One would have been hard pressed to find much road racing around the country this weekend. There were a couple of events, particularly a 5k race up in Drogheda with a field in excess of 500 runners (many local). However, none of our athletes took part in it. Nevertheless, after some further research since the report was initially published, we have found another race on which to comment. This was the Newmarket 5k held down near Kanturk and Mallow in Co. Cork, in which we did have one runner, men's captain Ciaran Diviney. The race took place on a mildly undulating out and back course through the village and Ciaran ran with 424 other athletes. It was a quality field, with Ciaran placing 34th in a time of 16:19 and coming home as second M45. Congratulations to him. The race was won by Togher's Eimhin O'Broin in 14:06 and 25 athletes broke 16 minutes, including Michelle Finn (15:58) who won the women's race. Indeed, over 190 runners crossed the line in less than 20 minutes. So, this week’s report, potentially the penultimate one of a highly disjointed year, initially concentrated solely on delivering the results of this weekend’s parkruns, but has now been updated. There were, of course, some excellent runs produced by our members, among the nearly 20 different events in which we took part.
We start with Lough Key, in Co. Roscommon, where the run takes place in the Lough Key Forest Park. In a field of 133 runners, Luke Davis came out on top as first finisher in a time of 19:54. His feat was reproduced also by Tim O’Donnell who took part in the parkrun in Clonakilty down in his native Cork. Tim’s time was 20:03 and he led the field of 28 other runners home. Meanwhile, in Hartstown, Laura Flannelly (nee Shwirz) was the first female home (behind husband Brian) in 19th place overall in a time of 23:21 and ahead of Mairead Cashman (35th and 6th in 27:54) and 49 other runners. Frank Hague was runner up in Porterstown with its field of 92, his time being 18:05, with Kevin Flynn placing 74th in 33:05. Kate Murray also placed 2nd (22nd overall), in a time of 23:58, in Mullingar, which enjoyed a field of 88, whilst another runner up this week was Aoife Quigley who took part in the Cabinteely parkrun for the second time, where she placed 8th overall in a field of 107 and in a time of 21:14. Barry O’Neill was also a participant in Cabinteely where he crossed the line in 27th place and a time of 23:59. We had several tailwalkers this week: notably in Malahide (Darina Scully), St. Anne’s (Fiona Shine and Orlaith de Burca) and Poolbeg (Fiona Bane). In Poolbeg, as usual we had a large contingent of Crusaders, but this week it was topped by St. Anne’s where, in a field of 376, Lisa Shine was the first of our runners home (192nd and 40th in 26:34), followed by Emer Kenny (193rd and 41st in 26:35), Paul F. Kelly (216th in 27:03), Mairin Shine (278th and 86th in 29:28), Aoife Kelly (300th and 100th (how’s that for symmetry!) in 30:06) and Anna Shine (301st and 101st (likewise) in 30:08). Paul and Aoife were acting as pacers for 27 and 30 minutes respectively. In Poolbeg we saw Michael Wycherley take 5th spot in 19:03 as he works his way back from injury. In a field of 91 participants, Michael was followed by Josie Ward who crossed the line in third female place (29th overall, in a time of 22:30), Ali May Hann (35th and 6th in 23:20), Maureen McGinley (57th and 17th in 26:40), Gillian Curran (59th and 18th in 26:42) just behind, and Sharon Woods (66th and 24th in 27:10). Brian McGuckin took 5th spot in Brickfields with a time of 21:01. There were 45 participants in the event, whilst, in Bushy Park, with a field of 107, Andrej Kujikis returned (temporarily?) from Edinburgh to place 15th in a time of 22:10. Andrej was followed by Brian Leonard (44th in 26:04) and Eanna Farrell (67th in 28:59). Stephen Mulligan ran with 171 other runners in Shanganagh where he placed 44th in a time of 22:58, whilst Tomas Mahony continued his comeback from injury, placing 13th in 20:58 in a field of 88 in Pobalscoil Na Trionoide down in Co. Waterford. Killian Barry was our sole representative in the substantial field of 412 in Marlay Park where he placed 31st in a time of 19:33, whilst, in River Valley Park, Brian Scanlan ran 22:52 for 24th place in a field of 96 participants. As usual, we had one or two members running abroad. Kris Ryan, our Australian exile, continues to run in Queensland. In Paradise Point, with a field of 276, Kris placed 82nd and 10th this week in a time of 24:25. Meanwhile, Neil Brown is taking a winter break in Paris and decided to join the surprisingly relatively poorly attended run in the Bois de Boulogne. In a field of 44 runners, Neil acquitted himself well, running 21:30 for 10th place. If a race has been missed please let us know. In the meantime, happy Christmas to everyone! There are great expectations for members participating in events over the holidays too, which should keep the race reporter busy! Newmarket 5k (424) Overall place Name Cat.
