A lot of rain fell this weekend and it made for extremely challenging conditions in the BHAA cross country races held in Cherryfield Park in Firhouse late Saturday morning. The course, a mixture of circuiting GAA pitches and rough parkland, was pretty much waterlogged and extremely muddy, particularly on the couple of small hills involved. Thankfully, there was little wind, but it was bitingly cold on the day in the rain and the conditions made it quite difficult to run properly. Unusually, the BHAA event came only 7 days after its first races of the year, which may have deterred a few runners, but we had a decent turnout of 14 participants all the same. We had 4 finishers in the 2 miles women’s race, led almost from gun to tape by Irene Gorman, in her second comeback race in the last month, running strongly from the start. Irene’s time of 12:40 was impressive in the conditions, as was that of Ilona McElroy who came home in 2nd place (12:50). Our next official finisher was Serena Moloney who took 11th place (13:53) in the field of 43 runners and Serena was followed home by Mairead Cashman (41st in 19:54), in what appears to have been her second event of the morning. The men’s (mixed) 5 mile race involved a field of 132 with victory, unsurprisingly, going to Sean Hehir in a time of 26:55. In the strength-sapping conditions, and on a swampy course totally cut up from the women’s race, it was great to see Michael Wycherley go from strength to strength and placing 11th in 29:53, just 25 seconds behind Laura Shaughnessy marking a comeback from a leg injury that had kept her out for a few months. John McAuley was next in 17th position (30:37), followed by, Michael Maughan (30th in 32:21). Tom Dunne, another BHAA regular, had a stormer of a race, placing 55th in 34:48 ahead of Brendan Glynn who ran well to take 57th spot (35:01). Brendan was followed by Karl Walsh (59th in 35:18), Pat Quill (63rd in 35:31), Robbie Moore (73rd in 36:26), Neil Brown (88th in 38:13) and coach Michael McGovern (104th in 39:28). A few events were missed off last week’s report. The first has already been reported by Bob Lyne on Facebook (indoor athletics at the Munster masters Championships): John Caird won silver (O40) last weekend in the 60m sprint with a time of 8.22. John O' Loughlin (O50) won gold in both the 400m (59.94) and the 200m (26.71) and also a silver in the 60m (8.19). The 200m and 400m for John were championship bests. Bob Lyne won gold in weight for distance with a PB of 6.21m and silver in high jump and shot put. The week before he won a silver in Munster racewalking 3k with a time of 18: 51. We also need to record the Art O’Neill Challenge that started in the dead of night on Friday/Saturday of last weekend from Dublin Castle, ending up in Glenmalure in Wicklow, commemorating the famous escape in 1592. In the 10th running of the event, in difficult wet and cold weather, some 80 runners finished the ultra-marathon mountain event out of a total of 145 finishers running, trekking or walking. There were perhaps as many as 50 who dropped out because of the tough conditions. The race was won by Andrew Tuckey in 5:29, but a Crusader appeared on the podium with Warren Swords taking 3rd place in a time of 5:49. Des O’Brien came home in 61st place (9:56), followed by David Timoney who took part in the hybrid element of the event (102nd in 13:20). Then, on Sunday, in altogether drier conditions, but on difficult terrain, we had at least 4 runners in an IMRA winter league race in Howth over 5.7km, starting from the Deerpark golf course at Howth Castle and climbing more than 250m. The race was won by Javier Hernando in 30:19, leading home 226 runners. Becky Quinn was the first Crusader home in 31st place overall and winning the women’s race in 34:46. Becky was followed by Laura Flannelly (67th overall, 6th woman) in 38:45 and by Tim O’Donnell (210th in 55:37). This weekend, the IMRA runners were out again on Saturday morning. In a race on Hellfire over 6.4km and a climb of 240m, the event, with 170 runners, was won by Conor O'Keeffe in 34:08. Our three Crusaders acquitted themselves well. Becky Quinn took 33rd place, 2nd woman finisher (1st F40), in 40:11 and Becky was followed by Laura Flannelly (45th overall, 3rd woman) in 41:49. Ali Onur Uyar also took part in the race, placing 60th in 43:01. There were a few parkruns on which to report. Members will be interested to learn that Kris Ryan continues to run in Coomera, placing 17th overall, 2nd female finisher, in 23:18 in a field nearly 150 strong. Newcomer and marathoner Kieran Little was a first finisher in Clarisford in Killaloe, Co. Clare. Kieran ran with 39 other runners, recording a time of 18:18. There were second place finishes in the women’s events for Fiona Bane in Waterstown and Sarah Lyons in Fairview. In a field of 72 Fiona ran 23:57 to place 11th overall, whilst Sarah ran in a field of 115, recording a time of 23:39 and placing 17th overall. Kate Murray also appeared on the podium by placing 25th overall, 3rd woman home, in a time of 23:41 in the 132-strong field in Donabate. A few events to note: This is the first time possibly that a Crusader has run in Castlewellan near Newcastle, Co. Down. Leo Lundy was that runner, placing 45th in a field of nearly 150, in a time of 24:57. Mairead Cashman ran in Bushy Dublin before the BHAA race, coming home in 102nd place overall (30th woman) in 29:37, in a field of nearly 130 runners. Matt Cranley returned from sickness to place 21st out of 407 runners in St. Anne’s. Matt’s time was 19:58 and he was followed by Lisa Shine (162nd overall, 27th woman, in 26:08) and Lorraine Fitzsimons (301st overall, 99th woman, in 31:07). Meanwhile, Gillian Curran was 5th female finisher (41st overall) in Poolbeg. Gillian’s time was 25:36 and she was preceded by Russell Murphy (24th in 23:17) and Colm Foley (34th in 24:16) and followed by Aisling O’Connor (50th overall, 9th woman, in 27:06) in a field of 104. Natasha Murray placed 120th overall, 36th woman, in Tymon among 137 runners, with a time of 40:43, whilst, in Marlay Park, Anthony O’Reilly took 20th place (20:08) and James Ryan, 49th spot (22:03) in the nearly 500-strong field.
