Fully Aware of Success Down Under

14/12/2023

Understandably, perhaps, there are few races on offer in the weeks leading into the festive period and we had a Crusader in only one local event that took place last weekend, the Aware Christmas 5k, conducted around Leopardstown Racecourse. Indeed, even the number of runners in parkruns during this time was much reduced. However, events in Australia seem to come thick and fast at this time, perhaps because of longer days in the southern hemisphere sun. Southern Spain also continues to provide significant competition, as we saw last week with Valencia and repeated in Malaga.

In the Aware 5k Carina Davidson was our lone runner, joining 186 other participants, placing 15th overall and 6th female finisher, recording a time of 22:58.

Down under, we had just two exiled members in the Port Stephens Marathon in New South Wales but they were both winners. In a field of 99 runners, Maurice Kelter recorded a guntime and course record of 2:54:52 to lead the field home and he was followed in second place overall, winner of the women’s race, by Niamh Allen, possibly running her first marathon, in a guntime of 3:01:46 and, like Maurice, continuing to record considerable success in 2023. The race was conducted along two largely flat out-and-back halves along the coastline road of Nelson Bay.

Closer to home, Charles-Edouard Cattier followed up his recent Dublin marathon success by running in the Malaga marathon where he recorded a time of 3:14:35.

Otherwise, we had several runners, but fewer than usual, participating in parkruns last Saturday, nevertheless, again with success.

Ella Quinn was one of our first finishers, also placing 3rd overall in a field of 104 in a time of 19:43. Ella was joined by Paul F. Kelly who placed 43rd in 26:21. Then, in Poolbeg, where we saw at least 20 Crusaders run, Saoirse McGrath led the women home in a time of 19:02, placing 5th overall in a field of 125. Saoirse was joined by Stephen Hurley who crossed the line in 2nd place overall in 18:11 and he was followed by Kenan Furlong (3rd in 18:15), Oisin Corish (7th in 19:22), Oisin Browne (14th in 22:15), John Lohan (16th in 22:22), Ross Neill (27th in 23:43), Josie Ward (36th and 3rd in 23:58), Andrea Talpo (35th in 24:25), Franky Keane (40th in 24:52), Tanja Narancic (41st and 7th in the same time), Olwyn Dunne (71st and 21st in 28:29), Evelyn Neary (75th and 25th in 28:40), Michael Fitzsimons (76th in the same time), Anna Hernick (80th and 29th in 29:35), Maureen McGinley (90th and 33rd in 30:37), Linda Walsh (94th and 37th in 31:20), Cynthia Perucca (109th and 49th in 34:28), Niamh Trihy (110th and 50th in 34:53) and Kevin Kenny (111th in 34:34).

Sarah Lyons appeared on the podium in Avondale Forest, placing 8th overall and 2nd female finisher in a time of 23:32. In the field of 57, Sarah was joined by Phelim Murray who placed 11th in 26:11. Darina Scully also placed 2nd female finisher in River Valley Park, where she also took 13th place in the field of 88 and in a time of 24:21. Janet McManus ran in Shanganagh where, alongside 141 other participants, she placed 53rd and 4th in 25:41, whilst Eoghan Corrigan finished in 8th spot in Waterstown. In a field of 68, Eoghan ran 22:34. Irene Gorman was our sole runner in the 346-strong St. Anne’s parkrun where she placed 221st and 67th in 29:58, whilst three members of the Shine family ran in the Sport Ireland Campus parkrun, where, in a field of 47, Lisa placed 24th and 11th in 31:55, Fiona placed 32nd and 15th in 34:47 and Máirín placed 33rd and 16th in the same time. Finally, Mairead Cashman took on Poppintree, where, in a field 156-strong, she placed 101st and 29th in 30:56.
