Crusaders excel in Cross Country and on sand. Men's Team silver in the Dublin Intermediates1/12/2019
There’s been a lot of action involving Crusaders on which to report over the past two weeks. Two of the main highlights were, firstly, Niamh Allen’s super 9th place in the National Senior Cross Country on 24 November and then this weekend’s men’s team silver in the Dublin Intermediate Cross Country championships in Tymon Park. We start with Niamh. On a waterlogged Abbotstown course and in a field of 78 runners for the 8k race, she worked her way steadily from about 19th place, eventually placing herself in 13th behind a small group of 4 runners on the last 1.5k lap, only to take all 4 of them in the end, an excellent finish and a really intelligent race (31:25). One of the benefits of the Cork native’s placing was second scorer for the gold-winning County Dublin team. Cork will be regretting not having claimed her for their own as it would likely have meant a podium place. As it was, the rebel county finished 4th. The individual podium featured two sisters for the first time, with Fionnuala McCormack winning by a country mile (28:41) and her sister Una Britton placing 3rd. Both will be members of a 6-strong team representing Ireland in the European Cross Country Championships later this month in Portugal. The men’s 10k race featured 3 Crusaders and it’s a reflection of the high quality of the 166-strong field that we had no runners inside the top 100. First across the line for the club was Vinnie McGuinness (110th in 39:07), behind race winner Liam Brady (32:50), followed by Italo Giancaterina (123rd in 40:12) and Michael Wycherley (140th in 41:30), none of them slouches! The week to follow was a memorable one for those who made the annual pilgrimage to Club La Santa, a sports complex near surfing beaches on the north coast of Lanzarote, for the International Running Challenge. This year saw the largest contingent from the club for the 31st edition of the challenge, which features 4 races of differing lengths and surface, run over a 4-day period. We witnessed some of the hotter conditions at times, which makes the event extremely challenging. Not all our 50 or so runners accepted the challenge of all 4 races, which this year, we were told, enjoyed the biggest field ever, but most ran in at least one of the events; in fact, we had 15 who took on all of the races, which meant that we were able to field 2 teams (up to 4 with 3 to score) for each gender. The resort where the challenge takes place is focused almost entirely for the week on ensuring that the runners have plenty of opportunities to recover well from the running, with loads of classes, such as yoga, Pilates and foam rolling and even this year introducing us to massaging after each of the races (which some of us were shown how to do, enough experience now to make us dangerous!). There are also opportunities to learn new sports like padel (a form of tennis), paddle-boarding and windsurfing, all taking place in sunny and warm conditions, although it must be said that Lanzarote is generally quite a windy island and this was noticeable in the races. So, we were up against other Irish clubs (notably Sportsworld, who fielded similar numbers to us), the Dublin Front Runners and Tullamore (with the famous Pauline Curley) and, this year, teams from Clonmel, Donore and Ballyskenach, along with a few individuals from the likes of GCH, Bohermeen and Dunshaughlin. From abroad there were teams from all over the UK, Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany, as well as individuals from France, Belgium, Spain and Switzerland. It’s a truly international event and this year was enjoyed by more than 500 athletes from about 20 years of age to 80, with 292 runners finishing all 4 races and involving 27 men’s and 13 women’s teams. The first event of the week took place on Sunday and involved a 10k race conducted almost entirely on road, but starting and finishing on the club’s 6 lane track. The course was essentially 3 x 3.4k laps of a loop around the windsurfing lagoon. As the first 3 races all started at 10 am, it was quite warm for the event, but there was a strong breeze to cool us down as we approached the seaward side of the lagoon. It was not too demanding from a topographical point of view, in that there were no real hills to contend with, but the heat and the wind did make the conditions challenging. There were 425 runners completing the first