Late Summer road racing

26/8/2018

PictureDee Ni Chearbhaill

It was a much quieter weekend in terms of Cru involvement in road racing than of late, but the options were there all the same. On a weekend when training runs had to be re-organised because of the Papal visit, there were a decent number of races outside the capital on offer, but we had representatives in only a smattering of them, as many of us prepare for later races, particularly next weekend's Frank Duffy 10 miler.

The week's report effectively started on Thursday evening with the Portmarnock 5k, one of two races being run that day that also included a 5 mile event. Philip Matthews was our sole representative in a race that took in beach as well as road. In a field of nearly 200 runners, Philip placed 40th in a time of 22:33 as he works his way back towards full fitness. Over the weekend, we had two runners at least in the Tullamore Half marathon on Saturday. Enda Currid, a recent recruit who is in full marathon training, placed 58th in a field exceeding 800 and a time of 1:23:42 and he was followed home by Mary Dolan who took 506th spot overall, 122nd female finisher, in 1:56:46. On Sunday Dee Ni Chearbhaill and her husband Sean Murphy drove down to Wexford to take part in the Oylegate Half marathon, organised by Slaney Olympic. Dee had intended simply to run the race as a progression training run, but in the event, she went on to win it in a time of 1:40:43, placing 36th overall in a field of 118. For the record, Sean came home in 9th place in 1:20:35.

Further afield, Luke Haran ran in a race in Berlin of unusual distance, 10.5k, finishing in a time of 44:39.

Although, we did not have many races to report on, there was as usual a good showing in the parkruns. Podium places went to Kris Ryan in a parkrun in Mudgeeraba in Austrlai, where she placed 2nd (9th overall) in a field of 108 and in a time of 22:08. Meanwhile, Sarah Lyons was a first finisher in Westport. Coming home also in a time of 22:08 and placing 13th overall, Sarah was followed by Phelim Murray who took 14th spot just behind in 22:13. Alma Hanevy was another first finisher (8th overall) in Brickfields. Alma’s time was 21:53 and she followed Joe Walsh, the two of them in marathon training, who took 2nd place in 19:06. Matt Cranley recorded a father and daughter PB in Father Collins by placing 2nd with his buggy in 19:25, whilst Emma Flynn ran in Cabinteely and taking 3rd place (31st overall) in a time of 24:03. 7 of our members took part in St. Anne’s, led home by Peter O’Toole in 3rd place (17:19) and he was followed by Tim O’Donnell (22nd in 19:46), Kieran Finucane (33rd in 20:10), Aoife Quinn (137th overall, 18th woman home, in 23:52), Denis Murphy who like Aoife provided pacing support (139th in 23:55), Colm Kernan (211th in 25:41) and Darina Scully (229th overall, 47th woman, in 26:11). Gillian Errity ran in Ardgillan, taking 8th spot (42nd overall) in 26:18, whilst Jocelyn Dufetel came home in 14th place in Bere Island in a time of 25:20. Patrick Carthy crossed the finishing line in Mullingar in 4th place in a time of 20:06, whilst Lisa Shine ran Ballincollig and came home in 30:11 (205th overall, 60th female) and then in Shanganagh Joe Dunne took 19th spot in 21:39, followed by Orlaith de Burca in 74th place overall (13th female) in 26:51. Kevin Flynn mopped up the backmarkers in Porterstown coming home in 48:16 (127th). Lastly, our largest turnout was in Poolbeg where we fielded 10 runners. First home was John Thuillier in 4th place (19:06), followed by David O’Donnell (15th in 20:51), Fiona Bane (35th overall, 3rd female finisher, in 23:05), Zalan Kovacs (37th in 23:23), John McQuaid (45th in 24:02), Gillian Curran (72nd overall, 14th female, in 26:12), Mairead Cashman (102nd overall, 30th female, in 29:05), Don Anderton (122nd in 32:18), Ciara McElligott (127th overall, 47th female, in 34:10) and Mairin Shine (130th overall, 50th female, in 34:58).
