With most of us focused on the European XC Championships held on the purpose-built course, well-known to many of us, in Abbotstown on Sunday afternoon, it is no surprise that there was little other racing in Ireland over the weekend, apart from the Beehive Half marathon and 10k races, a mile challenge in Kilkenny on Friday night and the Ray D’Arcy's Laura Lynn Aware half marathon and 6k runs in the Phoenix Park on Saturday morning. Neither of the last two appeared to involve a Crusader. However, if this was not the case, please let us know. There was a modest field in the Beehive 10k on Saturday morning in Co. Wicklow. 35 runners were involved, including new member Geoffrey Keating who placed 18th in 52:26. Interestingly the women's race was won by Una Britton, Fionnuala McCormack's sister So, whilst all eyes this weekend were otherwise on the truly exciting events in Abbotstown (a super day for Ireland as well as for Norway!), in a well-organised championships with its plethora of European stars, both present and future, we actually have to turn to Italy for news of Crusader action. Our exile there, Italian native Italo Giancaterina, took part in the Italian marathon championships held in the town of Regio Nell Emilio near Parma in central Italy in chilly conditions. Italo ran extremely well to place 25th overall, 13th Italian across the line, in a great time of 2:33:11. Parkruns, therefore, provide the bulk of the news regarding club members this week. However, we should start by adding a result, missed from last week, in Bushy Park. In a field of 118, Aoife Quigley took 4th place overall and was first female finisher in a time of 20:55. Brian Leonard also took part in the event, where he placed 18th in 23:57. Brian also ran this weekend in Bushy Park, where he placed 23rd in 23:44, ahead of Kate Murray (34th and 6th in 24:37) and Ciaran Smyth (74th in 30:22). Elsewhere, Toby Benham finished runner-up overall in Brickfields in a time of 19:11, with Alma Hanevy, also running in the 61-strong field, taking 19th and 3rd in 23:44. Frank Hague joined 88 other runners in Porterstown where he crossed the line in 3rd position in 18:29, whilst Tomas Mahony took 9th spot in a field of 67 in Pobalscoil na Trionoide where he ran 21:11. In Malahide, with its field of 221 participants, Conor Greenan took 2nd place in 18:07, followed by Lean Ni Chiobhain (18th and 3rd in 20:23), Paul F. Kelly (33rd in 21:21), Brian Scanlan (43rd in 21:55) and Aoife Kelly (96th and 15th in 25:05), whilst David Carter crossed the line in 3rd place in Cabinteely in 20:08, followed by Barry O’Neill (27th in 25:03) in a field of 104. As usual, our biggest contingent headed to Poolbeg to join a field of 92. Stephen Hurley was our first runner to finish, in 5th place in a time of 19:19. He was followed by Tim O’Donnell (7th in 19:42), Daniel Sheridan (11th in 20:12), Kieran Finucane (26th in 21:34), Zlatko Kulic (29th in 22:36), David O’Donnell (31st in 22:53), Tanja Narancic (32nd and 3rd in 22:57), Russell Murphy (35th in 23:15), Josie Ward (44th and 5th in 24:05), Fiona Bane (46th and 6th in 24:21), Gillian Curran (52nd and 9th in 24:38), Maureen McGinley (70th and 18th in 27:38), Una McCullagh (80th and 26th in 29:48) with Don Anderton acting as tailwalker. Then, in Portrush, Hannah Jones ran again, this time in a field of 88, where she placed 60th and 16th in 33:13, whilst Mairead Cashman took on Waterstown along with 37 other participants where she placed 19th and 9th in 30:52. In Ballincollig, Lisa Shine ran 29:34, where, among 271 other runners, she crossed the line in 173rd and 48th places, whilst Mairin Shine ran in Tolka valley where, in a field of 32, she ran 29:39 for 24th and 9th places. Elsewhere, Kris Ryan ran in Paradise Point in Queensland, Australia, where, in a field of 248, she ran a time of 23:57 for 49th and 11th places. Finally, Colm Foley joined 107 other participants in Griffeen Park, where he ran 23:08 for 26th place, whilst, in Shanganagh, we had three runners. Stephen Mulligan placed 37th in 23:09, followed by Olwyn Dunne who ran 24:26 for 60th and 7th places and by Orlaith de Burca (126th and 43rd in 29:18). Beehive 10k (35) Overall place Name Cat.
