Several members of the club headed over to Galway on Saturday and experienced severely windy conditions in the Run Galway Bay half marathon, one of 3 races taking place in Salthill during the afternoon. Despite this, there was a PB and a podium place for one of our runners. It was also windy in the Phoenix Park for the annual Simon Community 5-miler, but, thankfully, the wind was not as strong as in the west. We also had runners braving a rail strike in the UK to compete in the London marathon on Sunday, finishing with distinction. As most will know, “teacht aniar” (coming from the west) is the Irish for resilience, and that, aptly, was needed in spades in the Galway Bay half marathon. Although, the course is largely flat, it requires one small loop and two large out-and-back ones, with half the race on the day heading along the Salthill Prom into the teeth of a 36kmh westerly wind. In a field of 857 finishers Kevin Kavanagh was our first runner home in a super time of 1:28:32 and 22nd place. Neither he nor Miriam Logan, who followed him, were able to draft in the field that was spread out at the pointy end, whilst Miriam, who found herself in no-man’s-land at times, was able to keep GCH runner Eimear O’Leary (who some of us will remember from her days with MSB competing with Caroline Crowley in the Dublin Novices XC a while back) in sight. Miriam is going from strength to strength as she prepares for the Dublin marathon at the end of the month and recorded yet another impressive PB improvement at a different distance. Her time of 1:32:14 helped her to achieve 2nd place in the women’s race, only 12 seconds behind Eimear, and 36th overall (with Eimear winning and placing 35th and the 3rd finisher placing 38th (only 8 seconds behind Miriam)). Next came Olwyn Dunne who placed 122nd overall, 11th female across the line and 1st F50 (an impressive feat given that Olwyn is usually running as an F55) in a satisfying time of 1:41:59. Olwyn was followed by husband Joe (185th in 1:47:23) and by James Moran (418th in 2:01:23). Elad Solomon took on the marathon event in Galway, where he ran a reseoctable 4:07:42 to place 154th out of 366 runners. Resilience also describes the experience of Cairain Kelly in the London marathon. Ciarain had to dig deep in the second half in conditions which were surprisingly dry, given the forecast, and increasingly warm with only a light breeze from the west. He managed an excellent time of 2:43:10, and was followed by fellow Crusader, Kevin Fitzgibbon, who ran metronomic splits for a creditable 2:58:35. He also had to work hard to keep up the pace in the last 10k too, but it paid off well. Leo Lundy also ran, coming home in 5:28:50. Closer to home, Paul Cowhie was probably our only runner in the Simon Community 5 miler that took place on Saturday morning on the roads in the Phoenix Park on a challenging hilly course, taking in an ascent of the Khyber Pass, and in windy conditions. Paul placed an admirable 6th in a time of 29:13 in a field measuring 615 runners. Earlier in the week, members of the Shine family took to the roads around Sandyford to take part in the largely flat Spirit Sandyford 5k, with one short loop and two large ones. Fiona (47th overall and 10th female finisher in 21:50), Lisa (84th and 18th in 23:47) and Mairin (198th and 59th in 29:09) were 3 members of the winning female team of 4. Also, Tim O’Donnell ran in the Cork BHAA Janssen 6k race over the weekend. In a field of 160, Tim managed a super time of 23:47 for 22nd spot. Georgina Hawkins headed to Wales where, on Sunday, she ran in the Cardiff half marathon recording a time of 1:53. Elsewhere in the world, Italo Giancaterina won a trail race in Canistro in central Italy. He covered the 10.7k race in 41:06. Our exile in Canada, Ian Kinsella, won an 18.5k trial race in Uxbridge, Ontario, in a time of 1:32:12, a good 7 minutes ahead of his rivals. Our Spanish exiles, Esther Requena Ferri and Cristian Vilchez Ceballos both won short distance races. Esther ran in a street mile event, recording 5:38, whilst before that both she and Cristian ran in a race of 4.75k, with Cristian finishing in a time of 15:59 and Esther, 18:10, for the wins. We had runners in 10 parkruns on Saturday morning, all in Ireland, and, among the runners, several first finishes and podium places. Orla Kennedy ran with Kate Murray (the latter, fresh from her Berlin marathon experience last week) in Bushy Park with its field of 129, with Orla finishing 9th overall in 22:12 and first female runner across the line, followed by Kate (33rd and 11th in 25:50). Ruben Vega led the field of 91 home in Fairview in a time of 18:04. He was followed by Anthony Owens (8th in 21:40). Daniel Lowe was first home in the 72-strong field in Brickfields with a time of 19:11, whilst Sarah Lyons was first woman home in Cabinteely Park. Sarah joined 102 other runners, among them Luke Davis, Dee Lawlor, Mairin Shine and Mairead Cashman. Luke placed 3rd in 19:12, followed by Dee 5th in 20:15), Sarah (8th and 1st in 21:36), Mairin (58th and 19th in 29:39) and Mairead (79th and 30th in 33:58). We had a strong turnout as usual in Poolbeg. David Wilis was putting his residual endurance from last week’s Berlin marathon to good use, coming home ahead of a field of 114 in a time of 17:10. David was followed by Stephen Hurley (2nd in 17:35), Kenan Furlong (4th in 18:34), John Lohan (14th in 20:58), Rachel Calvey (25th and 3rd in 22:50), Tanja Narancic (26th and 4th in 22:56), Josie Ward (29th and 5th in 23:29), Russell Murphy (35th in 24:04), Cliodhna O’Reilly (75th and 18th in 26:58), Tara Murphy (78th and 20th in 27:11), Catriona Egan (88th and 24th in 28:59) and Maureen McGinley, tailwalking. Cormac McGuire placed 4th in 23:46 alongside 24 other runners in Tolka Valley, whilst Tim Hyland placed 95th in the field of 327 in St. Anne’s with a time of 24:45. Lisa Shine ran in the parkrun on Wexford Racecourse, where, in a field of 57, she placed 33rd and 8th in a time of 29:20, whilst Brian Scanlan placed 8th in 23;48 and Darina Scully placed 15th and 4th in 25:57 in the 82-strong field in River Valley Park. Finally, Orlaith de Burca came home in a time of 28:41 for 113th and 35th places, and Carina Davidson crossed the line in a time of 35:02 for 154th and 63rd places in the 164-strong field in Shanganagh.
