The week was marked by a return, after a 2-year hiatus, of the club’s fund-raising race, the Docklands 5k, this year sponsored by Waystone. Thankfully, we were blessed with good weather, although the warm conditions may have made the race tough for some. We had nearly 1,400 runners sign up this year, down from the 2,000 in 2019, but still remarkable given that several companies in the area continue to have their employees work from home. The corporate team competition is an important element of the race and those that did participate enjoyed great team-bonding. The race is on what must be considered the flattest course in Dublin, following the quays on an out-back route. It is challenging for the organisers to ensure that the lead runners don’t tangle with those still in their first kilometre and the stewards and club pacers did a super job in ensuring that the field left the start line, significantly narrowed this year because of construction, within two and half minutes following the hooter to start the race. The most pleasing aspect for those involved in organising the race was the wave of smiles that was presented by the runners as they crossed the finish line. Undoubtedly, there were PBs in the race, and the pacers involved in the club’s couch-to-5k programme can pat themselves on the back at a successful conclusion too. The icing on the cake was the after-race party thrown by Capital Dock and attended by a significant percentage of the nearly 1,100 who ultimately ran the race. More of the race later, as we start the details of the report with the National senior track and field championships held over the weekend at Santry stadium. The weather enjoyed over the past week was not to continue, and, as might be expected, we did tend to see four seasons in a day over each of the two days of competition, not ideal for athletes. Our medal haul may have been somewhat reduced this year (and we had no one contesting the men’s or women’s 400m or 800m events, or any of the field events), but still we had a decent presence in several races. The standout performances occurred on the first day, with Matt Behan returning to contest the 110m final and getting the better of his rival, Gerard O’Donnell, to take the win. Matt ran 15.61, with O’Donnell just behind in 15.63 and Valantinos Goularas, agonisingly close to a bronze, placing 4th in 16.88. Matt and Valantinos then went on to take part, alongside Hugo Magee and Shane Keane, in the men’s 4x100m relay, where the team picked up the silver medal. Following a shaky handover on the last exchange by the west Dublin club, Tallaght crossed the line in 42.22 against our 42.55. The result stood, given that the baton was still in the changeover zone despite the receiving athlete being outside it. So, our haul for the meet was one gold and one silver. On the first day we had several athletes in the heats of the 200m, and, although Conall Gallagher won his heat (the first of the day) in 22.67, and so did Hugo Magee his, in the 5th, in a time of 23.00, only Conal qualified as a fastest “other”, since the line-up for the final was based on times rather than positions. So, in their respective heats, Aaron Vodopi ran 25.79, Shane Keane ran 23.69 and Robert Ivers ran 24.56. In the final Conall placed 8th in a time of 23.88. It has to be said that the strong headwind in the home straight was a challenge for athletes for most of the weekend. Other athletes contesting heats but not progressing were Roisin Dobey who ran 26.86, placing 5th in her 200m heat, Sinead Moloney who ran in heat one of the 400mH, placing 4th in 1:08.87, Enda Clarke, who ran for much of his 1500m heat in no man’s land, always tough but a good learning experience, and finishing in 4:29.44, whilst Charlotte Myers so nearly made it into the final of her 1500m heat, placing 8th in 4:40.17. Charlotte reported that there was quite a bit of acrimonious bumping and barging in the thick of her race, not so obvious to those of us watching! On the second day we had runners in the 100m heats, unfortunately, none of whom progressing. Robert Ivers ran 11.88 for 5th place in his heat, with Aaron Vodopi placing 7th in the same heat in 12.85. Roisin Dobey was our lone female competitor and she ran 13.44 for 6th place in her heat. Earlier in the week on the track, we had athletes take part in the 5th Dublin graded meet, this time being held on the track in Tallaght. In the women’s 800m B1 race, Léa Braud placed 4th in a time of 2:25.71, whilst, in