It was a relatively quiet weekend for road racing and cross country. The Leinster seniors took place in Co. Offaly, hosted by Ferbane AC, but we didn’t field any athletes, and then there would perhaps have been a few club members participating in the Remembrance Run, which is not chiptimed and no official results are published. Nevertheless, we did have a few runners, at least, actively competing and they produced some excellent results. Lisa Shine, ex women’s club captain who now spends more time down in Cork, took part in the 6th running of the hilly Eyeries 5 mile race in Castletownbere. The race was won by Alan O’Shea, breaking his own course record and Lisa finished in 47th place overall, but more importantly, in the toughest 5 miler she has ever run, she placed 7th female finisher and 2nd F35. Indeed, had she realised she might well have tried to win her age category only finding out at the awards ceremony that she was beaten for the victory by 2 seconds. She is hoping now to get her own back in races to come! In Co. Galway on Saturday, husband and wife, Joe Walsh and Alma Hanevy, took part in the Run for Mary 5k, a hilly charity event in Peterswell. Alma was 1st female home in 20:08, whilst Joe was 2nd overall in 18:03. The report will be updated if results are available. Our exile in Luxembourg, Richie MacLiam, who has been suffering form a motorbike injury for some time, may well be back on the road to recovery. Having recently run a 10 miler in some discomfort he donned his running shoes again in a road race this weekend, placing 28th in a 10k (the DeLux-Lauf 10k), on the German-Luxembourg border, in a great time of 39:01. Damien O’Brien, another of our exiles, who is now based in Chicago doing great things for Ireland with the IDA, also raced over the weekend. He competed in the Indianapolis marathon, which was being used by a lot of sub elite US athletes to get into the Olympic qualifying trials. So the course is mostly flat and fast with a small challenging hilly section between miles 15 and 18. Conditions weren’t exactly ideal though as there was a strong headwind towards the end and a temperature below zero. Still, using the Crusaders plan, Damien broke 3 hours for the first time, coming home in 2:58:05. Leo Lundy reports that he has now hung up his marathon boots for the time being after having completed his 300th marathon last week (the November Nightmare in Shropshire, England). He now wants to focus more on club races. Incidentally, for his feat Leo was awarded the Triple Crown by the 100 Marathon club, which has only been awarded 3 times previously (the last in 2015) and goes to those runners from Ireland who have completed 100 trail-, 100 road- and 100 ultra-marathons. The parkruns were well-attended this week, possibly because of the lack of racing available. It is likely that a lot of them were run in extremely soggy conditions, the ground in the Phoenix Park, for example, was extremely saturated, with streams of deep run-off crossing the Khyber Pass and mud and swampy conditions everywhere on the hills and on the Acres. First finisher results were earned by several of our club mates on Saturday morning. Ilona McElroy made a rare foray into the world of parkrunning, by placing 2nd overall, first finisher, in Castletown in Kildare in a time of 19:52, followed home by Orla Kennedy, another infrequent parkrunner, who placed 13th and 2nd in 22:02. There were other Crusaders in the event. However, they did not bring their barcodes with them. Esther Requena Ferri joined nearly a dozen other Crusaders in Poolbeg, where she placed 33rd overall, first finisher, in 21:38, whilst Niamh Corby ran in Cabinteely, taking 1st place (and 9th overall) in 21:30. Rob Browne ran 17:43 to place first in Shanganagh, whilst Brian Hyland performed the same feat in Knocknacarra in Co. Galway in 18:22. Podium places went to Diarmuid Byrne in Poppintree where he ran 18:40, whilst further afield in Australia, Kris Ryna placed 3rd (20th overall) in Mudgeeraba in Queensland in a field of 167 in 23:05. Neil Brown placed 2nd in 22:18 in a relatively modest field in Tyrrelstown, whilst TJ Bourke narrowly missed out on a podium spot by placing 4th in Poolbeg in 18:37. Cormac McGuire picked up 6th place in Tolka Valley with a time of 22:29, whilst Ronan Moynihan came across the line in 5th place in Malahide in a time of 18:07 and Brian Carroll took 10th spot in Griffeen Park in 19:39. Elsewhere, Andrej Kujikis ran one again in Edinburgh and placed 164th in a field of 575 in a time of 23:31, whilst Anthony Owens and Darina Scully ran in St. Anne’s. Tony crossed the line in 22:10 for 134th, whilst Darina placed 191st and 19th in 23:32. Once again, Mairead Cashman ran in Kilkenny, where she placed 129th and 32nd in 29:55, whilst Mairin Shine ran in Hartstown, placing 62nd and 16th in 29:10. Brian McGuckin continues to make great progress back to form and he ran in Brickfields where he took 12th place, coming home in 21:47. In Fairview, Paul F. Kelly placed 46th in 28:42. Finally, in Poolbeg, Esther and TJ were joined by Kenan Furlong who placed 7th in 18:47, David O’Donnell (23rd in 21:09), Thomas Martini (45th in 22:55), John Lohan (47th in 23:01), Olwyn Dunne (56th and 6th in 23:37), Ava Rose Clarke (80th and 17th in 25:12), Mari Hansen (84th and 20th in 25:25), Aoife Cowhie (92nd and 23rd in 26:07), Orlaith de Burca (158th and 58th in 31;26) and Tara Murphy, tailwalking.
