We should be so proud of our athletes. A good number were competing this weekend and there were some excellent performances in the races we entered. We start on Thursday evening with the Sandyford 5k, organised by DSD and in its 5th year. The course, which is relatively flat, would have been wet, although the rain had largely eased off by the time the race started. In a field exceeding 700, Edel Haverty made a good return to racing with a last minute decision to run, finishing 81st overall and 6th woman across the line in 21:33. Edel was followed by Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos (138th and 20th in 22:13), Olwyn Dunne (147th and 22nd in 23:16) and Neil Brown (287th in 25:49). Then on Saturday, there were several distances from 18km to 80km held in Co. Wicklow held on trail. We had at least 3 runners in the 28km race which inter alia covered Little and Great Sugarloaf mountains (Little twice). They were led home by Warren Swords who placed 2nd in the field of 322 in a time of 2:27:09 and Warren, who is training for the Dublin marathon, was followed by Dee Lawlor (31st in 2:59:16) and Christophe Marsan (another marathoner in training) who ran 3:20:32 for 80th place. Also, on Saturday, our exile in Texas, Yvonne Macauley, ran in a 10km race in Fort Worth where, in a field of 308 and hot conditions, she placed 4th overall and 2nd female finisher in a great time of 39:19. Sunday was chockful of events, both at home and away. We had 13 athletes in the Berlin which was run this year in cool and rainy conditions (dry until the second half of the race) which were ideal for runners who have trained in Ireland (Kevin Seaward ran the fastest marathon by an Irishman in 20 years in 2:13) and also produced a winner (Ethiopian Kenenise Bekele) who narrowly failed to improve on the World record, missing it by only 2 seconds! As a result of the helpful conditions we had some super times recorded, with a few impressive PBs. First across the line was our exile in Berlin, Stephen Moore. Stephen found the last few kilometres tough, but still posted an impressive time of 2:37. Stephen was followed by Rob Cross (2:38) and Frank Halligan (2:39). Both are likely to run Dublin as well. Before the race Frank had indicated he was going to treat it as a training run, particularly as he is coming back from injury, so he would have been delighted with the outcome, with even splits. Joe Walsh was next with both an impressive PB time of 2:44 (first time under 2:50) and a 4 minutes negative split. Joe was followed by Andrea Talpo (3:01) and then his wife, Alma Hanevy who also recorded a negative split of 4 minutes for a PB time of 3:05, a 4 minutes improvement. Next across the line came Marty James (3:15), shrugging off a recent injury, and Victor Fairbrother who may also have recorded a PB with his 3:24 finish. They were followed by Jane Wallace with a super time of 3:30, Mircea Ionita (another likely Dublin marathoner) with a PB time of 3:37 and Conor Parle (3:39) who improved his PB by 17 minutes. Carrying a long-term nagging injury, Mike Stewart crossed the line in 4:19, followed closely by Aisling O’Connor (4:22). Members will also be interested to know that Declan Ryan, a visually impaired runner from Thurles who trains with us, improved on his marathon qualifying time for the Tokyo Paralympics by 2 minutes from London earlier this year, finishing in 2:43:48. Declan ran on his own for the first half of the race and then was guided by Michael O’Conor for the 2nd half. Also, Lydia Bigley of the Dublin Front Runners, who trains with the club and has been working in Berlin, who was looking for a Boston qualifying time of around 3:37 gave her cause a huge boost with a 3:35:29 finish having run almost totally level splits and despite a significant amount of weaving that added to the length of the course for her. At least 4 of our club-mates took part in the inaugural Wheelworx Fastlane Half marathon on Sunday morning organised in the Grangecastle business park in Clondalkin with a two lap fast and flat course covering much of the same ground as the Race Series 10k held in July. This was an excellent opportunity for marathon runners in training who missed the previous week’s Race Series Half to get one under their belt before the taper. The race attracted a field of nearly 350 participants and was won by our own Italo Giancaterina with some