![]() It was a relatively busy weekend of racing, with two excellent road races on which to report as well as those in the BHAA Garda XC. Our men also picked up a historic trophy in the process. We start with the cross-country that took place on a dry (at least for the duration of the events), but chilly, Saturday morning in the Phoenix Park, on relatively firm ground. Conditions were extremely windy, getting stronger throughout the morning, so that by the time the mixed 4 mile race took place it felt nearly gale-like. Having said that, for the most part the westerly wind was not overly unhelpful. The first race, the women’s 2 mile event, had a huge field, with numbers swelled as usual by the Lord Mayor’s 5 Alive initiative. With so many participants, the leaders on the second and last lap, which took in the hills on which Crusaders regularly train, found themselves having to negotiate a significant volume of back markers with a good 300m to go to the line. Thankfully, it didn’t affect the outcome of the race. It must be said, however, that some of the backmarkers might have had their race experience somewhat spoiled by the presence of a few elite male runners on a training session on part of the course, working their way through the women and demanding space as they went. It was slightly disrespectful of the event perhaps. We had 4 runners in the race with its field of 332. Sarah Lyons led our contingent home in a gutsy 12th place (14:49), followed by Olwyn Dunne (22nd in 16:03) with a spirited run and who also took 2nd place in her age category. Maureen McGinley was next in 62nd place in a time of 18:58, followed by Mairead Cashman (91st in 20:53). The second race was the mixed 4 miler with a field of 196 and again we saw some excellent performances from our athletes. The race was extremely exciting with a group of 5 athletes up front that stayed together right up until deep into the 4th and last lap when it split apart. Paul Reidy had been in 7th place for three quarters of the race but was able to come past the 6th placed solo runner on the last lap, in a time of 23:29, just over a minute behind the race winner. Michael Wycherley kept Paul in sight for most of the race and, despite being in pain from his foot with a slight drop in pace, held on for 9th in 23:55, also winning his age category. Frank Halligan and Joe McDermott were in a group that made a determined sprint for the line, with Frank holding on to 14th (24:15) and Joe placing 15th and given 24:19, but it seemed a lot closer than that! Joe Walsh enjoyed a steady outing, placing 28th in 25:27, followed by Karl Walsh (38th in 26:12). Next came Rachael Yorke, in first place among the modest women’s field. Rachael took some excellent male scalps on the eve of her birthday in placing 55th overall in 27:24. Pat Quill was next in 83rd place (28:52) followed by Robbie Moore who placed 99th in 29:57, Brendan Glynn (104th in 30:14), Tony Hackett (116th in 31:24) and Paul E. Kelly (154th in 36:54). As the last runner crossed the line, the heavens opened! Sunday saw two epic 10 mile races. The John Treacy Dungarvan 10 is well-known to local athletes as well as those from around the country, but in recent years Trim has also taken on a reputation as a decent challenge, despite its hills towards the end of the race. Since Dungarvan usually sells out so quickly (usually within hours), Trim provides a fun alternative. Trim’s event took place on Sunday morning and attracted a quality field in excess of 1,500 runners, among them 3 Crusaders. In similarly windy conditions, the women’s race was won by Ciara Durkan, who has recently graced our track on occasions, training on a Tuesday evening. Ciara’s time was 59:16. Adrienne Jordan, who is currently training for this month’s Seville marathon, took 6th place (82nd overall) and 3rd in her strong age category in 62:42. Adrienne was followed by newcomer Brian Keenan who is training for Boston in April. Brian