the men’s A2, Finn Boyle took 2nd place in 1:56.05 behind John Fitzsimons (1:47.01) who was to go on to take silver in the Nationals behind Mark English. Paul E. Kelly ran in the D1 graded race, placing 9th in 3:03.92. Finally, Joe McDermott and Luke Davis joined 9 other athletes in the men’s CD1 5000m, with Joe taking 3rd place in 17:29.53 and Luke running 18:25.31 for 5th spot. Back to the Docklands 5k and it turned out that we had several clubmates take part in the event, some as part of a corporate team. The race was won by Rathfarnham’s Kevin Donagher in 16:05, who had to work hard to achieve the win over young Noah Watt of Willowfield Harriers in Belfast. The 13-year-old, clearly someone to watch for the future, ran 16:07. The women’s race was won by another athlete from Northern Ireland, City of Derry Spartans AC’s Ciara Toner, in 17:19. So no course records were broken this year and John Coghlan’s 14:30 and Shona Heaslip’s 16:12 set in 2017 are safe for another 12 months. Fearghal O’Hare ran well to place 4th overall in 16:24 after he stormed through towards the end. Dave Carter (99th in 19:13) and Conor Macguinness (154th in 20:03), who were representing valuable sponsors, also ran excellent races. It would have been a fun experience being cheered on by the great turnout of stewards from the club who were praised by the field for their vociferous encouragement as well as helping the event to go ahead without incident. We should not forget those members of the junior section of the club who performed the invaluable tasks of water distribution, so necessary on the evening, and supervising the bag drop at Capital Dock. The results of those Crusaders participating in the race can be found below. Congrats to them. The following evening several members of the club went out to Co. Kildare to run the 5k hosted by St. Coca’s in Kilcock. It’s a brilliant, well-organised event (with a fine spread at the end to rival that of the BHAA’s) and 486 runners of the maximum 600 who had signed up contested the race (a similar ratio to our event). The race was run in slightly windy conditions, but these were not so noticeable along the narrow high-hedged roads. It was a bit tight at the start and quite a lot of potential trips were on the cards in the early stages as runners fought for position. A few of us might have recorded slightly faster times without this, but it in on way detracted from the experience. Ian Guiden’s repeat win was interesting and his time an excellent 14:12, whilst Mary Mulhare ran an excellent 16:36 for her win. Crusaders had some great results too in a field of some quality. Vinnie McGuinness led our contingent home in 16:21 for 42nd place, and his chiptime was matched by Michael Wycherley who placed 44th. Ciarain Kelly will have been happy with his time of 16:34 for 58th place, as was Joe McDermott who improved on his midweek track time for the distance by 8 seconds, placing 104th in 17:21. Newcomer Patrick Conlon was next (112th in 17:28) and he was followed by Phelim Murray with a tremendous second half burst of speed to record a time of 19:13, his fastest 5k in a good while, for 208th place. Kathryn Sweeney maintained her solid form, finishing in 19:32 (226th and 38th woman across the line) and she was followed by Sarah Lyons, Phelim’s fiancée, who also recorded a PB, breaking 20 minutes for the first time, with a sound 19:40 (232nd and 41st). James Cottle was effectively pulled round by Sarah, enabling him to record a time of 19:45 for 235th place and he was followed not so far behind by ladies’ captain Rebecca Fleming, who took 262nd and 53rd places in a time of 20:10. Miriam Logan’s time of 20:19 was an incredible PB improvement of over 40s for the distance as she finished in 270th and 56th places. The contingent was completed by Kathryn Gibbons (274th and 59th in 20:27), Emer Kenny (309th and 79th in 21:04), Dee Ni Chearbhaill (316th and 84th in 21:08), Alan Kavanagh (317th in 21:05), Amy McGuinness (330th and 90th in 21:24), Margaret Foley (353rd and 102nd in 22:03), Olwyn Dunne (368th and 114th in 22:24), Tanja Narancic (377th and 120th in 22:47), Paul E. Kelly (424th in 24:52) and Aoife Cowhie, coming back from injury (446th and 167th in 26:11). All of us recorded decent times on an almost circular (counter-clockwise) and flat course. On the same evening, Tim O’Donnell took part in the Courtmacsherry 10k down in Co. Cork, where, on a largely flat, but with a couple of drags in the