ease in 1:12:28 as he came in ahead of the field by nearly 5 minutes. Italo was followed by Richard Phelan who may well have recorded a PB with his 1:25:49 for 10th place. Certainly, our next two runners did record PBs. Grainne Regan placed 64th overall and 4th woman home (just pipped in the last 200m for a podium place as 3 female runners finished within 20 seconds of each other for 2nd to 4th places) and Miriam Logan knocked 2 minutes off her previous best, taking 119th place overall, 11th female finisher, in 1:45:10. Also, on Sunday, Rathfarnham WSAF AC held the latest edition of its fast and furious 5k. Again, the course would have been wet, with a bit of a breeze, but the rain had largely disappeared by the time the gun went. Our large contingent was led home by Brian O’Kelly with 7 seconds PB improvement (over Armagh) of 14:39 for 6th place in a field of 837. Fearghal O’Hare was next in 35th place (16:15) and he was followed by Padraig Sheehan (56th in 16:49), John Fahy (80th in 17:17), just ahead of Paul Reidy (83rd in 17:18). The next runner to cross the line for the club was John McAuley (91st in 17:35), followed by marathoner in training Rory Goldsmith (104th with what may be a PB time of 17:47) and Michael Maughan (126th in 18:20). Tomas Bradley was next (130th in 18:26) and other top 150 places went to Ilona McElroy who is coming back to form (133rd and 17th in 18:30), Ollie McGrath (140th in 18:38) and Paul Flynn (144th in 18:44). They were followed by Zlatko Kulic (160th in 18:58), Tim O’Donnell (183rd in 19:45), Brendan Glynn (237th in 20:51), Gian Piero Allerta (254th in 21:05), Antonios Gkogkakis (274th in 21:17) and Eanna Farrell (279th in 21:39), another runner with a last minute decision to race and just coming back from injury. Our second female runner to cross the line was Maria Kennedy (290th and 65th in 21:49) who was followed by Emer Kenny (339th and 84th in 22:44), Donal Foley (346th in 22:58), Ciara Lehane (383rd and 100th in 24:13) in her first competitive outing since recently giving birth, just ahead of similar new mum, Darina Scully (397th and 109th in 24:25). Members will be interested to know that Lorraine Healy of Moyne, who trains with us, ran 19:54 for 193rd and 31st places. There was, understandably, a lower turnout than usual generally in the parkruns on Saturday morning, with Ireland in action against Japan in the rugby World Cup. Nevertheless, we did have a good number of participants and some first finishers. Fiona Bane ran in Deerpark Forest in Virginia Co. Cavan and placed 8th overall, first woman home, in 23:27, whilst Eddie Nugent finished first in Cabinteely in 19:59. Then, in Fairview, newcomer to the club, Esther Requena Ferri, placed 7th and first female finisher in 22:27. Next good placing was achieved by Sharon Woods who placed 25th overall and 2nd woman home in Poolbeg in a time of 23:56. A podium place also went to Brian Scanlan in River Valley where he finished in 3rd spot in 20:35, whilst Cormac McGuire had the same result in Tolka Valley in 22:30 and Darina Scully took 3rd place (22nd overall) in 24:41 in Father Collins Park. Just outside the podium, Aoife Kelly took 5th place (17th overall) in Russborough in a time of 30:48, whilst Anthony O’Reilly also took 5th place in Kilcock with a time of 20:25. Tara Murphy placed equally 5th in Poolbeg behind Sharon in 24:57 (34th overall). Elsewhere, Maureen McGinley placed 62nd and 18th in 28:40 in Bushy Park, whilst Orlaith de Burca came across the line in 60th place overall (20th female) in 28:25 in Shanganagh. Mairead Cashman ran 31:50 for 187th and 69th in Malahide and Paul Kelly placed 189th in 27:32 in St. Anne’s. Further afield, Andrej Kujikis ran once more in Edinburgh, where, in a field of 664 runners, he placed 36th in 19:54. Down in Tralee, Helena O’Keeffe (nee Walsh) took 100th spot overall (34th) in 29:09, whilst Maria Pertl ran 25:52 for 41st and 13th in Poppintree. Maria was accompanied by Diarmuid Byrne (no doubt with buggy) who came across the line immediately behind in 25:53 for 42nd place. Finally, we had 5 participants in Poolbeg, alongside Sharon and Tara, with 2 of them, Don Anderton and Michelle Geoghegan, tailwalking. Neil Brown placed 32nd in 24:43, whilst Ava Rose Clarke completed the course in 41st (9th) in 26:03. She was followed by Aisling O’Riordan who placed 56th overall (and 15th) in a time of 28:33.
