Fencing forces Frank Duffy out to Swords

The Frank Duffy 10 mile race, one of the highlights of the road racing calendar and part of the Dublin Race Series, took place on a warm and humid Sunday morning in Swords. It was the first running there of a well-established race that incorporates the County Dublin 10 mile championships. Up to now the race has been run in the Phoenix Park and was moved to its new location because of the Pope’s visit last week and the fact that much of the paraphernalia around the middle of the park has yet to be dismantled. It remains to be seen whether the move is permanent or temporary and certainly the new course, although much flatter than the park, has its challenges in places. It is basically the old Fingal 10k course for the Race Series (since moved to Clondalkin) with an extra 4k loop added on, which included a few additional undulations. One runner described the course as increasing in climbs finished by a downhill to a slight uphill drag at the end. In any event, conditions were relatively hot for the event which started at 9:30 in the morning.

In a field of nearly 2,800 finishers we had at least 21 runners, several of whom are in autumn marathon training mode. It was a good test for them.

First male Crusader across the line was Paul Dempsey who is in training for New York and who has been flying this year. Paul placed 52nd in 1:00:54 and he was followed by Frank Hague who came home in 58th spot in 1:01:08. Seamus MacFloinn, in training for the DCM, was next in 89th in 1:02:40 and to round out the top 100, Peter O’Toole came home in that position in 1:03:38. Karl Walsh, who must have started relatively far back as usual, finished in 1:02:50 (104th) whilst Seamus Moore, in training for Berlin, did not particularly enjoy his outing, taking 124th place in 1:05:00. Seamus is carrying a bit of an Achilles injury right now, so it was a decent finish in the circumstances. Eddie Nugent was next (179th in 1:07:08), followed by newcomer Turlough Bolger (196th in 1:06:26) just sneaking into the top 200. Patrick Needham was our next finisher (255th in 1:10:11), followed by Brian Scanlan in his 2nd event of the weekend (288th in 1:11:06), Phelim Murray (384th in 1:13:25) still running off a hamstring injury, Micheal Killeen, who like Karl must have started far down the field (407th in 1:11:52), Barry McGuirk (409th in 1:13:52), Denis Murphy (588th in 1:16:33), Robbie Moore (654th in 1:17:45) and Colin Maguire (867th in 1:21:31).

Dee Ni Chearbhaill was our first woman home. It is likely that Dee has succeeded in picking up an age group medal (possibly gold) in the Dublin championships by running 1:13:21, placing 378th overall, 17th female and at 3rd in her age category (the first two spots appearing to be non-club runners).  Dee was followed by Aoife Quinn (587th overall, 54th female, in 1:16:32), Sarah Lyons (1,047th overall, 168th female, in 1:23:25), Jean Devlin (2,367th overall, 859th female, in 1:46:10) and Fiona Lane (2,626th overall, 1,046th female, in 1:58:23).

Once we get input on the Dublin championships the report will be updated.

There was a BHAA race on Saturday, in which Donatas Jocius took part. It was the Pfizer 5k. A modest field of 57 runners participated and Donatas took 6th place in an excellent 18:05. He then went on to run in a tiny LIDL 6k race on Sunday, beating his 8 other colleagues in a time of 21:57. Also, on Saturday, Carina Davidson took part in the Dingle Half marathon. Carina placed 362nd overall in a field of over 2,000 runners and 90th female home in a time of 1:51:59.

Further afield, Warren Sword took part in the Courmeyeur to Chamonix 101km race, which is part of the Ultra Trail de Mont Blanc (the famous UTMB). Starting out on Friday morning at 9 am, Warren covered the distance in 18:39:04, finishing at 3:41 am on Saturday (a chiptime of 18:39:04), placing 349th out of 1,622 runners and, as he said, celebrating his birthday in style.

One result we missed last week was that of one of our Australian exiles, Jerome Dupuy. Jerome ran in the Sydney half marathon last weekend running a time of 1:14:29. We also missed at least 3 results for Leo, who ran back-to back ultras during the previous week. His totals are climbing significantly!

Finally, we come to the parkruns and, as usual, we had plenty of runners appearing. In Marlay, in an event where the first finisher the previous week (who had not been highlighted) was Stephen O’Kennedy in 18:52, John McAuley ran extremely well to take 2nd in 18:22. He was followed by Kate Murray (51st overall, 4th female, in 21:44). Luke Davis placed 3rd in Lees Road in Ennis Co. Clare, in a time of 19:33. Kris Ryan took first place (3rd overall in 23:00) in a park run in Australia (Surfers Paradise with a field of 33), whilst Brian Scanlan was also a first finisher in River Valley (21:40).  Patrick Carthy took 2nd place in Mullingar in a time of 20:08, whilst Fiona Shine also appeared on the podium in Cabinteely (3rd female, 17th overall, in 22:15. Fiona was followed by Emma O’Mahony (74th overall, 16th female, in 27:21) and Mairin Shine (148th overall, 56th female, in 35:31). Tomas Dunne placed 5th in 20:50 in the same event. Fiona Bane came home in 5th (25th overall) in 23:19, whilst Darina Scully also placed 25th overall (8th female) in Killarney in a time of 27:13. We had as usual a large turnout in our home parkrun in Poolbeg. Kieran Finucane was 12th (19:54), followed by Zlatko Kulic (17th in 20:26), Paul Fox (30th in 21:24), Sharon Woods (54th overall, 6th female, in 24:14), Cliodhna O’Reilly (74th overall, 13th female, in 25;39), Jennifer Armstrong (112th overall, 27th female, in 29:46), Mari Hansen (114th overall, 28th female, in 30:01) and Ciara McElligott (124th overall, 36th female, in 31:31). Aoife Quinn mopped up the back markers in Fairview, whilst Colm Foley took 33rd place in Griffeen (24:02). Andrej Kujikis returned to his native new Zealand and ran in the Hagley parkrun there, placing 14th in 19:20 in a field of 212, whilst Aidan Hudner continued his running of Victoria Park in Glasgow with 354 others, placing 84th in 22:48. Maria Pertl and Diamruid Byrne took on Donabate this weekend, placing respectively 85th overall (21st female) and 86th in 31:12 and 31:13. Lastly, in Shanganagh, Janet McManus took 9th spot (60th overall) in a time of 26:10, followed by Orlaith de Burca (92nd overall, 27th female, in 28:49).
