It was a week of 5Ks as well as the national championships 5 miler road race. Even the IMRA mountain race came close to being a 5 mile competition.
We start with the Irish Runner 5 mile race, incorporating the national championships, which took place on a sunny and breezy Saturday morning in the Phoenix Park, on a challenging winding course that took in the north end of the park as well as a descent of the Furry Glen coming back up the steep hill onto the Upper Glen Road and finishing on Furze Road. There was, surprisingly perhaps, not a huge field at just under 1300 participants, but we fielded 13 athletes all the same, with some excellent results. Unexpectedly, Michael Kiely took 12th place in a PB time of 26:02, followed by Italo Giancaterina, whose excellent 19th place in 27:00 unfortunately did not count in the national championships, and the team placed 4th, whereas if his time had been included the team would have finished in bronze medal position. Italo was followed closely by John Mulvihill in 23rd and a great time of 27:09, with Rob Cross and Michael Wycherley in an interesting battle together further back. Michael had been passed by Rob on the Furry Glen hill in the later stages of the race and made a valiant attempt to catch him in the last few hundred metres. It was not to be but both came away with some spoils. On his birthday, Rob took 2nd M45 (47th in 28:49) with Michael on his shoulder in the bronze position in the same age category (48th in 28:50). James Cahill was next in 77th place in a PB time of 29:42, which again was surprising as James felt he had blown up somewhat after too fast a start. Adrienne Jordan was the next Crusader to cross the line (119th overall in 31:39) in her first race for a while. Unfortunately, although Adrienne finished in 7th place in the women’s race, like Italo she had not entered the national competition. If she had, she would have finished in silver medal position in her age category. Adrienne was followed by Damien Fitzgibbon (171st in 33:13) and by Maura Mahoney (287th overall, 41st woman, in 36:10), Jemma Lyons (289th and 43rd in 35:58) close behind. The next runner to cross the line was James Cahill’s sister, Susie Keeling, who recently joined the club and was running her first race in about 20 years. Susie finished in a highly respectable 39:00 for 529th place overall (and 123rd) and she was followed by Jean Devlin (639th and 169th in 42:42) and Siobhan Russell (694th and 188th in 43:40). Earlier in the week, on Wednesday evening, the BHAA held its annual visit to the same park for a trail run around the cricket pitches and a couple of club houses between the Khyber Pass and Chesterfield Avenue (on the site, as we later discovered, of an enormous Star Fort that was in existence in the early 1800s). The course has changed slightly over the years and it is less hilly (the trench that used to be crossed has now been bypassed). It was reported that the long wet grass on the course, following the day's rain, however, made it challenging, even though the evening was dry. Sean Doran enjoyed a dogfight with Eoin Callaghan to win by one second in 16:25, with Linda Byrne coming out in front in the women’s race (13th overall, in 18:10). In a smallish field of 142, our first club mate home was Karl Walsh (8th in 17:40 and first in his age category). Karl was followed by Joe Walsh (11th in 18:00 and 2nd in the same category). Ollie McGrath was our third runner home in 25th (19:38), followed closely by Alma Hanevy who podiumed once again (27th overall and 2nd woman across the line in 19:53). It was good to see that Enda Currid is back to competitive running following injury, placing 37th in 20:15 and Enda was followed by Robbie Moore (62nd in 21:58), Kate Murray (82nd and 19th and 2nd F45 in 23:24) and Emma O’Mahony (104th and 20th in 25:04). On the same evening, Dublin Athletics held the 4th graded meet of the season on the track in the Morton Stadium in Santry. We had a number of participants. In the men’s A1 race of the unusual distance of 2000m, Michael Mallin placed 6th in 7:44.17, whilst in the women’s 100m B1 race, Alix Hughes ran 13.23 for 5th place (Alix also took on the shot put where she placed 3rd with a throw of 9.69m). David Heavey took 4th in 11.31 and Sean Barry took 5th in 11.41 in the men’s 100m A1 standard, whilst Shane Keane ran 11.00 