Baked Apple: Tough conditions for marathoners in New York. New Course for Dublin Seniors

8/11/2022

PictureLorraine Healy, Maura Mahoney and Isabelle Cairns
From a racing point of view in Ireland, it was a lot quieter this week. We had a few runners in the new location for the Dublin Seniors XC, but unfortunately not enough to make a team,  plus a runner in the Corofin 10 mile loops, but little else was on offer.

Instead, many of us were glued to the marathon action from New York where weather conditions were unhelpful to PB performances.

We focus, initially on the Dublin senior XC championships which took place on a former golf course in City West. Three Crusaders contested the women’s race with its small field of 33. On an undulating course of 4 laps of about 1500m in windy and relatively mild conditions, the race was won by Raheny’s Niamh Kearney in 22:01, 6 seconds ahead of DSD’s Meghan Ryan. First across the line for Crusaders was Maura Mahoney in 25th spot and in a time of 25:58. Maura was followed by Lorraine Healy (29th in 27:26) and behind her came Isabelle Cairns in 30th place with a time of 27:37. We had only one runner in the men’s 10k. Its slightly larger field of 45 was led home, unsurprisingly, by Efrem Gidey who won easily in a time of 31:22. Daniel Lowe of this parish placed 41st in 40:11, a decent time for a XC 10k!

In New York on Sunday, the shade temperature at marathon start on Staten Island was in the region of 19 degrees Celsius, and with even the faster runners only setting off just after 9 am, by the time most had finished in Central Park the temperature had soared to 23 degrees, quite an uncomfortable challenge, even for those who had trained in Summer weather. In addition, it was always going to be a big ask for at least one of our runners, Ciaran Diviney, who had run the week before in the Dublin marathon. Ciaran needed NY to complete his collection of the six so-called marathon “Majors”. Ciaran did indeed suffer with leg cramping towards the end which required him to slow down and his 3:05:26 finish was a real credit to him given the situation. Triona Quill also made the journey over to the US and her 3:40:15 finish was super in the circumstances and not too far off what she might have expected to run in Dublin the previous weekend. Following his recent run in the Amsterdam marathon, Bob Manson ran 4:57:34 enjoying the experience, as did Triona. Our exile in Canada, Ian Kinsella, also took part and possibly having had the benefit of recent high temperatures in North America was able to run 2:47:40. Finally, in a race with a higher-than-normal attrition rate, but still with nearly 48,000 finishers, Liam O’Brien ran 4:22:52.

As mentioned above, Áine Kenny took part in the Corofin Loops 10-mile race, a one lap circular course. She described it as windy and hilly (particularly after the first, slightly easier, 7 miles). In a field of 77, Áine placed 3rd female finisher (13th overall) behind Kate Kelly, in a time of 69:50, only Áine's second time breaking 70 minutes for the distance.

All that remains is to mention the parkrun results from the weekend. Emiliano Sanchez and Darina Scully distinguished themselves with first place finishes in River Valley Park. Emiliano led the field of 102 home in 20:52, whilst Darina also placed 17th in 24:53. Paul McNamara followed his exploits in last week’s marathon with a first finish placing in Mungret where, in a field of 124, he ran 18:57. Michael Wycherley surprised himself by taking first place in the 135-strong field in Poolbeg. Michael’s time was 18:44, with Áine Kenny, the day before she ran Corofin, taking 2nd place in the women’s event (32nd overall) in 23:10. There were 14 Crusaders running in Poolbeg on Saturday morning, including Tim O’Donnell (5th in 19:50), Simon Kenny (7th in 20:30), Patrick Duffy (14th in 21:02), Anthony Owens (15th in 21:10), Kevin Lambe (19th in 21:37), Paul Campbell (36th in 23:24), Emily Glen (48th and 6th in 24:42), Aitor Arribas Velasco (52nd in 24:55), Charlotte Rufié (56th and 11th in 25:02), Franky Keane (68th in 25:49), Kevin Kenny (69th in the same time) and Mari Hansen (128th and 47th in 36:50).

John Lohan and Tara Murphy ran in Fairview. In a field of 3107, John placed 8th in 21:27, whilst Tara placed 33rd and 3rd in 25:45). Sharon Woods ran in a new parkrun in Dodder Valley, in a substantial field of 341, Sharon ran 22:32 for 45th and 5th places, whilst Kate Murray ran 24:45 in Tymon Park for 19th and 2nd places in a field of 84. We had several Crusaders in St. Anne’s Parkrun.  Irene Gorman ran 21:40 for 58th and 4th places, followed by Michael Maughan (86th in 22:33), Paul F. Kelly (246th in 28:25) and Cian Coughlan and Áine Crotty tailwalking. The field measured 485. In Maraly, with its field of 359, Aoife Cowhie ran 25:37 for 135th and 30th places, whilst Mairead Cashman placed 110th and 35th in Kilkenny where, in a field of 154, she ran 31:51. We had two runners in Naas. Karl Walsh and Michelle Geoghegan joined 104 other runners there, with Karl taking 10th spot in 21:12 and Michelle crossing the finish line in 79th and 19th places in 31:58.

Sarah Lyons headed off to Milton Keynes for the weekend where she joined 457 other participants, placing 23rd and 4th in 22:17, whilst Emer Kenny took advantage of a trip to see Manchester City with her family, running in Stretford alongside 579 other runners. Emer placed 160th and 32nd in 25:10. John Rooney placed 22nd in the 74-strong field in Sligo with a time of 24:39, whilst Diarmuid Byrne ran in Poppintree once again, placing 85th in 30:45 in a field of 143. Jill Nason was our lone runner in Shanaganagh, taking 79th and 22nd places in 27:23 in a field of 159, whilst Lisa and Mairin shine ran in Cabinteely, where Lisa placed 63rd and 20th in 29:54 and Mairin tailwalked. The field measured 109. Lastly, Aidan Hudner ran once again in Pollok in Glasgow where, in a field of 233, he ran 24:18 for 50th spot.