race, including a Dane with a stroller who broke into the top 50. In the women’s event, notable results were as follows: Ilona McElroy placed 5th (2nd in her age cat), followed by Adrienne Jordan (10th and 2nd), Catherine Thornton (13th and 4th), carrying a heavy head cold, Alma Hanevy (19th and 5th), Fiona Shine (20th and 5th in a PB time) and Caroline Crowley (21st and 6th in her age group). On the men’s side, Rob Cross placed 14th overall and 1st in his age category, followed by Paul Reidy (16th and 3rd), Joe McDermott (23rd and 4th) and Joe Walsh (34th and 6th). James Cottle also placed 1st in his age category in the race, despite not quite managing to pass the stroller at the finish. So, a quarter of the way through the challenge, the Crusaders men’s A team, with scorers Rob and the two Joes, were lying 6th and the B team, with scorers James, Tim O’Donnell and Philip Matthews, were lying 14th out of 27 teams in total, whilst the women’s A team with scorers Catherine, Irene and Alma were lying 3rd and the B team with scorers Fiona and Lisa Shine and Dee Ni Chearbhaill were lying 6th out of 13 teams in total. Onto the 13k Ridge Run the following day, which involves a start and finish on the track with the course changing from road to trail to road to trail from sea level to a volcano summit nearly 150m high, steep in places and quite treacherous on the volcanic rocks at the top. The descent was mostly on trail and this year there seemed to be an accumulation of soft sand in great swathes on the 6km of deeply rutted descent, which provided us with an interesting foretaste of the following day’s beach race. Nearly 400 athletes participated in this event and the notable results for the club were as follows: Shane Collins in his one and only race placed 7th overall, 2nd in his age category, followed by Rob who won his age category again and finished in 12th place. Next came Ger Forde who placed 16th (and 4th), Joe Walsh (21st and 5th), Joe McDermott (23rd and 6th) and James Murphy (28th and 7th), making a great return to competitive running (also, his first race in Lanzarote since 2012). James Cottle also had a super race, reeling in a few runners and winning his age category again. James was aided by our leading female runner, Catherine, whom he managed to keep up with until the last mile or so, when, spurred by words of encouragement from Sportsworld's coach, Emily Dowling, she took off for an extremely strong finish to place 11th in the women’s race (3rd in her age group). Alma placed 15th and 3rd, whist Irene came across the line in 19th (and also 3rd in her age group). In their first 13k, Fiona placed 23rd (and 5th), just ahead of Maura Mahony (24th and 6th). New ladies club captain, Rebecca Fleming, placed 7th in her age category whilst Olwyn Dunne was 5th in hers. Of note, the stroller, who possibly made his last appearance in the challenge, actually made it over the ridge too (child surprisingly aboard!). The teams were still lying pretty much in the same positions as the day before after the 2nd race. The following day saw us all being bussed over to Puerto del Carmen on the south side of the island. We were initially delighted that the beach had not suffered from any recent heavy rain, but unfortunately we realised soon enough that the sand was extremely soft at both the start and following the 1.25km turn along the back of the beach for some distance. Indeed, there was very little hard sand apart from at the water’s edge (which was on a steep camber and, therefore, provided a different challenge) and in short pieces towards the second turn of the 2.5km lap and finish line. Little respite for anyone and notably on the first lap Pauline Curley fell face first in the soft conditions, finishing the race pretty much covered all over in sand. Once again, in the men’s race, Rob placed 1st in his age cat and 16th overall in a total field of 374. Joe McDermott placed 29th overall (and 9th), whilst Joe Walsh took 30th spot (and 4th). Although James came home in 3rd place in his age cat, he was taking a theoretically comfortable 3 minutes lead over everyone else in to the following day’s last event, the 20k. Caroline had her best outing of the week in the 5k beach run, placing 9th in the women’s race (and 3rd), followed by Catherine who had another strong run, despite continuing to feel the misery of her heavy cold, placing 12th (and 5th). Alma took 18th place, followed closely by Irene (19th and 2nd). Grainne Regan