More Christmas Running

There don't seem to be any photos of the most recent events available, so here's a picture of our club president, Will Owens, who is celebrating his 40th birthday today, appropriately enough on another Cru trip abroad. Happy birthday Will!

It would be wonderful to be able to report that everything else has passed smoothly over the Christmas break, but it is with deep sadness that we have to report that, unfortunately, an athlete from Raheny Shamrocks passed away after having been taken ill following completion of the Fat Turkey Run at the weekend. On behalf of Crusaders AC, our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Maeve Devlin at this time. May she rest in peace.
 
The race itself, organised by Suttonians RFC, is one of the more challenging 10Ks as it works its way on the trails up and over the Howth peninsula. We had at least 7 Crusaders take part, with Luke Davis finishing in 20th place in a field exceeding 460 finishers. Luke ran 41:33 and he was followed by Liam O’Brien (65th in 45:44). Having completed a marathon the day before, Olwyn Dunne was still able to put in a decent performance in the 10k, placing 134th overall in 49:51, just ahead of husband Joe who crossed the line in 51:07 for 169th place. Liz Nixon came home next (234th overall in 54:02) and she was followed by Carina Davidson (256th overall in 54:57) and Colin Maguire (272nd in 55:54).
 
The following day, Clonliffe Harriers held their annual 5k, the ERP Christmas Cracker, that is run on the fairly flat roads around Santy, but starts and finishes in the Morton stadium. We had only 2 participants this year, in a field of just over 250. Ollie McGrath, in his 2nd competitive 5k of the festive season, placed 42nd in 18:45, ahead of Joanne Carey who placed 133rd overall, 46th woman, in 24:44.
 
We had runners in at least 20 parkruns over the weekend, among fields of varying sizes. We also had a few first finishers again. Before her imminent departure for a few months sabbatical trip, Caroline Crowley is enjoying her parkrunning, and for the 3rd time in as many parkruns, she was a first finisher, this time on the slopes of Cabinteely, where she placed 5th overall in a time of 20:12. Mark O’Connor finished ahead of the field in Clarisford in a time of 19:39, whilst Anthony O’Reilly did likewise in Erris, Belmullet, Co. Mayo. Podium places went to Dee Ni Chearbhaill in New Ross where she placed 9th and 2nd in 21:38, to Michael Wycherley in Poolbeg where he also placed 2nd in 17:54, to Brian Scanlan (also 2nd in 19:08) in River Valley Park, to Ronan Moynihan in Mallow Town where he ran 19:20 for 2nd place (in a photo finish for 1st!), to Dee Lawlor, 3rd in Poolbeg in 17:57, to Peter O’Toole and Sarah Lyons in St. Anne’s, where Peter placed 3rd in 17:44 and Sarah, 52nd and 3rd in 21:59 and to Kris Ryan who ran Queensland’s Main Beach parkrun, where she placed 55th and 3rd in a time of 24:02 in a field of 387 runners.
 
Just of the podium came Brian McGuckin who placed 4th in Brickfields (20:38) and Sharon Woods, who likewise placed 4th in Tymon Park, placing 29th overall in a time of 24:05. Luke Haran came across the finish line in 5th place in Mungret in a time of 20:49. Andrej Kujikis returned to Edinburgh where among 600 runners he placed 230th in 25:16, whilst Maria Kennedy crossed the line in 10th (51st overall) in 24:21 in Kilkenny. We had 2 participants in Marlay, with John McAuley placing 119th in 24:27 and Darina Scully, 461st and 171st, tailwalking. Edwina Quinlan ran in Clonmel where she placed 41st and 15th in 29:47, whilst Colm Foley ran on Inch Beach, where he placed 10th in 24;26. Liam Lyster took 12th place in Strokestown, running 27:27, whilst Mairead Cashman finished in 76th place overall, 18th female, in 32:31 in Glen River. Brian O’Carroll and Louise O’Riordan ran in Ballincollig in Cork, where Brian placed 8th in 20:17 and Louise, 75th and 11th in 23:35. We had 3 runners in Porterstown. Paul Kelly led our small contingent home in 16th place in a time of 22:13, followed by wife Aoife, 89th and 29th in 29:36 and Kevin Flynn, tailwalking. Behind Caroline in Cabinteely came the Shine family. Anna was first across (91st and 24th in 29:18), followed by Lisa (92nd and 25th in 29:23) and then by Mairin (101st and 30th in 30:28).  Finally, behind Michael and Dee in Poolbeg we saw Russell Murphy (16th in 22:33), Donna Barry (52nd and 9th in 26:37), Maureen McGinley (60th and 11th in 27:23) and Don Anderton, tailwalking.
