 Olwyn Dunne On a weekend that included the infamous Barkley marathons in Tennessee (with only 15 successful finishers since the annual event was created in 1986) as well as the fiendishly tough World Cross Country championships in Aarhus in Denmark (which made for great watching), it was much quieter than usual for the club with only two road races of note on which to report. Coincidentally, there was a swapping of race distance between the two, with one having previously been a 10k race becoming a 4 miler and the other moving from a 4 mile race to a 10k. The first was on Saturday in St. Anne’s Park in Raheny and it was the BHAA combined 4 mile event involving 435 runners, including a significant contingent from the Lord Mayor’s 5-Alive initiative. Last year, the event had been a 10k. On a mild and windless day, we had just 6 club members in the 2 lap race with a reasonable quality field. First home for Crusaders was Michael Wycherley who took 16th place and 1st in his M45 age category in a time of 23:43. Michael was followed by Karl Walsh (27th in 24:47) and Robbie Moore (65th in 27:49). Neil Brown was next, in 88th spot, running 29:28, and he was followed by Kate Murray (92nd overall, 3rd F45) in 29:59. The contingent was completed by Paul E. Kelly, who crossed the line in 213th place in a time of 37:09. On Sunday, we also had only 6 runners in the 50th running of an annual road race in Dunboyne. This year, the event was changed from its usual 4 mile distance to that of 10k and the course combined the old 4 mile route along with the 5 miler organised by the BHAA in the same location. It was fast and attracted 733 participants, hopeful of PBs on a calm and dry day, perfect conditions for running. Italo Giancaterina once more made his mark with a powerful run to finish in 15th place in a time of 33:21 and he was followed by Peter O’Toole who came home in 37th place in a time of 35:55. Peter was followed by Joe McDermott (40th in 36:05), an excellent result for Joe, particularly considering he is coming off an Achilles injury. Dee Ni Chearbhaill was next in 191st place overall, 23rd female finisher, in a super time of 44:00 and Dee was followed by Olwyn Dunne (258th overall, 39th female and 3rd in her F50 age category, in 45:55). For a second day running, Paul E. Kelly completed the contingent (686th in 59:09) and the 4 men in the squad took 8th place in the team competition. Members will be interested to learn that Dee’s husband Sean Murphy who trains with the club, placed 43rd in an excellent 36:19. At the World Masters Indoor Athletics Championships in Torun, Poland during the week, Bob Lyne was a member of the three man bronze winning team in the 10k walk. Many congratulations to him. Numbers were as usual generally high in Saturday’s parkruns, but possibly Crusader participation was a little lower than normal. We had a few podium placings. Alban Coghlan was first finisher in Marlay Park in a time of 16:15. In the same event we had one of our spring marathoners flexing his fast muscles before Paris. Rory Goldsmith ran 18:20 for 5th place, followed by Luke Davis, celebrating his birthday with a parkrun (6th in 18:24). Mary Noelle Rohan also ran, placing 489th overall, 161st female, in 32:43. Other podium finishers were Kenan Furlong in Poolbeg where he took 2nd place in 19:07 and Brian Scanlan who did likewise in River Valley in a time of 18:56. Kenan was joined in Poolbeg by Lisa Shine (42nd overall, 8th female, in 22:27), Paul F. Kelly (78th in 24:35), Ava Rose Clarke (94th and 26th in 25:25), Orlaith de Burca (111th and 34th in 26:17), Cliodhna O’Reilly (121st and 41st in 26:47), Aoife Kelly (123rd and 42nd in 26:57) and Iseult Ni Chuinneagain (148th and 56th in 29:14). Barry O’Mahony was our sole representative in Cabinteely where he placed 5th in 21:06, whilst Rob Browne, in preparation for the Rotterdam marathon next weekend, ran 19:45 to place 15th. Ronan Moynihan took 12th spot in 18:26 in Malahide, whilst Sharon Woods placed 35th overall, 4th woman, in 24:09 in Tymon Park. Olwyn Dunne warmed up for Dunboyne by running in Avondale Forest (32nd and 9th in 27:25), whilst Diarmuid Byrne swapped places this week with his partner Maria Pertl to run in Tolka valley. Diarmuid placed 5th in 22:38. Our two Scottish exiles also ran on Saturday morning. Andrej Kujikis ran 20:05 along with 648 other runners to place 43rd, whilst Aidan Hudner ran again in Glasgow where in a field of 414 he placed 113th in a time of 22:44. Gillian Lyons placed 61st and 10th in 25:27 in Father Collins Park, whilst Colm Foley took 29th spot in 24:43 in Corkagh. Finally, junior runner Colman O’Flynn ran 23:20 to place 23rd in Porterstown.
