International Masters team medals in Madrid whilst the electricity flowed in Dunboyne and Clongowes

A few Crusaders headed over to Madrid last week to compete in the European Masters Indoors, which also included a 5k cross country race for each age category at the end of the competition. There were some excellent results for both the Irish team and for Crusaders with three of our club-mates bringing home a medal.

At the start of the week Ilona McElroy took part in the women’s W35 3,000m, placing 7th in a season’s best time of 10:47.01. Bob Lyne followed, taking 12th place in the M50 3,000m track walk in a time of 19:10.68. Considering that Bob has only recently taken up the discipline it was an excellent learning experience for him. On Friday Niamh Boland ran in the 2nd of two races for the W35 1,500m in which she came 7th in a time of 4:49.79 in what appeared to be a highly tactical race, and when the results were combined she was 7th overall. Then, on the last day, Simon Everard took the anchor leg in the M35 4x200m relay. The team took bronze behind Team GB and Spain in what might be an Irish indoor record for the category of 1:37.01. Finally, in the 5k XC, Niamh and her partner Karl Fahy were both scorers for the Irish team in their O/35 age category, bringing home the silver medal. Niamh placed 9th out of 25 finishers in 20:17 and was 3rd scorer of 3, whilst Ilona came agonisingly close to a team medal finishing in 10th individual spot and 4th team place in 20:32. The winner ran 18:55 on what was an extremely challenging course with a big hill and really windy conditions. Meanwhile, Karl was 2nd scorer of 3 in a time of 17:03, placing 12th out of 62 finishers. The winner ran 16:07. Congrats to all our intrepid masters!

What a difference a week makes. In benign conditions around the country several road races took place. We had runners in Dunboyne in the classic 4 miler there, as well as in Clongowes in Co. Kildare.

At least 4 Crusaders took part in the Eirgrid-sponsored 49th edition of the Dunboyne 4 mile race with Adrienne Jordan leading the charge, placing 68th overall (out of nearly 600 runners), 7th female finisher and 1st O/40 in a super time of 23:52. In a race which saw the return to our shores of the Kenyan Peter Somba, winning from Mick Clohisey, William Maunsell and Sean Hehir (who managed a 14:32 5k PB in the race), Tom Dunne took 131st place in 26:09, followed not too far behind by Denis Murphy (134th in 26:24) and the contingent was completed by Paul Kelly who came home in 506th spot in 38:29.

Dee Ni Chearbhaill had a lucrative day in the Clane AC-organised Clongowes 5k, joining nearly 260 other runners and placing 25th overall, 3rd female finisher and 1st in her age category in a time of 20:44. The course was, naturally, hillier than advertised! Of interest to members, Sean Murphy, Dee’s husband, who trains with the club, took part in Dunboyne placing 48th in 22:41.

Finally, onto the parkrun results. Not surprisingly, there was an increase in participation generally around the country. The improving weather has brought people out, although it has to be said that Olwyn Dunne was still able to find snow. Olwyn was running in the Tmiriyazevsky parkrun in Moscow, along with 67 other participants, placing 35th overall, 5th female, in a time of 26:39.

Closer to home, Brian Scanlan was first finisher in River Valley in 20:38, whilst Amy Brogan placed 21st overall, 2nd female finisher, in Waterstown, in a time of 26:49. In St Anne’s Matt Cranley, running this time without the buggy, placed 9th in 19:03, followed by Aoife Quinn (155th overall, 37th female) in 25:47. We had a good few in Poolbeg, with Kieran Finucane finishing in 18th spot (20:49), followed by Russell Murphy (32nd in 22:40), Colm Foley (35th in 23:02), Fiona Bane (45th overall, 5th female, in 23:50), Louise O’Riordan (73rd overall, 18th female, in 27:12) and Don Anderton (111th in 33:57). Natasha Murray was our lone participant in Brickfields, placing 67th overall, 37th female, in 48:27. Likewise, in Griffeen, Gillian Errity was on her own, taking 73rd spot overall, 8th female place, in 26:14. In Marlay, we had 4 runners: Anthony O’Reilly was first across the line in 24th place (20:19), followed closely by Killian Barry (25th in 20:21) and then by Kate Murray (92nd overall, 12th female, in 23:23) and Ailsa Berkeley (185th overall, 34th female, in 25:39). Janet McManus ran in Shanganagh, taking 41st place overall, 6th female, in 24:29, whilst Kevin Flynn was also a singleton in Porterstown, running 33:56 (92nd place). 3 Crusaders joined the field in Cabinteely, with Niamh Quinn leading our contingent home in 29th place overall, 7th woman, in 24:37. Niamh was followed by Fiona Shine (37th overall, 9th woman, in 25:04) and Lisa Shine (38th overall, 10th woman, in 25:06). Lastly, but by no means least, Leo Lundy grabbed the lanterne rouge to mop up backmarkers in Fairview.
