![]() The Dublin Athletics Board took advantage this week of availability of the new UCD track to hold the first graded outdoor meet of the season on Saturday afternoon, the first time such a meet has not taken place on a Wednesday. We had several runners take part in the track events on offer, from 100m, through 800m to 3000m. We had several of our younger athletes competing in the 100m races. In the A grade of the 100m, heat 2, Valentinos Goularas placed 3rd in 11.34, followed by Luke Timlin in 5th place with a time of 11.49. Charlie Bastow won the B graded event in a time of 11.75, whilst in the grade C race Cillian Doherty placed 4th in 12.53. The D grade competition had 2 heats and Liam Beaumont placed 3rd in the first of them in a time of 12.39. There was also a good turnout for the longer distance events. The women’s D graded 800m race was won by Sarah Lyons in 2:29.49 and she was followed home by two other Crusaders, Faye Kearney and Carmel Cooney, placing 2nd and 3rd in 2:31.24 and 2:35.54. There were 12 athletes in the race. Fearghal O’Hare ran in the grade A event, placing 4th in heat 1 in 1:54.45, whilst, in the grade C race, Oscar Sherry crossed the line in 3rd place in 2:03.35, followed by men’s captain, Aaron Cashman, in 5th place with a time of 2:05.14. We also had 3 male runners in the D graded heats. In heat 1, Henry Griffin placed 2nd in 2:08.66, whilst in heat 4, Sean Owens finished in 3rd spot in 2:23.64, followed home in 7th place by Paul E. Kelly in 3:16.90. The last events in which our club-mates featured were heats of the 3000m. In the combined grade A and B race both Colm Parnell and Kevin Fitzgibbon recorded PB results, with Colm placing 8th in 8:57.94 and Kevin, 11th in 9:20.90. Ciaran Diviney ran in the combined grade C and D race, where he placed 4th in 9:51.88. Well done to all who took part on the day. Road racing this week for the club began on Wednesday evening in the Ballycoolin Business Park in Blanchardstown for the BHAA BMS 5k. On a flat 2-lap course, there were 207 runners in the race. Our small contingent was led home by Karl Walsh who ran an excellent 18:18 for 19th spot and he was followed by a delighted Neil Brown in 42nd place with a PB time of 20:08, knocking on the door of a sub-20 finish. Neil was followed by Robbie Moore (77th in 21:55) just ahead of Tony Hackett who placed 80th in 21:57. Sunday saw a lot of activity on the roads around the island of Ireland. We had 3 runners in Belfast for the traditional bank holiday weekend marathon. On a humid and warm day, but with little wind, and on a hilly course, Peter O’Toole ran a super PB time of 2:57:06 (a 10-minute improvement) for 89th place overall in a field of 3,321 finishers. Peter was followed by Gerard White who also impressively broke 3 hours for his 136th spot in 2:59:54. Kevin Lambe was our third runner and he found the second half particularly challenging after early fast miles, eventually settling for a 3:54:46 finish in 1,190th place. Likewise, Limerick also held its marathon on Sunday, along with the half marathon and 6-miles events, all held in increasingly warm conditions. We had two runners at least in the marathon with its field of 877 finishers. Derek Lawlor placed 176th in running 3:28:01, whilst Tara Murphy ran 4:29:25 to place 692nd overall, 132nd female finisher and 6th in her F55 age category. The half was contested by a large field of nearly 4,300 and involved at least two more Crusaders. Robert Browne ran a splendid 1:18:19 for 15th spot, whilst Paul Reidy came home in 45th place in also an excellent time of 1:22:56. Finally, in the 6 miles (enjoying a field of more than 4,500 competitors), Orla Drumm was running competitively for the first time since 2018 and after becoming a mother of two children. However, Orla’s chip was defective, but she has been told she ran 38:54 for the distance, most likely placing 25th overall and 6th female finisher. Orla was followed home by Luke Haran who placed 84th in 42:54 and by Eugene McDonough who completed the distance in 60:27 for 2,300th place. Eugene was pacing his wife who is new to running and their time was impacted by the many walkers around them with whom they had to contend. The other road race that took place on Sunday was the Drogheda 10k, a race with a bit of elevation in the early stages but descending in the second half. On a one loop anti-clockwise course that went either side of the river Boyne, Conor Macguinness and Pat Duffy