The Bob Heffernan 5k road race is a long-standing fixture in the racing calendar on a fast and flat course in Co. Meath and attracted a quality field last Tuesday. We had 3 runners taking part, led home by Stephen O’Kennedy, maintaining recent strong for. Stephen placed 44th out of a field of 519 in a time of 16:59 and he was followed by Brian Scanlan (119th in 18:45) and Denis Murphy (208 in 20:09).

On Wednesday there were two events, Dublin Athletics’ 3rd graded meet in Tallaght and an IMRA race. In Tallaght, John O’Loughlin placed 2nd in the 1st heat of the 400m C standard in 57.09, whilst in the men’s 800m D grade, Brendan Glynn came home in a PB time of 2:27.98 to place 9th, with Paul Kelly in 12th spot in a time of 3:27.86. Meanwhile on a race in Glasnamullen (involving also a clockwise lap of Djouce), 184 mountaineers were contesting a 10.2k race involving a climb of 410m on moderate terrain. Unsurprisingly, Becky Quinn was our first runner home in 1st place in the women’s race (28th overall) in a time of 53:47, behind overall winner Diarmaid Collins (46:05). Brian McGuckin was next over the line in 36th (55:58), followed by Ollie McGrath (49th in 57:57), Anthony O’Reilly (50th in 58:00) just behind, and Pat Quill (80th in 1:03:50).

We also had a good few runners in the Staff Relays in the Phoenix Park on Thursday, but unfortunately, individual results are not recorded in the corporate team event.

Over the weekend, on the track we saw various events taking place. In Belfast at an IMC meet on the Mary Peters track, Michael Kiely ran with 25 others in the 3,000m, coming home in 14th and a PB time of 8:48.43. In Oordegem in Belgium Matthew Behan joined other elite Irish athletes in search of European qualifying times and just missed out on a B standard time for the men’s 110mH with a time of 13.92. Finally, in the Irish Life Health games in Santry, Rhianna McCarthy and John O’Loughlin took on multiple events. Rhianna placed 7th in the 200m in 26.19, 6th in series 1 of the 100m in 12.65 and 4th in series 2 in 12.74. John placed 8th in heat 2 of the 200m in 25.56, 8th in series 1 heat 2 of the 100m in 12.67 and 4th in heat 2 of the 400m in 58.14.  Valentinos Goularas was the only entrant in the 110mH, running 15.10.

On Saturday, we had runners in both Calcutta Run races, the 5k and the unusual distance of 10.3k. In coming across the line in 8th place in the latter event, Kiera Roche secured 1st woman home in a time of 41:26. Kiera was followed by Brendan Glynn (26th in 44:08) and by Kenan Furlong (47th in 45:44), the masters runner making a welcome return to racing. The field measured nearly 350 runners. In the larger 5K event (580 runners), Luke Haran was the first Crusader home in 10th place in a time of 20:57. Luke was followed by Noel Reilly (18th in 21:59), Serena Moloney (25th overall, 5th female, in 22:35) and Kate Murray (37th overall, 6th female, in 23:31).

Paul Dempsey distinguished himself in the Garristown Windmill Run, leading all the way from gun to tape in the 10k event. Paul’s time was 37:50 and he was followed home by Darina Scully who placed 50th overall in the 312-strong field (9th woman) in a time of 48:45.

There were two distances covered over the weekend in the Malahide Castle-staged Run Dublin Run races. Zlatko Kulic was our only representative in the 210-strong 10K event, placing 9th in 40:13, whilst Geraldine Clements was another winner for the club in the 5k race. In a field of nearly 80 runners, Geraldine placed 7th overall and winning in a time of 25:08. Ciara McElligott also ran, recording 38:10 for her 58th place overall (30th female finisher).

On Sunday Gian Piero Allerta and Eoghan O’Gorman took on the Clogherhead Seaside 10k, with Gian Piero placing 34th in 42:58 and Eoghan 47th in 43:53. They ran with nearly 340 other participants.

Leo Lundy reported that he ran  30 miles in the Runners of the Lost Ark ultra event in the UK, taking place on the Thames towpath between Egham and Runnymede, in extremely warm conditions.

There was a good club showing in the various parkruns on Saturday morning. Tim O’Donnell was 1st finisher in Clonakilty in a time of 20:43, likewise Daniel Lowe in Lough Key in 18:48.  Meanwhile, Fiona Bane was 2nd (32nd overall) in Poolbeg in a time of 23:20. Fiona was joined by Kieran Finucane (4th in 19:25), Sharon Woods (37th overall, 4th woman, in 24:01), Gillian Curran (54th overall, 10th woman, in 26:21), Mari Hansen (69th overall, 18th woman, in 28:02) and Don Anderton who mopped up the walkers (98th in 55:17). Frank Hague ran well to place 3rd in Porterstown in a time of 17:30, whilst Andrej Kujikis also appeared on the podium taking 3rd in Cabinteely in 19:46. Matt Cranley pushed his buggy into 4th place (20:16) in Father Collins whilst Brian Carroll took 6th spot in 19:01 in Ballincollig. Aidan Hudner ran again in Glasgow, placing 81st in 22:15 in a field of nearly 340, whilst Brian Leonard placed 16th in Marlay in 19:31. Fiona lane placed 126th overall, 57th woman, in 31:10 in Shanganagh, whilst Mairead Cashman took 173rd place overall, 45th woman, in 28:27 in Malahide. Finally, we had two runners in St. Anne’s. Aoife Quinn placed 112th (14th woman) in 23:20, whilst Denis Murphy came home in 134th place in a time of 23:54.
