Crusaders cash in at the BHAA Bank of Ireland XC

12/1/2020

It was a fairly busy weekend of racing, with the first BHAA XC race of 2020 (2nd of the season) taking place on a truly windy morning in Tymon Park, on a day when several parkruns were cancelled because of the fear of possible falling trees, and then, on Sunday, in much more benign conditions, we had a couple of runners in Gowran, Co. Kilkenny for the Leinster Intermediates and Masters XC championships.

We start with the Leinster Intermediates. Maura Mahoney was our only representative in the women’s 4k race with its modest field of 34. Maura’s 9th place in the race in 18:02, however, was good enough for her to be second scorer on the gold-winning Co. Dublin team. Hats off to her! Then, Michael Wycherley ran for the club in the Masters’ 6k event with its field of 120 runners, where he took a few decent scalps in placing 29th in 22:59.

On Saturday morning we had a substantial turnout of at least 19 in the mixed BHAA 6k race in Tymon Park, braving gale force winds. The course hasn’t really changed over the years, involving 4 laps on an anti-clockwise fairly open course looping around various playing fields and involving a bit of a steep descent halfway round. It was a bit muddy in places. Our star performer on the day was Niamh Allen who won the women’s race in 21:46, just over a minute ahead of Niamh Devlin in 2nd. Our Niamh placed 14th overall just behind John Mulvihill (13th in 21:32) and Joe McDermott (16th in 21:52). Michael Kiely also had an excellent race, placing 4th in 20:34 and was our first athlete to cross the finish line. He was followed by Paul Reidy, another runner enjoying a good spell of racing, who placed 11th in 21:15. In a field of 214 athletes, Michael O’Conor was our next runner home, not forcing the pace too much (19th in 22:14) and he was followed by Ciarain Kelly (26th in 22:27). Other male runners to follow were Peter Barry (36th in 23:07), Tim O'Donnell (76th in 25:16), Karl Walsh (103rd in 26:42), Robbie Moore (126th in 27:38), Brendan Glynn (132nd in 28:23), Michael McGovern (143rd in 28:43) and Paul F. Kelly (202nd in 35:28). Our female runners also acquitted themselves well, with Rachael Yorke placing 5th (80th overall) in 25:22, and Rachael was followed by Kathryn Sweeney in 9th place (104th overall in 26:42). Olwyn Dunne, in 28:40 for 141st place overall, 19th female finisher and 2nd in her age category, was next, followed by Susan Walsh (150th overall, 22nd female and also 2nd in her age category, in 28:59) and Maureen McGinley (196th overall, 34th woman and 4th in her age category, in 34:30).

On Friday night, Barry O’Neill took part in the Ballyhoura Moonlight half marathon, organised by IMRA. Official results are yet to be processed, but Barry ran 2:27 in Co. Limerick on a course that involved a 500 ascent overall.

On Saturday and Sunday, Donadea hosted the rather impressively-titled World Half Marathon Festival, which involved 2 races a day, in the morning and afternoon of each day. We had runners take part in the Saturday editions, each of which races requiring runners to complete 5 laps on forest trails. On Saturday morning, Eimear Deegan placed 181st overall, 71st female, in a field of 221 athletes and a time of 2:21:42. Then, on Saturday afternoon, in a smaller field of 107, Joanne Carey placed 46th overall, 11th female finisher, in 1:53:44.

Numbers for the parkruns were generally down on the previous weekend, influenced perhaps by the weather on Saturday morning. Brian Hyland joined the long list of Crusader athletes to come home ahead of the field in Poolbeg. Brian ran 18:05, whilst Caroline Crowley with her time of 19:28, was again a first finisher, this time in Poppintree, where she placed 2nd overall, having led the event outright until about 500m to go. Podium places went to Brian Scanlan once again in River Valley where he placed 2nd in 21:33, to Barry O’Mahony in Cabinteely, where he placed 3rd in 20:36 and to Esther Requena Ferri who placed 2nd (29th overall) in Poolbeg in 22:24. As usual, we had a large turnout in Poolbeg. Behind Brian, came Kenan Furlong (4th in 18:20), Cristian Vilchez Ceballos (5th in 18:43), Kieran Finucane (9th in 20:35), David O’Donnell (19th in 21:37), Russell Murphy (35th in 22:55), Ava Rose Clarke (87th and 16th in 25;21), Brian O’Kelly (100th in 26:01), pushing a buggy for the first time, Cliodhna O’Reilly (129th and 34th in 28:29), Mari Hansen (130th and 35th in 28:31), Gillian Curran (133rd and 36th in 28:40), Diarmuid Byrne (142nd in 29:06), Maria Pertl (143rd and 43rd in the same time), Tanja Narancic (152nd and 47th in 29:29) and Iseult Ni Chuinneagain (153rd and 48th in 29:31). Elsewhere, fair play to Barry O’Neill, the morning after his half marathon exploit, for turning out in Ballincollig where he placed 80th in 24:02, ahead of Helena O’Keeffe who ran 26;36 for 157th and 21st. In Bushy Park, Kate Murray took 74th and 11th in a time of 25:22, ahead of Mairead Cashman who ran 31:35 for 215th and 62nd. Further afield, Kris Ryan ran in Paradise Point in Queensland, Australia where, in a field of 339, she placed 41st and 8th in 23:26. Mairin Shine ran in Navan where she came home in 29:39 for 77th and 22nd, whilst Aisling O’Connor ran 32:56 for 460th and 137th in Marlay Park. Newcomer Eoghan Corrigan joined Caroline in Poppintree where he placed 14th in 21:47, whilst Orlaith de Burca ran with Janet McManus in Shanganagh. Janet placed 140th and 37th in 28:43, whilst Orlaith took 173rd and 542nd spots in 30:22. Kevin Flynn ran 36:05 for 152nd place in Porterstown, whilst, in Waterford Nature Park, the Kelly family, Paul and Aoife, ran respectively 22:29 and 28:17 for 11th and 38th places (and 14th female finisher).