joined a field of 1,260 runners, with Conor taking 80th spot in 41:22, followed by Pat who placed 130th overall and 2nd M60 in 43:07. On Sunday too, but this time on the trails of the Kerry Way, Donatas Jocius, in training to represent Lithuania in the world mountain championships in June, won the 25k race, part of the Waterville Trail Festival series of races used by runners to help qualify for UTMB. The race, known as the WTF 25km, started and finished in Waterville, following challenging tracks, trails, beaches and roads with a loop touching Caherdaniel at its furthest point. There were two ascents of 236m on the course. There were several IMRA races on over the weekend and we had one runner in the latest leg of the Irish Ultra Championships set on Ballyhoura in Limerick. In a tough event, involving a climb of 1,850m and a distance of 60k, Becky Quinn won the women’s race by placing 4th overall in a field of 32 in a time of 6:25:35. Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, IMRA had organised its annual Prince William’s Seat 9.4k race in the Wicklow mountains. It involved two separate loops not far from Powerscourt on a new course of moderate difficulty and a climb of 405m. Four Crusaders took part in the race with a field of finishers 192-strong. Warren Swords was first to finish, in 7th place in a time of 44:22 and he was followed by Jason Kehoe competing in an IMRA race for the 100th time (12th in 45:58), and then by Alex Ainsworth (20th in 49:27). Further back came Gavan Doherty in 117th spot in 63:42. Given the bank holiday weekend, a lot of people would have been away and this was reflected in generally lower numbers in parkruns, locally at least. Nevertheless, we saw a reasonable level of participation and of course the usual smattering of podium finishes along with one first finisher. The first finisher was Fiona Shine who this weekend ran in Renton in Washington State in the USA. In a small field of 43, Fiona ran 23:15 for 6th place overall. Hannah Jones headed up to Narin Beach in Donegal where in a modest field of 22 she placed 8th and 2nd female finisher in 26:54, whilst, in Corkagh, the newly-wed Caroline Crowley placed 13th and 2nd in 21:44 in a field of 208. Husband Eoghan Corrigan took 9th spot in 21:22, whilst Mairead Cashman ran 30:04 for 107th and 39th spots. Paul Cowhie took 3rd place in Malahide with its field of 216, in a time of 17:13, followed by his wife Aoife who ran 24:40 for 71st and 8th, whilst Darina Scully took 18th and 3rd places in Gorey in a time of 23:57. The field there measured 95. Ross Neill placed 3rd in the 100-strong field in Sligo and in a time of 17:23, whilst Kenan Furlong also took 3rd place in Poolbeg in 18:14, ahead of a large contingent of Crusaders in the field of 151. Kenan was followed across the line by Daniel Sheridan (5th in 19:48), Kieran Finucane (20th in 21:42), Dale Whelehan (27th in 22:19), Josie Ward (37th and 4th in 23:11), Kevin Kenny (45th in 24:08), John McDowell (48th in 24:20), Rob Glascott (49th in 24:24), Lisa Shine (57th and 11th in 24:36), James Bradshaw (62nd in 24:52), John Lohan (67th in 25:02), Evelyn Neary (80th and 23rd in 26:05), paced by Michael Fitzsimons (81st in 26:06), Djinn von Noorden (116th and 40th in 28:51) and Mari Hansen (140th and 54th in 36:43). Paul F. Kelly paced the 25 minutes runners among the 472 athletes in St. Anne’s, finishing in 136th place in a time of 24:54, whilst Helena O’Keeffe ran in Tramore Valley, Cork, where, in a field of 168, she ran 26:37 for 76th and 20th places. Brian Scanlan ran once again in River Valley Park alongside 86 other runners, placing 29th in 27:19, whilst in Cabinteely, Emma O’Mahony took 61st and 13th in 28:41 and Stephen Mulligan placed 64th just behind in 28:45, in a field of 144. We had two runners too in Shanganagh this week. Tanja Narancic placed 62nd and 11th in 25:01, whilst Carina Davidson crossed the line in 125th and 38th spots in 30:43. The field measured 180. Furthe afield, Héctor Jiménez ran in Tooting Common in London where, in a field of 617, he placed 197th in 25:38. In Swansea Bay parkrun Toby Benham took 8th place in a field of 603 in a time of 17:35, whilst Georgina Hawkins ran in Clevedon Salthouse Fields alongside 305 other participants, where she placed 70th and 15th in 24:05. Finally, Orlaith de Burca joined 59 other runners in Mura di Lucca, where she placed 48th and 12th in 34:22. BHAA BMS Ireland 5k (207) Overall place Name Cat.
