This weekend was full of contrasts, with a beautiful Saturday and, eventually, a sunny and quite warm Sunday afternoon. In the middle, however, the heavens opened! We witnessed a deluge on Sunday morning and those competing up in Dundalk in the Leinster XC Novices in the afternoon, following the storm, had to deal with the results of the heavy rain in spades! Such are the variables experienced from time to time in cross country. However, the contrast between the conditions we ran in in Abbotstown last week (or even the week before in Tymon for the Dublin Novices) and those of Bellurgan Park this weekend could not have been more stark. Thirteen plucky runners from the club headed north to Co. Louth for the races. There were 5 Crusaders in the 76-strong women’s field on a looped course and over a distance of 4k. The course consisted of one undulating lap of 1k followed by two of 2k, the maximum climb being about 12m. Because there had been several juvenile races before the adult events, the surface was a complete mud-bath, totally strength-sapping! The win went to St. Coca’s Aoife Ó’Cuill in 16:01, well ahead of the second-placed runner, Edel Gaffney from Trim (16:36). Making a welcome return to competitive running, Kim Hickey was the first Crusader to cross the finishing line, in 34th place and in a time of 19:15 and then the following scoring runners were not too far behind. Rachael Yorke placed 40th in 19:26, followed by Alma Hanevy (41st in 19:35) and Kathryn Gibbons (46th in 20:07). Sarah Lyons completed the team, placing 66th in 21:36. The team came home in 9th place. Next (and last on the day’s calendar) came the men, running on a 6k course (3 loops of 2k) that was by now well and truly churned up! We had 8 runners in the 117-strong race that was won by Vinny Connolly of Mullingar (21:51) getting the better of a team mate (Jack Moran in 22:00). Colm Parnell led our contingent home in 22nd place (23:46) and he was followed by Barry McCarthy (31st in 24:24), Felix Martinez (38th in 24:35), Patrick Conlon (52nd in 25:16), Ross Neill (53rd just behind in 25:17), Aaron Cashman (69th in 26:08), Joe McDermott (77th in 26:32) and Eddie Nugent (87th in 27:11). The team ultimately placed 6th. There were no medals this time for the club, but hats should be removed for the effort by both men and women! Sticking with cross country, our Spanish exiles, Esther Requena Ferri and Cristian Vilchez Ceballos took part in the Cross Popular Almansa in Spain, on a mixture of trail and track, over a distance just short of 7k, with Esther winning the women’s race in 27:06 and Cristian running 24:04. Also, whilst on the subject of cross country, we can confirm that Ciaran Diviney (M50) and Paul Cowhie (M55) have now been confirmed for their respective teams representing Ireland in the international 5-nations meet to take place in Santry on 12 November. Congratulations to them. James Cottle has also been confirmed as first reserve for the 4-man M65 team for the same event. There was only one road race that we have been made aware of that enjoyed Crusader participation over the weekend. On Sunday, Tim O’Donnell took part in a race in his native Cork. The event was the 10K Rebel Run (naturally!). In sunny conditions on a wet surface and on a hilly course, Tim ran 42:09, placing 50th in a field of 405. Finally, we come to the parkruns, whose numbers this week were swelled by those competing in the Dublin marathon next weekend, getting in a last-minute blowout before the event. It seems that many training plans suggest this opportunity. It wasn’t just Crusader marathoners who joined the regulars by taking to the parks on Saturday morning. Whilst we dominated in Poolbeg with at least 18 runners and had a good showing in St. Anne’s Park with 14, Blackrock AC, for example, were also turning out in strength in Cabinteely. We also had some first and podium