took 22nd spot (and 6th), followed by Fiona who placed 7th in her age cat and Olwyn, 5th in her age group. Again, after 3 races, there was not much movement in the team positions. The last day involved a point-to-point 20k race back to the resort from a town a few miles away. The course wended its way along an undulating mix of trail and road with some quite steep descents in places. The wind was mostly at our backs, which meant for quite a warm race. So, once again, Rob won his age group, placing 9th overall in the 350-strong field, followed by Paul Reidy in his 2nd race of the week (12th and 3rd). Joe McDermott finished in 16th and 5th, followed by Joe Walsh (27th and also 5th). Philip Matthews placed 7th in his age category. In the O/60 category, unfortunately, James’ right hamstring popped after 9k descending round a tight corner and he was unable to hold onto his lead, finishing with a mix of jogging and walking some 25 minutes after his expected finish and the last Crusader across the line. The women’s race was an exciting affair. Adrienne placed 5th overall and won her age category for the race, whilst Catherine took 8th place and, by virtue of finishing 2nd to the overall winner of the event, also won her category. Ilona was next in 11th (5th in her age cat), followed by Caroline (18th and 5th), Irene (19th and 2nd), Grainne (23rd and 8th), Alma (24th and 4th). Fiona placed 6th in her age group, whilst Rebecca was 7th, Dee 6th and Olwyn 4th. After the smoke cleared for the 4-race challenge Rob was the clear winner overall of his O/45 age category, whilst Catherine, having overturned in the race a deficit exceeding 2 minutes on the athlete who was in 2nd place at the start of the day behind the eventual overall winner, won her O/30 category. They were our principal successes, followed by the women’s A team of Catherine, Alma and Irene who had consistently held onto 3rd place throughout the 4 days. The other women’s team placed 6th, whilst the two men’s teams were, respectively, 4th and 13th. Individually, there were also overall podium positions for Irene (2nd) and Alma (3rd). It was a super ending to a really fun event. Elsewhere, last weekend there were some excellent results abroad. Mark O’Connor who had to pull out of the Amsterdam marathon because of anaemia, was able to run in San Sebastien, turning in an epic PB performance of 2:54:04. Then, Pat Quill travelled to Australia to take part in a trail race measuring 100km in the mountains near Sidney. A late re-route due to fire risk disrupted Pat’s planning and he ran out of food towards the end. It was extremely hot during the daytime and then bitterly cold at night. However, despite such challenges, Pat plodded on and finished with about 2 hours to spare inside the time limit. Also, last weekend, Donnacha McCarthy won a plethora of trophies at an award ceremony in Dublin and was named Irish para-triathlete of the year. Hats off to him. Many congratulations, and well deserved. Onto this weekend and on Sunday we fielded two teams in the Dublin Intermediates. The women’s team was the minimum possible owing to some late pull-outs, but our 4 plucky athletes held their own. There were 55 athletes in the 5k race which was won by Rathfarnham’s Sinead Murray in 20:33. The Tymon Park course is familiar to us, next to the National Basketball Arena on the Tallaght side of the M50 and involves the use of a hilly main loop with a steep diversion down onto a playing field halfway round. The short muddy hill with its right-hand turn at the top which the runners take to emerge back onto the main loop is quite challenging, but it was noticeable that the athletes who took a tight line on it really benefitted in the overtaking stakes. The course itself was quite damp after the morning’s rain, but was also plainly suffering from weeks of soaking and was extremely strength-sapping. Maura Mahony led our intrepid runners home in an impressively steady 13th place (22:13), followed by Esther Requena Ferri, who really mastered conditions totally different from her native Spain. With an extremely strong finish after having accompanied Rebecca Fleming round for most of the race, Esther placed 36th (23:48) with Rebecca in 41st (24:04). Kate Murray was our 4th scorer in 44th place (24:26). The team placed 8th overall. The men’s 8k enjoyed an altogether bigger field overall, with 83 athletes competing. From early on, it was clear that our 11-man team was going to be in contention, with