We had so many Crusaders out competing this weekend, it is impossible to comment on all and the results below hopefully speak for themselves. There were two highlights of the weekend. The first was Adam McMullen’s new Crusader long jump record (indoors and outside) in a competition in Belfast where he jumped 7.97m. The jump was only 3cm off the Irish record and places him as the leading long jumper in the UK for 2018, 3rd in Europe and 6th in the World. The second highlight was the turnout of nearly 60 of us in the 34th running of the Raheny 5 miler, arguably one of the best 5 mile races in the country. This year more than 4,000 registered, with well over 3,500 finishers on the day. Conditions were dry and mild but a little blustery on a course in which the first mile had had to be altered from last year. Instead of a long drag along the Howth Road, we found ourselves on a short sharp hill going back towards the starting area, limiting the amount of time spent on the Howth Road. Despite misgivings before the start, with concern that the leading runners might potentially have had to work through a field yet to start, the arrangements worked out well and the course proved to be as fast as ever. The only time when the wind came into play was in the long run up the central alley in St. Anne’s Park where drafting was needed as we approached a turnaround to complete the last 2k. The Cru women ran well in a quality field, Adrienne Jordan leading the charge (196th overall, 17th woman, in 30:18) and 2nd F40. Kiera Roche was next in 199th overall (19th woman in 30:17), followed by Ilona McElroy (215th overall, 23rd woman, in 30:34). The three women were scorers on the senior team coming home in 3rd place (59 points) ahead of Sportsworld (64) and behind DSD (17) and Raheny (23). Catherine Thornton followed closely behind in a PB performance, knocking 25 seconds off her previous best with 30:41 (220th overall, 24th woman). Newcomer Alma Hanevy was next (329th overall, 34th woman, in 31:51) and Alma was followed by Niamh Aspell (469th overall, 55th woman, in 33:21). Top 100 places went also to Dee Ni Chearbhaill (484th overall, 57th woman, in 33:51), Rachael Yorke (492nd overall, 63rd woman, in 33:56), Katie McElroy (553rd overall, 77th woman, in a PB time of 34:31) just ahead of Emer Kenny (555th overall, 78th woman, also with a huge PB improvement of 34:31) and followed by Grainne Regan (588th overall, 83rd woman, in 34:54). The O/40 masters team placed 7th. Members will also be interested to know that Lorraine Healy, who trains with us, recorded her first ever 5 mile race, coming home in 442nd place overall, 50th female finisher, in 33:26. On the men’s side, we were all led home by recent Swedish arrival, Albin Ingmarsson (37th in 27:02). Albin was followed by Michael Wycherley with a super effort and a likely PB (48th in 27:36). Rob Cross was next (54th in 27:44), followed by newcomer, Kieran Little (59th in 27:46). Top 100th places were completed by Peter O’Toole (77th in 28:08), Bram D’Hoedt (78th in 28:12, and hopefully not suffering too much from the recurrence of an Achilles injury), and Frank Halligan, back from injury (90th in 28:21). Top 200 places went to Joe McDermott (104th in 28:30), Karl Walsh (146th in 29:19), who, like Dave Carter (173rd in 29:56) stormed through the field. In between came Daniel Lowe (152nd in 29:18) and the trio was followed by Michael Maughan (190th in 30:11). The O/40 masters team of Michael Wycherley, Rob Cross and Karl Walsh placed third, whilst our senior team took 5th. Among other notable performances were those of Joe Walsh (211th in 3:27), coming off injury, Eddie Nugent (226th in 30:44), James Cottle (244th in a PB time of 30:59 and, after reeling in his competition over the first 3 miles, 1st M60), Philip Hamilton who was next (305th in 31:35), followed by Brendan Glynn with a PB time of 32:38 (368th). There was also a PB for Neil Brown (556th in 34:32) and most likely for others too, it was that kind of a day! It was also good to see Philip Matthews back racing again after a long lay off. As usual we had fantastic support from the sidelines. Anyone who races knows what a difference it makes and is grateful for it. Since the beginning of the year several Crusaders have taken part in the indoor races on Thursday evenings in Abbotstown. On 11 January. 6 of our members took part in the 60m races on the evening. In race 1 Valentinos Goularas came home in 3rd (7.09), just ahead of Matt Behan (7:09). In race 2 Simon Everard placed 5th in 7.75 and in race 3 Alix Hughes took 4th spot in 8.21. Finally, John Caird won race 4 in 8.18, just ahead of John O’Loughlin in 2nd (8.30). Ronan Moynihan took on the 800m, winning race 4 in 2:24.48. Then in the 400m, race 2, Simon Everard won the race in 54.77, ahead of John O’Loughlin (4th in 58.90) and John Caird (5th in 60.78). In race 1 of the 200m, John O’Loughlin took 4th in 26.84, whilst Simon Everard came home in 2nd place in race 4 in a time of 24.86. Finally, Alix Hughes was the only competitor in the shot, putting it 9.68m. Last Thursday (25 January), we had a smaller turnout for the events. In race 4 of the 60m, Damien Murphy placed 4th in 8.50, whilst Mary Morgan also took 4th in race 2 of the 200m in 59.79. Finally, Denis Murphy placed 5th in the 2nd mile distance race in a time of 5:50.67. Leo Lundy remains on the pursuit of ultras. This weekend he ran along the banks of the river Stort on the borders of Essex and Hertfordshire. The race enjoyed good weather but conditions were mucky underfoot. Leo’s 29.5 miles was good enough for 4th place overall out of 121 finishers. There was quite a decent turnout for parkruns this weekend, spread across 14 events. The ever-steady Fiona Bane was a first finisher in Father Collins, placing 12th overall in a time of 23:57, the day before embarking on the Raheny 5 miler. Likewise Sarah Lyons is running well, and was a first finisher in Mullingar, taking 6th overall in 22:23. Another good result came from parkrun debutant James Murphy who placed 3rd in Poolbeg in a time of 18:32 as he works his way back to full fitness. He was joined by David Timoney (7th in 19:43), Zalan Kovacs (29th in 23:20), Brian Langton (46th in 24:59), Gillian Curran (58th overall, 13th female, in 25:30) and Mary Dolan (69th overall, 21st female, in 26:39). Likewise, Kate Murray placed 3rd (33rd overall) in Lough Key in a time of 23:53. Other good runs came from Ronan Moynihan (14th in 19:32) and Brian Scanlan (16th in 19:35) in Malahide, Donal Foley (10th in 22:12, in Porterstown), Colm Kernan(9th in 21:11) and Denis Murphy (10th in 21:31) in Killarney, Mike Stewart (16th in 21:44) in Shanganagh and Lisa Shine (107th overall, 12th woman, in 25:03) in Ballincollig.
