:51, followed by Aoife (24th and 5th in 24:04).