our American newcomer, David Willis (a 2:34 marathoner) establishing himself as someone to be watched. David never relinquished 4th place for much of the race (28:35, behind race winner Matthieu Proffit of Donore in 28:05) and behind him came Ciaran Diviney with a strong 9th place in 28:58. John Mulvihill made sure that he didn’t lose contact with Ciaran, also enjoying a great run for 11th (29:02). Our 4th scorer was Italo Giancaterina who started extremely steadily, working his way through the field for 16th place (29:37), just ahead of John McAuley (19th in 29:50). Peter O’Toole was next (26th in 30:17), finding the 2nd half a little tough. Full results are yet to appear, but the team was also supported by Joe McDermott (31st) suffering from a sore shin, an injury incurred playing soccer against Sportsworld in Club la Santa, Cristian Vilchez Ceballos (35th), Frank Hague (41st), Garret Dunne (45th), and Michael Maughan (61st). Donore won the gold medal on 36 points, with all 4 scorers in the top 15, whilst Crusaders took silver on 40 points, a good 16 points ahead of Raheny. Elsewhere, this weekend, we had runners in Belfast, Clonakilty and in Clontarf. In the last, there were two races on offer, a half marathon and a 5 mile race, both incorporating the beach for part of the course. We had 8 runners in the nearly 1500-strong field for the half, led home by Patrick Needham who found the conditions generally good in about 7 degrees Celsius. There was a stiff breeze into the runners’ faces on the way out, but its effect was cancelled out on the return. Patrick finished in 40th place in 1:27:40, followed by Dave Carter (53rd in 1:28:31), Adam Flanagan who paced the 1:30 runners (1:29:41 for 71st place), Luke Davis, one of those runners (73rd in 1:27:47), Anthony O’Reilly (140th in 1:36:16), Mauro Fioro Pla (183rd in 1:38:01), Phil Sykes (289th in 1:40:58) and Susie Keeling (604th and 87th woman, in 1:50:03). We also had some standout results in the 5-miler. Cristian Vilchez Ceballos placed 4th overall in 30:25. In the 687-strong field, Edel Haverty came home in 22nd place overall (3rd female) in 34:47, followed by Esther Requena Ferri (24th and 4th in 35:09), Brian Kelleher (28th in 33:02) and Louise Dobbyn (40th and 5th in 36:45). Meanwhile, in Clonakilty, Padraig Sheehan was our sole runner in the 10k there, finishing in 3rd place in 36:49 in a field of 724, whilst we had 2 runners in the 431-strong marathon. Noel Reilly placed 101st in 3:48:10, whilst Christophe Marsan ran 3:53:42 for 117th place. In Belfast, Yvonne Macauley ran in the highly prestigious Seely Cup 10k. In a field of 833, Yvonne placed 170th overall and 10th woman behind such notables as Ann-Marie McGlynn, Rachel Gibson, Glady Ganiel and Kelly Neely in a PB time of 37:25. We have two weeks of parkruns on which to report, although we will confine to just a few noteworthy ones. Last weekend, Amy McGuinness with 21:47 was a first finisher in Porterstown (10th overall), whilst so was Ronan Moynihan in Oranmore where he ran 19:14. Cristian Vilchez Ceballos placed first in Fairview in 19:46, whilst Esther Requena Ferri placed 3rd (and 12th) in 23:13. Anthony Owens came home in 11th in 23:12. Elsewhere, there was a podium for Josie Ward (19th and 2nd in 23:02) in Poolbeg. Remaining results for last weekend can be seen below. Those that aren’t listed include Aidan Hudner who ran 23:23 in Pollok in Glasgow for 36th place in a field of 268, whilst David O’Donnell ran in Cambridge, placing 55th in 21:58 in a field of 410. Kris Ryan ran in Paradise Point in Queensland, where she placed 44th and 8th in 23:49 in a field of 226. Finally, Orlaith de Burca ran in Wanaka, New Zealand, where she placed 45th and 22nd in a field of 62 in 30:10. This week, also in the interests of brevity, only the standout results are listed as follows: Kieran Little placed first in Shanganagh in 17:12, followed by Rob Browne who placed 2nd in 18:10. Michael Wycherley was also a first finisher in Poolbeg where he ran 17:59. Among the other 13 Crusaders who ran there on Saturday, Ava Rose Clarke placed 44th and 6th in 24:15, followed immediately by Sharon Woods (45th and 7th in 24:16). Ronan Moynihan took on Mallow Town where he placed 2nd in 19:00, whilst Kate Murray ran in Bushy Park where she placed 58th and 4th in 26:00. Finally, Brian McGuckin placed 6th in Brickfields in 20:44. The remaining results can be found below. Clonakilty marathon (431) Overall place Name Cat.