finishers as usual. Stephen Hurley led the field of 164 home in Poolbeg, where he ran 18:02. He was followed by Daniel Sheridan (4th in 19:32), Paul Campbell (25th in 21:53), Alby Allan (26th and just behind in 21:54), David O’Donnell (29th in 22:07), Kevin Lambe (45th in 22:54), Josie Ward (46th and 6th, and on Kevin’s heels in 22:55), Paula Bradshaw (55th and 9th in 24:12), Emily Glen (61st and 12th in 24:29), John Lohan (70th in 25:01), Tara Murphy (72nd and 18th in 25:27), Kevin Kenny (78th in 25:58), Fiona Bane (82nd and 22nd in 26:17), Donna Barry (83rd and 23rd in 26:23), Catriona Egan (93rd and 26th in 27:10), Una McCullagh (104th and 28th in 27:37), Maureen McGinley (113th and 34th in 28:31) and Mari Hansen, tailwalking. Paul Cowhie celebrated being confirmed for the Irish team in the upcoming 5-Nations, by coming home ahead of the field of 290 in Malahide in a time of 17:40. His partner, Aoife Cowhie, also ran, placing 103rd and 15th in 24:50. Darina Scully was also a first finisher in River Valley Park where, in a field of 88, she placed 9th overall in a time of 23:56. Emiliano Sanchez took 2nd place in the same event in 20:54. Another first finisher was Lorraine Healy, our lone representative in Vicarstown. Lorraine joined 92 other runners in the event, placing 9th overall in 21:06, whilst, in Templemore, Miriam Logan ran 22:29 for 8th and 2nd in a field of 54. There was a bit of a problem with a scanner in St. Anne’s and at this stage we are missing a result for at least one of our runners, Sharon Woods. Once the results are completed, we will update the report. We can confirm, however, that there was a field of 366 and our contingent was led home by Thomas Vogée, running largely on his own for much of the event, in 4th place in a time of 18:07. Thomas was followed by Kieran Martin (12th in 19:11) and by Aoife Quigley (15th and 2nd in 19:16) who surged ahead in the second half and finishing not far off her PB, just ahead of Cian Coughlan (17th in 19:31) who attacked the last hill with gusto, and James Cottle (18th in 19:35). Phelim Murray was next (30th in 20:32), followed by Áine Crotty (37th and 3rd in 21:19). Margaret Foley followed (in 22:31 for 56th and 6th), and behind Mags came Olwyn Dunne (85th and 11th in 23;58), Dee Ni Chearbhaill (93rd and 13th in 24:07), Emer Kenny (103rd and 15th in 24:19), Sarah Lyons, taking it relatively handy before the following day’s XC (103rd and 15th in 24:19) and Liz Nixon (118th and 22nd in 25:05). Karl Walsh ran in Naas, where, alongside 112 other participants, he placed 3rd in 19:23. Michelle Geoghegan also ran, placing 80th and 17th in 30:30. Kathryn Sweeney ran in Omagh, where, in a field of 173, she placed 12th and 2nd in 20:07, whilst Stephen Mulligan ran in the 130-strong field in Cabinteely, where he recorded a time of 25:13 for 36th place. Paul F. Kelly and Hannah Jones ran in Fairview, with Paul placing 37th in 26:45 and Hannah placing 40th and 5th in 27:01. There were 117 runners in the parkrun. Lisa and Mairin Shine headed to Deerpark, Carlanstown, where, in a field of 38, Lisa took 32nd and 11th spots in 34:38 and Mairin finished in 33rd and 12th places in 36:05, whilst we had 3 runners in Bushy Park. Rob Glascott got lost on the twisting course that is the parkrun there, but still managed to place 13th in 21:32 in a field of 181. Our other two runners were Kevin Fitzgibbon (51st in 24:55) who ran side by side with Toby Benham (52nd in 24:55). Mairead Cashman was our singleton runner in Tymon Park where alongside 112 other participants, she took 53rd and 13th spots in 28:29, whilst Kate Murray joined 377 other runners in Marlay Park where she placed 130th and 20th in 25:10. Finally, Dee Lawlor and Orlaith de Burca ran in Shanganagh in a field of 186. Dee placed 6th in 19:21, whilst Orlaith finished in 110th and 31st in 28:45. Rebel Run Cork (405) Overall place Name Cat.
