Most of the action over this weekend took place on the roads, or should one say, roads and beach. We had runners take part in the challenging, hilly, Achill half marathon, as well as the Clontarf half marathon and 5-mile races that take place on road and sand. There was also a great midweek double win for us in the mountains. We should start, however, by pointing out that we finally discovered the outcome of the Dublin women’s 10k championships that were incorporated into the women’s mini marathon taking place early in June. As we suspected, Olwyn Dunne was awarded silver F55, but we had the added pleasant surprise that Kathryn Sweeney, ladies’ captain Rebecca Fleming, Joanne Carey and Emily Quinlan had won senior team bronze. Many congrats to all 5 athletes. On Friday evening Luke Davis took part in the Leixlip 5 road race, an event that finished on the Le Chéile track. Luke placed 54th in 18:24 in a strong field, the race being won by Peter Somba who seems to have podiumed in all his races so far this year. The field was one of quality, with 97 athletes, nearly half the field of 199, finishing in under 20 minutes. Over in the west on Saturday morning, once again we had clubmates take part in the iconic Achill half marathon, a counter-clockwise race that starts with a long drag and contains a couple of tough climbs before finishing downhill. Thankfully, the rain held off and the westerly wind was relatively benign. We had some outstanding performances. In a field of 442 and a race won by Gary O’Hanlon in 1:17:05, and with Breege Connolly placing 5th overall in 1:21:08, Daragh O’Reilly put himself on the podium in 3rd place with a splendid 1:18:50. Joe McDermott wasn’t too far behind, running 1:22:23 for 6th spot and he was followed a little further back by Karl Walsh (26th in 1:31:41) and by Ronan Moynihan (29th in 1:33:00). Darran Lovely was a little further back in 32nd place (1:34:14) and he was followed by Robbie Moore (137th in 1:51:49) and Alan Kavanagh (140th in 1:52:14). The Clontarf 5-mile and half marathon returned this year in their usual spot. The races are different from the norm in that, although they are relatively flat, taking in the road along the coastline, a significant portion of each event, perhaps as much as half, is conducted on the beach at Dollymount Strand and also on the grass at the finish. If the wind is from the wrong direction it can make the races extremely challenging. This year, the relatively strong wind was from the west-south-west which would have had an impact on times for the return. Given all that, we had some surprisingly good results. The 5 mile race was won by Colm Parnell who ran 27:58 to lead home the field of 611, whilst young Alex Ainsworth acquitted himself really well, placing 4th in 29:22. Then, in the half, Kenan Furling was the first Crusader across the line, in 5th place in a field of 1,466 finishers. Kenan’s time was a super 1:21:58. Further back came Michael Judge (67th in 1:28:54), Alby Allan (76th in a PB rime of 1:29:30, his first time breaking 1:30), Áine Crotty (154th and 9th female finisher in 1:36:47), Ian Smith (270th in 1:41:50), Justin Keatinge (509th in 1:51:56), Frank Renehan (702nd in 1:54:49) and Fiachra O’Cionnaith (1,103rd in 2:09:05). On Sunday, Kate Murray took part in the Roscommon 10-mile race, part of the Kia Race Series. Kate placed 179th overall and 56th in a field of 413. Her time was 80:30. Abroad, we had a couple of exiles in action. Ian Kinsella in Canada won the Limberlost 42k Challenge in Ontario. He ran the scenic but really hilly trail race in 3:53:30. Pablo Sanchez ran in a 1500m track race in Spain where he recorded a time of 4:14 for the distance. On Wednesday evening IMRA staged its usual 10k race in the Leinster League on a circular route up to the summit of Scarr and down passing close to Lough Dan. It was held on difficult terrain and the field was limited to around 100. 93 runners took part and the field was led home by Warren Swords in 49:26. Becky Quinn also won the women’s race, placing 19th in 57:16. We had 3 other athletes in the event. John McAuley came home in 5th place in 52:32 and was awarded the prize for 1st M40. Paul Flynn crossed the line just behind Becky in 20th place in a time of 57:32, whilst Ollie McGrath took 25th spot in 59:27. He was also 2nd M45. With holidays and other races taking place, we didn’t have so many taking part in parkruns on Saturday morning. We had a few take part in events in the UK. Toby Benham ran in the Town Moor run in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where, in a field of 384, he placed 9th in 18:30, whilst Kevin Kenny ran on Anglesey where, in the Nant Y Pandy parkrun in Llangefni, he placed 37th in 29:47 in a field of 64. Also Ciarán Smyth ran with 99 other participants in Canterbury in Kent, where he placed 46th in 28:09. As usual, we had a smattering of first finishes. Daniel Lowe ran 17:14 to finish first in Tymon. In a field of 82, Michael O’Conor also took part where he placed 31st in 24:19. Meanwhile, in St. Anne’s Raheny, newcomer Chris Russell led the field of 223 home in a time of 17:19. Chris was followed by Peter O’Toole in 2nd place (17:23) and by Michael Maughan (25th in 21:36). Podium places were achieved by Robert Browne, Louise Dobbyn, Garret Dunne, Caroline Crowley, Enda Currid and Olwyn Dunne. Robert ran in Shanganagh where, in a field of 164, he placed 2nd in 17:43. Robert was followed by Carina Davidson (50th and 9th in 25:17), Ciara Bolger (53rd and 12th in 25:27), Jill Nason (65th and 15th in 26:02) and Orlaith de Burca (109th and 37th in 29:28). Louise ran in Cabinteely, where, in a field of 104, she placed 15th and 3rd in 23:29. Gian Piero Allerta also took part, where he placed 22nd in 24:08, whilst Barry O’Neill ran 24:46 for 26th spot. Garret headed down to Tramore and there he placed 2nd in 17:45 in a field of 78, whilst Enda also placed 2nd in the 57-strong field in Brickfields. Enda’s time was 21:02. Olwyn ran with Miriam Logan in Athlone, where Olwyn placed 18th and 3rd in 28:44, and Miriam was just behind in 19th and 4th places in 28:45. The field measured 30. Caroline ran with her partner Eoghan Corrigan in Corkagh Park, where Eoghan took 17th spot in 22:34, whilst Caroline placed 34th and 2nd in 24:27. The field measured 192. Darina Scully ran in River Valley Park, where she placed 16th and 6th in a field of 65 and a time of 26:36, whilst Mairead Cashman took on the parkrun in Glen River in Cork. Mairead’s time was 30:06, for 38th and 11th places alongside 61 other runners. Maria Pertl was our lone runner in Tolka Valley. In a field of 51, Maria placed 35th and 14th in 33:40. Finally, we had 17 clubmates take part in Poolbeg. In the 150-strong field, they were led home by Rob Glascott in a PB time of 19:31. Rob was followed across the line by Ger Moore (8th in 20:02), John Lohan (39th in 22:56), Luca Vicentini (43rd in 23:26), Emily Glen (46th and 8th in 23;36), Josie Ward (53rd and 11th in 23:48), Tanja Narancic (59th and 12th in 24:48), Paul Campbell (60th in 24:56), Stephen Mulligan (62nd in 25:13), Lisa Shine (63rd and 14th in 25:15), Fiona Shine (64th and 15th in the same time), Tara Murphy (66th and 16th in 25:22), Kate Healy (86th and 29th in 26:44), Aisling O’Riordan (89th and 30th in 27:08), Fiona Bane (108th and 36th in 28:47), Anna Shine (124th and 47th in 31:04) and Mairin Shine (125th and 48th in the same time).
