 Bob Lyne A little bit quieter this week in terms of races and participation, but not so calm on the weather front as anyone running over the weekend can testify. We’ve been blessed with a year of little in the way of wind but it seems to be coming back with a vengeance and providing us with conditions with which we used to be all too familiar. We start with the Aware 5 and 10k races that took place on Saturday morning in the Phoenix Park. Both races attracted big fields and both were run on the same 5k loop that took in Chesterfield Avenue, the Ordnance Survey Road, Upper Glen Road and Furze Road at the top of the park. A bit hilly in places, particularly down in the Furry Glen by the pond and, therefore, even without the cold and windy conditions, probably not regarded as a PB course. So it was somewhat surprising that some may have achieved PBs on the day. We had one runner in the 572-strong 5k race. Karl Gohery managed a top-50 finish with a time of 22:45 and 32nd place, whilst in the 10k, which saw a dead heat finish between Brian Maher and Sean Hehir at the sharp end of the race, we had 4 runners among the more than 860 who turned out for the event. James Cahill was first across the line for the club, placing 14th in 38:39, whilst Luke Davis also managed to place in the top 20 with a run of 39:20 to take 18th. Next came Barry McGuirk another in the top 50, placing 47th in 41:20. Carina Davidson also ran, taking 256th place overall, 58th female finisher, in a time of 50:44. Mention should also be made of Lydia Bigley of Dublin Front Runners who trains with the club. Lydia broke 48 minutes for the first time (clearly showing her training is paying off!) placing 134th overall, 18th female finisher, in a PB time of 47:45. On the same day we had a couple of athletes participating in two of the events in Clonakilty. This was the 9th year of the Clonakilty Waterfront marathon and Bob Cahill ran in the marathon itself, whilst Padraig Sheehan took on the 10K. Bob is just coming back from injury so he will have been delighted with his 3:29:13 and 41st place finish in a field of 373 runners, whilst Padraig came home in a splendid 4th place in the 10k in a time of 37:00 ahead of nearly 660 other runners. Further afield, on Sunday our Texan exiles, Yvonne Macauley and Alan Sheehy, ran in the Dallas Half marathon, which apparently measured a little long. Both ran well, with Yvonne placing 73rd overall, 11th female finisher, in a time of 1:26:10 despite finding the going tough and Alan placing 255th in 1:35:39. Finally, Bob Lyne represented the club in the National Roadwalking Championships on Saturday morning, held in Raheny. Bob walked a creditable 31:25 for the 5k to finish 3rd in his age category and nearly half a minute faster than in the same race last year. As usual, the last part of the report is dedicated to those running in the parkruns. On the face of it attendance seemed a little lower this week than of late, probably because of the weather on Saturday morning. Times may also have been slightly slower too. Podium results went to Sarah Lyons and Olwyn Dunne in Fairview, Stephen Hurley in Poolbeg, Katie Rogers in Tralee, Lisa Shine in Vandeleur, Dave Carter in Cabinteely and Kris Ryan in Paradise Point in Australia. In Fairview, Sarah placed 14th overall, 1st female finisher in a time of 23:29. Sarah was preceded by Phelim Murray (12th in 22:51) and followed by Olwyn in yet another parkrun for her (21st overall, 3rd female, in 25:24). Katie was our only participant in Tralee, but she placed 13th overall, 1st female finisher, in 21:16, whilst Stephen led home a large contingent from the club in Poolbeg. He came home in first place in 17:06, followed by Dave Tilly (10th in 20:26), Russell Murphy (26th in 22:36), Fiona Bane (28th overall, 4th woman, in 22:39), Derek Ryan (30th in 22:59), Sharon Woods (41st overall, 9th woman, in 24:13), Cliodhna O’Reilly (57th overall, 18th woman, in 25:34), Aisling O’Riordan (65th overall, 23rd woman, in 27:49) and Mari Hansen (77th overall, 29th woman, in 30:01). Lisa ran in Vandeleur Park in Kilrush Co. Clare, placing 7th overall, 2nd woman home, in 25:34, whilst Dave Carter was also 2nd in Cabinteely in a time of 20:48. He was followed by Emma O’Mahony (43rd overall, 10th woman, in 26:19) and Mairead Cashman (68th overall, 21st woman, in 29:55). Kate Murray placed 32nd overall, 4th woman home, in 23:05 in Bushy park, whilst Colm Foley took 25th place in 22:05 in Griffeen. Leo Lundy ran 29:15 in Knocknacarra, the ultra-runner taking 47th place, whilst Lorraine Fitzsimons placed 306th overall, 81st female finisher, in 31:21 in St. Anne’s. Hat off to Darina Scully who continues to put in good times during her pregnancy, placing 42nd overall, 12th female, in 27:06 in Poppintree. Outside the country, Kris Ryan took 32nd place overall, 3rd female finisher, in Paradise Point in 22:52 running alongside 184 other participants, whilst Aidan Hudner ran again in Victoria Park in Glasgow.
