Apart from the Ironman organisation taking over large swathes of Dublin and its environs on Sunday for the Dublin 70.3 (Half-Ironman) it was a relatively quiet weekend for road racing and also last week witnessed the final meet of the graded series in Drogheda, Dublin’s graded series having finished a week earlier. Perhaps, this is all to be expected in August, although next weekend will see the staging of the Frank Duffy 10 miler in the Phoenix Park, one of the Dublin Race series, which takes on a new importance in the calendar as those on the wait list for the recently closed Dublin marathon will be given priority if they participate in the series. The one road race that did include Cru participation at the weekend was the Indaver Duleek 10K on Sunday morning. Duleek AC in East Meath hosted the event that involved over 300 runners and the course consisted of one full 10K loop with right hand turns back to the start and finish on GAA grounds. Paul O’Meara and Laura Roche were our two intrepid participants, with Paul in process of tapering for the Longford marathon at the end of the month. He can take a lot of confidence from his 38:18 finish (21st place), with Laura also running well, placing 105th overall, 18th woman home, in 45:49. In the UK, Leo Lundy took on another incredible challenge over the last few days and he provided the following report of his most successful effort to date. The Cyclopark challenge is 4 events over 4 different trail courses over 4 days. Each day has a different theme. One goes as far as one can manage within the allotted time. Temperatures were hot at 24-27 degrees Celsius on each day. Courses are over loops from 3.28 miles to 13.1 miles. Around 100 ultra runners took part every day with 40 taking part in all 4 days of the challenge. Day 1 (Olympic Event) Leo managed 33.75 miles to place 2nd overall. Day 2 (F1 Event) he managed 31.5 miles, again for 2nd place overall. Day 3 (Darnley event (a really hilly 13.1 mile loop)) Leo managed 39.3 miles for 3rd place overall. Day 4 (Punk Run..and there were plenty dressed as punks!) he got to 29.52 miles for 4th place overall. His 134.07 miles over all 4 days was good enough for 1st place overall by a margin of 24 miles! Many congratulations to Leo. Last week saw the final meet of the season on the track in Drogheda, held in windy conditions (the story of the season!). In the mixed 3000m race Michael Kiely completed an excellent few months of track running, finishing in 2nd place in 9:21:35, whilst Ilona McElroy also ran well, placing 9th overall and first woman home in a time of 10:30:54. Alan Sheehy placed 10th in a time of 4:47:30 in the 4th heat of the 1500m, whilst in the mixed 2nd race Geraldine Clements placed 7th in 5:48:19, Darina Scully ran 5:55:18 to place 9th, Fiona Shine was 10th in 5:56:72 and Lisa Shine placed 12th in 6:03:84. Several of the athletes also ran some of the sprint events. Anna King ran in both the 100m and 400m events, finishing 4th in the former (the 4th race) in 13:85 and 3rd in the latter (mixed event) in 62:98. Darina Scully and Geraldine Clements participated in race 2 of the 100m, placing respectively 3rd and 4th in 15:83 and 15:86, whilst the Shine family featured in race 1. Fiona led her sibling and mother home in 1st place in 14:96, whilst Lisa was 2nd in 15:92 and Mairin, 5th in 20:21. We had at least three clubmates who took on the half Ironman on Sunday and again we saw excellent performances. Will Owens placed 74th overall in a great time of 4:41:01, having run a half marathon in a super time of 1:27:13, whilst Liam O’Brien came home in 732nd place in a PB time of 5:42:08 (including a half marathon of 1:51:50) and a 55 minutes improvement on his time last year. Additionally, Mike Stewart, who is also training for the Dublin marathon, placed 929th in 5:57:45 (including a 1:56:13 half marathon). The parkruns included several Cru runners on Saturday morning. Several of our atheltes from the Drogheda meet were out again. In Malahide Darina Scully ran 22:23 (possibly a PB) to place 43rd overall (4th woman) out of a field of 280 participants (which included a winning time of 15:31 by Daire Bermingham, one of the fastest times this year in Ireland), whilst Mairin, Fiona and Lisa Shine took on Cabinteely, placing respectively 56th, 65th and 75th overall (12th, 18th and 25th women finishers) in respective times of 27:37, 28:04 and 29:59. The field exceeded 100 runners. Ger White ran in Porterstown and placed 3rd out of nearly 60 runners in a time of 18:59, whilst Mairead Cashman participated in Vicarstown in a field of 43 runners, placing 23rd overall (6th woman) in a time of 27:34. Anthony O’Reilly returned to Marlay, coming home in 19:09, good enough to give him 15th place out of nearly 500 runners. Kate Murray continues to run in Lough Key and placed 14th overall (3rd woman) in 23:26 among a field of 138 participants. Finally, Niall O’Connell continues to make progress in recovering from recent injury with an 11th place finish in 20:17 in the relatively new parkrun outside Cork city in the Regional Park in Ballincollig (which replaced Tramore in June following complaints about congestion). The field measured 192 runners. Duleek 10K Overall Place Name Cat.
