The week kicked off on Tuesday evening with 2 events. The first took place just west of Firhouse and the event was an inaugural 6k race organised by the BHAA and held on a 3k loop on the paths of a hilly Kiltipper Park. Basically, runners had to run up and down a 40m hill twice. Thankfully, conditions were excellent, a balmy 16 degrees with little wind.
We had at least 4 athletes take part in the race, led home by Peter O’Toole in 2nd place with a super time of 20:38. By all accounts the race was relatively fast despite its challenges. Also, in the 85-strong field were John Healy (15th overall and 2nd M60 in 24:15), Karl Walsh (20th in 24:34) and Olwyn Dunne (54th overall, 10th woman across the line and 3rd F55 in 28:46). On the same evening, Alan Sheehy took part in his first 5k race in 4 years, placing 3rd in a field of 190 in 17:49. The event was the IP Telecom Dublin Nightrun Parkwest 5k and it was held on the other side of the M50 on a relatively flat but twisty course east of Clondalkin. Then, on Thursday evening, Tim O’Donnell headed to Carton House in Co. Kildare and ran in another 6k race, conducted around the golf courses there and organised by Dunboyne AC. In a race unsurprisingly won by Peter Somba in 19:43, Tim placed 30th out of a field of 250 in 24:20. The weekend also produced a few results. Although, finally, it seems the club was not able to contest the second round of the track and field league in Athlone on Sunday, we did have runners in a couple of events over the two days. Enda Currid joined 95 other runners to take part in the Inner City Running Half marathon, encompassing two laps of the north inner city largely between the city centre, Phibsborough and Beaumont. The second part of each lap was quite challenging with a climb of some 40m. Enda placed 24th in a time given of 1:48:48 (although his Strava result indicates a time of 1:39, based on elapsed time). Down in her native Kerry, Margaret Foley ran in the Banna 5k, where, in a field of 91 participants on a relatively flat course, she placed 20th and 4th in 22:13. Up in the mountains on Wednesday IMRA held a race in the Leinster League in Co. Wicklow around Ballinastoe. The distance was 10.5k and involved a climb of 504m on a fully marked but difficult course. It took place on a big loop on an otherwise out and back route. We had at least 4 members take part. They were led home by Warren Swords in 5th place in a field of 119. Warren’s time was 52:41, and he was followed by Paul McNamara (27th in 58:27), Léan Ni Chiobhain (38th and 3rd in 64:05) and Gavan Doherty (107th in 87:46). Then, on Saturday, Becky Quinn took part in the Glendalough 80k Tucker Trail run, in the Irish Ultra Championships, which by all accounts, she won. Results have yet to be posted and when they are the report will be updated. Further afield, one of our exiles in Italy, Clara Costadura, ran in the Italian Mountain Championships over the weekend. In a 9k race with a climb of more than 1000 metres, Clara placed 38th overall in an international field that was also part of a two day world cup double header. Then, in Caudete in Spain, our Spanish exile, Esther Requina Ferri took part in a road race that measured around 12.3k, finishing 5th woman in a time of 52:02. Possibly because so many from the club are now in training for the Dublin marathon (at last count the number exceeded 60), there were maybe fewer Crusaders taking part in the parkruns on Saturday morning. We had first finishers in a few, however. Josie Ward placed 34th and first finisher in Poolbeg in a time of 23:13. Josie was joined by Kenan Furlong who added the parkrun to an otherwise long run (19th in 22:03), David Timoney (20th in the same time), Neil Brown (68th in 28:00) and Don Anderton tailwalking. In Newcastle West, Emer Kenny placed 7th and first female finisher in 24:53, leading home Lisa Shine (10th and 3rd in 26:06), Anna Shine (26th and 13th in 32:52), Fiona Shine and Orlaith de Burca tailwalking. The field measured 42 participants. John Lohan was also technically a first male finisher, in placing 2nd in Strokestown with its field of 37. John’s time was 21:06 and he was followed by Tara Murphy (13th and 4th in 25:24). Podium places were recorded by several runners. On their mini-honeymoon, Phelim Murray and Sarah Lyons took part in the parkrun in Killarney House, where, in a field of 101 runners, Phelim placed 11th in 20:34 and Sarah finished in 15th and 3rd in 21:11. Karl Walsh and Sharon Woods ran with 78 other runners in Naas, where Karl placed 2nd in 19:22 and Sharon, 10th and 2nd in 21:53. In River Valley, Darina Scully took 13th and 2nd places in a time of 25:46 in a field of 58, whilst Brendan Glynn ran in Portumna with 39 other participants, placing 3rd in 23:18. Elsewhere, Peter O’Toole led a small contingent of Crusaders home in St. Anne’s where he placed 4th in 18:18, followed by Anthony Owens (30th in 20:49) and Michael Maughan (34th in 21:13). Mairin Shine ran with Stephen Mulligan in Cabinteely, with Stephen placing 13th in a field of 91, in a time of 23:50 and Mairin finishing in 47th and 14th in 30:23. Kevin Lambe took 5th place in Longford in 21:49. He was joined by 51 other runners, whilst Deirdre Kennedy ran in Malahide, where, in a field of 184, she placed 145th and 41st in 31:16. Finally, Aoife and Paul F. Kelly ran in the Waterford Nature Parkrun, where Aoife placed 20th and 4th in 27:34 and Paul finished in 21st place, one second further back.
