With the holiday season well underway, there have been fewer races in the past few days on which to report. Those that have taken place have, all the same, involved several of our clubmates with some excellent performances. Wednesday saw the return of BHAA action, a race sponsored by DCC and taking place in and around Irishtown Stadium and Ringsend Park. On a warm evening, the 5k event started and finished on the track and incorporated 3 full loops of the perimeter of Ringsend Park. As a 5k it was fast enough but was unlikely to produce PBs, given the number of twists and turns involved. Nevertheless, we witnessed some good times. The relatively modest field of 117 included at least 13 Crusaders, with 8 placing in the overall top 25 finishers. Michael O’Conor was our first clubmate across the line in 17:06 and he was followed by two runners only two seconds apart. Joe Walsh, who was the first M45 to finish, took 4th place overall in 17:25 and swiftly on his heels came Paul Cowhie who placed 6th in 17:27. Paul was also the first M55 home. John Mulvihill was next, in 7th place and a time of 17:35 and further back came Luke Davis (12th in 18:21). Luke was followed by Karl Walsh (17th in 18:25), Diarmuid Sheehan (21st in 18:58) and Tim O’Donnell (25th in 19:32). David Timoney, who placed 41st overall and 2nd M50, was next in 20:57 and David was followed by Sharon Woods (49th overall, 11th woman home and 1st F50 in 21:57) and by Robbie Moore (57th and 3rd M55 in 22:27), Paul E. Kelly (101st in 28:08) and Iseult Ni Chuinneagain (105th and 33rd in 28:34). On Sunday, one of the races in the Dublin Marathon Race Series, the Fingal 10k, took place. The 4-race series builds up from 5 mile, through 10k and is completed in August and September by, respectively, the Frank Duffy 10 miler and Race Series Half marathon, both in the Phoenix Park. The series is an excellent preparation for the Dublin Marathon in October and the 10k has now been restored to its original location and route in Swords after being held in Southwest Dublin for a time before the hiatus of the last two years. The race is generally fast and relatively flat except for a slight drag up one side of a dual carriageway for much of the first 5k. The field of 1,943 finishers was good in the context of racing in these times, but well down on previous years. In 2019 the race attracted a field of nearly 2,600. On a warm Sunday morning, of the contingent of at least 15 who competed, our first runner home, and following her recent podium place in the Tallaght 5 miler, the first race in the series, was a resurgent Yvonne Macauley who placed 78th overall and 7th female finisher in a super time of 37:53. Yvonne was followed by Eddie Nugent (86th in another excellent time of 38:03) and by newcomers to the club, John McDowell (157th in 39:53) and Robert Glascott (257th in 41:31). Dee Ni Chearbhaill was next (352nd and 42nd in 44:48) and Dee was followed by Emily Quinlan (381st and 49th in 44:55). The remaining runners included Kathryn Gibbons (396th and 55th in 45:14), Emily Glen (423rd and 61st in a 50s PB improved time of 46:09), Robbie Moore (557th in 48:16), Aitor Arribas Velasco (654th in 49:50), Gian Piero Allerta (741st in 50:18), Tim Purdy (814th in 51:11), Kevin Kenny (1082nd in 56:01), Fanny Trébouet, another newcomer (1,202nd and 291st in 58:01) and Lorraine Fitzsimons (1772nd and 610th in 71:48). Many of the runners are training for the Dublin Marathon and those that ran on Sunday were treated on the course to a good and welcome soaking from the local fire brigade, hopefully not needed in October! Up in the Irish mountains this week there were a couple of races with club participation. The first took place midweek, again on Djouce in Wicklow. This event took a route known as the Ayling Abyss, on the way back to Djouce Woods car park from the summit of the mountain. The Leinster League race, held in warm temperatures, involved a climb of over 600m over a distance of 10.6k on moderate and fully marked terrain. Warren Swords was our first runner home in the field of 121 finishers. He placed 4th in a time of 57:05 and probably being rewarded with the prize for first M40. Paul Flynn was next, in 19th place and a time of 62:07. Paul was followed by Ollie McGrath (40th in 68:57), Pat Quill (53rd in 72:56) and Kevin Lambe (81st in 83:09). Then, on Sunday, Warren took part in the Munster Championships on Carrauntohill in Co. Kerry. The race was described as extremely difficult, with a climb of 1100m and a little marked distance of 15k. Warren placed 7th in the race which had a field of 98 runners and he covered the distance in 1:51:06. Further afield, Jonathan Claridge ran an ultra in Iceland. The event was the 53.3k Laugavegur ultra marathon and Jonathan completed the race in 7:49. Meanwhile, in Ontario in Canada, our exile there, Ian Kinsella, won a half marathon trail event known as the 5 Peaks Albion Hills, completing the distance in 1:39:07 and leading home a field of 121. With a few notable exceptions, numbers of participants generally were down in the parkruns this weekend. This was possibly as a result of the holiday period but also could be a reflection of the warm weather conditions. First finishers included Karl Walsh who ran with 87 other participants in Naas. Karl’s time was 18:33. Mary Brennan (née Fitzsimons) was also a first finisher, this time in the 57-strong field in River Valley Park. Mary placed 7th overall in 24:22. Darina Scully and Kevin Flynn also ran in the event, with Darina placing 14th and 3rd in 26:10 and Kevin placed 34th in 33:52. Stephen Hurley led home again a field of 106 in Poolbeg. Stephen’s time was 17:56 and he was followed by Kenan Furlong (2nd in 17:58) and Maurice Kelter, placing 5th in 19:25 on his 30th birthday. Ruben Vega was first finisher in Marlay Park, where he crossed the line in 16:49, ahead of a field of 247. Stephen Mulligan and Fiona Lane also ran in the event, with Stephen taking 40th place in 22:15 and Fiona placing 180th and 44th in 29:22. Finally, Toby Benham treated Brickfields as a tempo run, coming home ahead of 42 runners in a time of 19:06. We also enjoyed some other podium finishes. Sharon Woods placed 9th and 2nd in 22:50 in Tymon Park. Louise Dobbyn ran in Cabinteely again, this time placing 16th and 2nd in a field of 79 in a time of 24:06. Louise was followed by Barry O’Neill (22nd in 25:25). In Darndale, John Lohan ran 23:15 for 2nd place, whilst Tara Murphy placed 6th and 3rd in 25:17 in a modest field of 11. Another podium placer was Fiona Shine. She and other members of her family ran in Clonakilty, where she placed 4th overall and 3rd female finisher in 22:16, whilst Lisa Shine placed 12th and 6th in 26:22 and Mairin Shine placed 21st and 11th in 29:29. The field measured 36. Michael Maughan joined 79 other runners in Father Collins Park where he placed 6th in 21:05, whilst Eanna Farrell ran in Bushy Park, where he took 29th spot in 24:45 in a field of 133. Eoghan Corrigan took on the 115-strong field in Fairview, where he finished in 21st place in 23:55, whilst Colm Foley ran in Griffeen Park, where, in a field of 116, he placed 35th in 23:12. Further afield, our Antipodean exile, Kris Ryan, ran in the Main Beach Parkrun in Queensland Australia where, in a field of 179, she placed 146th and 50th in 36:57, whilst Maureen McGinley ran in the 51-strong field of Mura di Lucca in Italy, where she placed 34th and 7th in 30:41. Lastly, Carina Davidson was our singleton runner in Shanganagh, where, in a field of 130, she placed 113th and 47th in 34:02. IMRA Djouce (The Ayling Abyss) trail race (121) Overall place Name Cat.