for 3rd in the A2 race of the same distance. Shane and David were again in action in the 40m A2 race, where Shane won in 50.81 and David placed 6th in 53.69. Ronan Moynihan took on the 400m distance again in the C1 race, where he placed 3rd in 60.23. In the women’s 1500m B1 event Fiona Shine placed 6th in 5:10.99, whilst we had 4 runners in the women’s C1 1500m. In a tactical race, Rebecca Fleming ran 5:36.12 to place 3rd, followed by Sarah Lyons (5th in 5:40.78), Grainne Regan (6th in 5:43.58) and Emer Kenny (9th in 5:53.45). The remaining track event in which we had Crusader participation was the men’s 1500m D1 race. Brendan Glynn finished in 4th place in 5:32.34, followed by Paul E. Kelly (6th in 6:57.60). Finally, Bernard Morgan threw the 5kg hammer 35.75m for 3rd place in this field event. On the same evening on a course of 8.25km, we had 6 Crusaders take part in the annual IMRA race on Scarr Mountain in Co. Wicklow, involving a challenging climb to the summit and back (an ascent of 383m). Warren Swords was our lead runner home in 9th place in a field of 173. Warren ran 41:33 and he was followed by Brian McGuckin (41st in 47:57), Anthony O’Reilly (47th in 48:13), Gavan Doherty (60th in 49:55), Pat Quill (85th in 53:14) and Berndt Heim (157th in 69:37). Back to road racing, and we had runners on Saturday and Sunday in at least two events. In the Arthurs Way 5k in Ardclough near the Lyons Estate in Co. Kildare, Paul and Aoife Kelly joined nearly 560 other runners. In his first victory of the weekend Peter Somba came home in 16:52, whilst Paul ran 21:42 for 36th place and Aoife, 23:57 for 65th overall (10th woman). Then, on Sunday, in slightly windy conditions again, the Dunboyne athlete won his 2nd race in as many days. This was the Castleknock 5k where he ran 15:09. Dee Lawlor was our first athlete home in a field of 928. Dee’s time was an excellent 17:20, gaining him 4th place and 1st in his age category. He was followed by Donal Foley who took 120th spot in 23:52. Leo Lundy reported that he ran 2 ultra-marathons in the UK during the week (3 including the one he ran last weekend). The first required a run of 11 laps around the Olympic rowing lake course within Eton College and the 2nd involved a midnight start for a 12 hour race at the Suffolk Trail Fest in Simpling in Suffolk. We had some good results in the parkruns on Saturday morning. Poolbeg was understandably our most successful, where both Kieran Little and Aine Kenny were first finishers, Kieran running 16:27 and Aine, 21:02 (20th overall). In the same event Stephen Hurley placed 2nd in 17:47. Ronan Moynihan was also a first finisher, placing 2nd to Anne Kealy, in a time of 18:22 in Malahide, with Brian Scanlan not too far behind in 3rd in 18:38. Meanwhile, in Fairview, both Adam Flanagan and Sarah Lyons placed 2nd in their respective fields. Adam ran 18:17, whilst Sarah ran 23:46 for 20th place overall. Rob Browne took on Shanganagh whre he crossed the line in 3rd spot in 18:40, followed by Mairead Cashman (110th overall and 36th in 30:48). Kate Murray ran 24:07 for 4th place (38th overall) in Bushy Park, whilst Maria Pertl placed 6th (17th overall) in 28:34 in Tolka Valley (followed immediately by Diarmuid Byrne who ran 28:35 for 18th). Emma O’Mahony ran 25:54 for 53rd (and 9th) in Cabinteely, whilst Colm Foley placed 55th in Griffeen Park in a time of 23:53. Kieran Martin got himself in shape for his pacing duties in next week’s Docklands 5k race in St. Anne’s where he ran 19:44 for 18th place, whilst Killian Barry ran 19:25 for 11th spot in Marlay Park. Further afield, Kris Ryan ran in Queensland in the Main Beach parkrun where in a field of 312 runners she placed 57th overall (and 10th) in 24:20.Closer to home, Aidan Hudner ran in Glasgow where he took 58th spot in a field of 343 and a time of 21:32. In Co. Limerick Luke Haran ran in Mungret where he ran 20:19 for 7th place. Finally, returning to Poolbeg, Kieran, Stephen and Aine were joined by Tim Francony who placed 6th in 19:26, followed by Simon Kenny (11th in 19:58), David O’Donnell (22nd in 21:38), Ava Rose Clarke (53rd and 8th in 24:35), Gillian Curran (71st and 14th in 25:49), Cliodhna O’Reilly (76th and 19th in 26:13), Mari Hansen (94th and 30th in 28:01), Maureen McGinley (103rd and 32nd in 29:03), Ciara McElligott (113th and 38th in 30:57) and Fiona Bane tailwalking.