ran 66:27 for 160th place and he was followed by Eimear Deegan who placed 613th (1,294th overall) in 102:01. The club fielded a much larger contingent in the iconic Dungarvan race, a largely flat and usually fast event, enjoying its 29th edition this year. Again, the strong winds may have compromised the chances for PBs but even so we saw course records from Mick Clohisey (48:16) and Aoife Cooke (54:23) and still there were some excellent times throughout the field. The race was won by Mick, in likely his last long distance event before the Seville marathon. He led home a field of nearly 1,200 runners. Once again, Crusaders men’s captain Michael Kiely showed his class, placing 13th in a super time of 53:13. Shane Collins also ran well for 17th place in 53:22, followed quite closely by Brendan Murphy who placed 21st in 53:50. The three lads’ combined times meant that Crusaders won the John Treacy Cup, pushing East Cork into 2nd place by the slimmest of margins, 6 seconds, and St. Finbarrs into 3rd place by about a minute. Hats off to them. Brendan was followed by John Mulvihill (33rd in 53:50) for a top 50 finish. Next came John McAuley (87th in 59:14), with Michael O’Conor finishing in the top 100 (98th in 59:26) under the hour. Continuing in the great form displayed last week, Eddie Nugent ran a super race, placing 141st in 61:43, followed by Dee Ni Chearbhaill who will be happy with her outing (491st overall and 37th female finisher in 70:40). Barry O’Neill completed the contingent (820th in 76:33). Members will be interested to read that Sean Murphy, who trains with the club, ran 60:12 for 115th place. We were back to winning ways in the parkruns on Saturday morning. Cristian Vilchez Ceballos took first place in Fairview in 18:48, whilst Esther Requena Ferri placed 2nd (13th overall) in 22:19 in the same event. Jim Stagg led the field home in Tymon in 18:44, followed by Sharon and young Karla Woods who placed 120th (and 36th) in 29:02 and 149th (and 50th) in 31.12. Elsewhere, Stephen Hurley placed 3rd in Poolbeg in 17:04, followed by Kenan Furlong (5th in 18:29), Niall O’Connell (19th in 20:16), Tim O’Donnell (22nd in 20:38), David O’Donnell (31st in 21:21), Aine Kenny, in training for this month’s Tokyo marathon (39th and 3rd in 21:54), Ava Rose Clarke (69th and 11th in 23;28), Ali May Hann (84th and 18th in 24:17), Tara Murphy 9122nd and 27th in 26:04), Gillian Curran (125th and 29th in 26:13), Cathal Murphy (151st in 27:35) and Tanja Narancic (168th and 53rd in 28:22). Further afield, Mari Hansen ran in Helsinki (Tokoinranta) where she placed 12th and 3rd in 26:50 in a field of 39 runners, whilst Orlaith de Burca ran in Oxford along with 515 other participants, placing 357th and 125th in 32:20. Kris Ryan continues to run in Queensland, Australia (Main Beach) where in a field of 315 she placed 188th and 64th in 32:39. In Malahide we had 3 runners: Ronan Moynihan placed 6th in 18:02, followed by Brian Scanlan (36th in 20:20) and Deirdre Kennedy (146th and 21st in 24:42). Anthony O’Reilly took 29th spot in Marlay Park in 20:38, followed by Eoghan Corrigan (46th in 21:37), whilst Kate Murray picked up 121st place and 7th in 24:49 in Bushy Park. Meanwhile, Marina White placed 79th and 26th in 28:30 in Porterstown, followed by Kevin Flynn (121st in 34:35). Liam Lyster took 11th spot in Strokestown in 25:56, whilst Mairead Cashman, in the first of two events for the morning, crossed the line in 65th and 23rd in 30:31 in Brickfields. In Tolka Valley, Paul F. Kelly ran 22:57 for 10th place, whilst Lisa Shine ran in Malow Town where she placed 47th and 19th in 31:57. Maria Kennedy was just off the podium in Kilkenny where she placed 37th and 4th in 23:26, whilst Aoife Kelly ran in Ardgillan, where she picked up 48th and 11th in 28:25. To round off the report, Barry O’Mahony crossed the line in 6th place in 20:22 in Cabinteely, whilst Janet McManus ran in Shanganagh where she placed 91st and 20th in 27:29.