middle and towards the end on an out-and-back west-east, course from Courtmacsherry to Timoleague, Tim placed 55th in a field of 247, in a time of 41:10. Then, on Sunday we had runners take part in two of the three distances on offer in the Viking Waterford festival. Eddie Nugent and Emily Glen took part in the hilly out-and-back half marathon which enjoyed a field of 674 finishers. Eddie had a super run, placing 12th in a time of 1:24:48, whilst Emily also enjoyed the experience, running 1:47:46 for 172nd place overall and 25th female finisher. Stephen Mulligan took on the full marathon where he placed 111th in a field of 258 and a time of 4:01:15. Further afield, Ian Kinsella, our exile in Canada, ran in the Pride 5k in Toronto where he finished in a time of 17:33. Also, a result we missed from last week was Pablo Sanchez’ 3rd place finish in a mile road race in Madrid. Pablo’s time was a superb 4:29. In the Wicklow mountains last week, IMRA runners had the chance to take on Sorrell Hill on Wednesday evening, a 9.45k out-and-back race to the summit, involving forest trails and open mountain running on moderate terrain. The event contained a climb of 392m. We had three clubmates in the race: In a field of 120, Warren Swords placed 6th in 45:35, whilst Becky Quinn won the women’s race in 51:41, placing 18th overall. Gavan Doherty completed the contingent with a 90th place finish in 74:48. Further afield, Pat Quill headed to England where he took part in the 182.5k Spine Challenge in the Pennines there, finishing the punishing ultra-marathon in a total time of 29 hours and 22 minutes. Well done to Pat! The parkruns this weekend produced something like our usual share of first finishers and podium places. We had 4 first finishers. In Tolka Valley, Ilona McElroy and her partner Paul Fleming from Rathfarnham WSAF (and coach to 1500m national champion Carla Sweeney) shared the spoils, with Paul placing first overall and Ilona, who is coming back from injury, taking 5th place and first female finisher in 21:05. In the same event, Phelim Murray completed his 3rd 5k in as many days, placing 4th in 20:59, whilst his partner Sarah Lyons placed 8th and 2nd in 24:02. The field measured 28 runners. Jan Manschot was the latest Crusader to finish first in Poolbeg. Jan led the field of 142 home in a time of 17:41 and he was followed by Kenan Furlong in 2nd place with a time of 17:44. Sharon Woods also was a first finisher again in that event, placing 33rd in 22:10. In Poolbeg, Sam Carvill crossed the line in 7th place (19:10) and he was followed by John Lohan (19th in 21:03), Stephen Mulligan, warming up for the following day’s marathon (43rd in 23:42), Josie Ward (50th and 5th in 24:21), Maureen McGinley (105th and 31st in 28:25) and Ali May Hann tailwalking. Peter O’Toole placed first in St. Anne’s in a time of 16:47. In a field of 317, Michael Maughan followed in 32nd spot (21:24), and he was followed by Tim Hyland (154th in 26:56). In the US, Tara Murphy ran once again in the Delaware and Raritan Canal parkrun, where, in a field of 43, she placed 7th overall and 2nd woman home in 25:41. Paul and Aoife Kelly took on Portumna, where, in a field of 27, Paul placed 4th in 23:01 and Aoife ran 28:10 for 13th and 3rd places. Eoghan Corrigan continues to put in good times pushing a buggy, placing 13th in 22:40 in Kilcock, with a field of 110, whilst Donatas Jocius ran in Bushy Park, where, alongside 215 other participants, he placed 7th in 19:40. Kate Murray ran 23:57 in Mullingar where, in a field of 56, she placed 18th and 5th, whilst Darina Scully took part in the run in River Valley, where she placed 34th and 10th in 29:46. There were 72 participants in the event. Deirdre Kennedy and Brian Scanlan joined 196 other runners in Malahide, with Brian placing 26th in 21:55 and Deirdre, 128th and 33rd in 28:32, whilst Colm Foley was our singleton runner in Griffeen Park, where, in a 130-strong field, he placed 28th in 23:15. Over in Poppintree, Diarmuid Byrne placed 60th in 28:40, whilst partner Maria Pertl placed 77th and 28th in 31:39. There were 106 participants in the event. The 130-strong field in Cabinteely included Mairin Shine (70th and 19th in 29:24), Lisa Shine (80th and 23rd in 29:58) and Miriam Logan (81st and 24th in 30:09). Finally, we also had three runners in Shanganagh. In a field of 157, Ciara Bolger ran 26:57 for 69th and 14th, followed by Orlaith de Burca (94th and 29th in 28:31) and Jill Nason (95th and 30th in 28:37).
