Battle Honours in the Leinster 10 Mile championships

22/4/2019

The club had a pretty good return for its efforts on a warm and not too breezy Easter Monday morning in the Leinster 10 mile championships held in conjunction with the Battle of Clontarf 10-miler. Held entirely within the confines of St. Anne’s Park, a familiar hunting ground for many of us, the race had many twists and turns to keep it as such. Several of the runners reported that it was a tough outing as a consequence. However, 6 of the 11 athletes who represented the club in the championships came home with medals, both individual and team.

Kieran Little won the race in style, despite intending to treat his first competitive outing of 2019 with a race number on as a tempo run. His margin of victory over the 2nd placed runner was a decent 17 seconds with his winning time of 54:17, but then came Italo Giancaterina for a well-earned 3rd place, running 54:40. In a field of 445, Daniel Lowe was our next runner across the line, taking 22nd place in 1:01:00 and having only decided late the evening before to run the race after finding out that late entries were being accepted on the morning. Daniel’s participation enabled our top 3 men possibly to take 2nd place in the team event (although this is subject to confirmation).  Next came Ciarain Kelly (30th in 1:02:00), Patrick Needham (55th in 1:05:23) and Robbie Moore (135th in 1:12:55). The women did well too. Behind the surprise but well-deserving victor, Florence Curley of Donore, Aine Kenny took 5th place (100th overall) and 2nd F35, followed by Dee Ni Chearbhaill (150th overall, 17th woman, in 1:14:29) and Olwyn Dunne (172nd overall, 25th woman finisher, in 1:16:25) and 3rd F50. The three leading Crusader women won the O/35 women’s team gold with their sterling efforts. Liz Nixon (248th and 59th in 1:22:20) and Carina Davidson (276th overall and 72nd in 1:23:59) completed the contingent. Well done to all!

The week of racing began, however, before Easter, with a trail race organised by IMRA on Wednesday evening down in Wicklow in the Glen of the Downs involving 171 runners.  On a mild evening we had at least 7 athletes participating in the 7.15k run on relatively easy terrain, involving a climb of 200m. Warren Swords was first man home for the club, placing 5th overall and 2nd M40 in a time of 30:40, less than a minute behind the winner. Michael Maughan ran an excellent race to place 37th in 35:38, with Brian McGuckin placing 48th and 6th M50 in 36:42. Next came Gavan Doherty, finding his competitive legs again, and placing 49th in 37:29 and he was followed by Laura Flannelly (66th overall, 5th woman, in 38:02). Making her debut in IMRA racing, Dorothy Maguire completed the contingent, taking 91st spot overall (10th woman) in 41:13.

As Gary Park reported earlier in the week, Colin Quirke should be congratulated on his new Crusaders record in the discus in La Jolla California on 13 April. Colin threw 60.02m to add nearly a metre to his previous best throw. His mark ranks him as 19th in Europe and only the 3rd Irishman to have thrown over 60m.

Closer to home, Leo Lundy reported that over the Easter weekend he ran  his 89th and 90th ultramarathons. These took place in London where the temperatures were scorching. it is good to see that Leo is finally back from injury.

Finally, there were loads of results on which to report in the parkruns on Easter Saturday. As usual, we start with the first finishers of which there were several from the club and the podium places. Kieran Little headed a cast of thousands in Poolbeg where he ran 16:41. Likewise, Peter O’Toole was a first finisher in Waterworks, Belfast, running 17:26 ahead of a field of 271 runners whilst Catherine Thornton ran within her limits to place first finisher (5th overall) in Knocknacarra. A podium place went to Stephen Hurley in Poolbeg where he finished a close second to Kieran in 16:43 and they were followed by Donnacha McCarthy who was guided to 7th place in 19:07. Donnacha was followed by Zlatko Kulic (11th in 20:20), Ava Rose Clarke (72nd and 18th in 25:00), Donna Barry (90th and 28th in 25:36), Mari Hansen (94th and 30th in 26:01), Cliodhna O’Reilly (103rd and 34th in 26:39), Paul E. Kelly (118th in 28:02), Aisling O’Connor (153rd and 52nd in 31:39), Don Anderton (154th in 31:40) and Sharon Woods tailwalking. Fiona Bane ran in Monaghan and placed 25th overall (6th) in 26:16, whilst Brendan Glynn ran in Portumna, also placing 6th in 22:15. Liam Lyster came home in 18th (27:28) in Strokestown, whilst Michael Wycherley headed to the Isle of Wight for Easter, running in Medina where he placed 5th in 18:58 in a field of 444. Ciaran Smyth also ran in the UK, in Canterbury, where in a field of 151 he placed 12th in a time of 21:38. Ronan Moynihan took 6th place in Malahide in 18:18, followed by Brian Scanlan (8th in 18:20) and Aoife Cowhie (140th and 27th in 24:19). Francis Furey joined Catherine in Knocknacarra where he placed 64th in 26:42, whilst Maria Kennedy ran in Kilkenny where she placed 41st overall (6th woman) in 23:16. Mairin Shine placed 155th (and 67th) in Johnstown, Wexford, in a time of 45:36, whilst Olwyn Dunne and Orlaith de Burca ran in Shanganagh where Olwyn came home in 34th (5th) in 24:00 and Orlaith finished in 80th (and 21st) in 26:30. Luke Davis took 6th spot in Cabinteely in 19:39, followed closely by Barry O’Mahony (7th in 19:40) and Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos (32nd and 5th in 24:09). Lastly, Paul and Aoife Kelly ran in Tramore, where Paul crossed the line in 18th (an excellent 20:29) and Aoife finished in 44th spot overall (9th) in 23:07.
