The main highlight of the week for the club was the Docklands 5k, for its 5th year of running since having been taken back by Crusaders AC, with a record number of entrants and, hopefully, a record amount of income to help us to build a clubhouse. Although there was a heavy rain shower an hour before the gun, we were as usual blessed with good running weather, the westerly breeze proving to be more help than a hindrance to achieving decent times. Because so many members were involved in stewarding on the night, we had only a smattering of participants in the race itself, apart from the 11 pacers (who did a super job, their times speaking for themselves), and they acquitted themselves well. There were no new course records this year, particularly as the overall race winner, Dunboyne’s Peter Somba, was on his own for most of the race without anyone to push him, but, for the first time, AAI-affiliated clubs could compete for two trophies, the John Fitzsimons Cup for the winning male club team and the Mary Purcell Cup for the winning women’s team. The male winners for this inaugural event were Leevale, just seconds ahead of Sportsworld who generally fielded a significant contingent, whilst the women’s cup did unsurprisingly go to the Terenure-based club. Out of the Crusaders runners we did see in the race, of whom there were at least 9, we witnessed at least one PB, from David Carter, an organiser of one of our sponsors, who placed 107th in a field of 1,686 finishers, in a time of 18:52. Ahead of Dave came Luke Davis in 105th place but with a chiptime of 18:54. Gavan Doherty, another of our sponsors, placed 142nd in 19:36. Thomas Martini was next in 147th place with 19:40, followed by Phelim Murray (168th in 19:55). Another sponsor, Mike Stewart, placed 378th in 21:43, followed by Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos (22:32 in 466th overall and 60th female finisher), Jean Devlin (958th and 200th in 25:37) and Mor Hazan (1,215th and 311th in 28:49). Then on Saturday, we had a decent turnout for the 40th running of the fast Dunshaughlin 10k, which had a large field reflective of the fact that it’s part of the 9 race Kia Series (runners needing to race at least 5 of the events). The race was won by DSD’s Hiko Tonosa by one second from Mick Clohisey whom he passed with 400m to go, with Peter Somba a further 45 seconds back, feeling the effects of his effort in Thursday night’s Docklands run. In 13th place, Fionnuala McCormack also had a super performance, breaking Lizzie Lee’s course record by running 32:17. Kieran Little was our first runner across the line in 17th place in a field of 940. Kieran ran 32:45 and he was followed by Rob Cross (51st in 34:46), who, on the line, undid Joe McDermott’s passing with about 400m to go (52nd in a fantastic 70 second improved time of 34:47). Joe Walsh was next in 82nd place in a PB time of 36:09, followed by Ciarain Kelly (110th in 37:08). Mick Smyth also ran a PB by placing 144th in 38:08, as did Ollie McGrath (151st in 38:20) and Alma Hanevy who placed 178th overall, 12th woman and 3rd in her age category, in a super time of 39:03. So, both Joe and Alma, husband and wife, recorded PBs in the same race. Michael Maughan was another runner to break 40 minutes, taking 190th place in 39:32 and he was followed by Gian Piero Allerta (296th in 42:43), Kate Murray (413th and 68th in 46:26) and Emma O’Mahony (571st and 140th) in 51:01. The race was also notable for Irish records for Paul Elliott as an M65 who ran 38:32 and for Tommy Hughes, holder of the 5k, half marathon and marathon world records for a 59-year old who was going for a world record in the 10k. He missed out on that by 4 seconds, with his spectacular time of 33:13 for 24th place, enough, however, for the Irish record at least. We also had runners in other races during this time. The day after Docklands the 8th running of the Dublin Pride 5k took place. Conducted on a mixture of grass and asphalt, with two laps of the Phoenix Park’s 15 Acres where we train on Saturdays, it enjoyed a field of 878 on Friday night. Seamus Moore was the first Crusader to cross the finish line in 17:38, followed by Marius McNicholas, making a welcome return to racing, in 47th (19:37) and Dee Ni Chearbhaill (107th overall and 9th woman home) in 21:45. Then on Saturday, Bob Cahill was our sole representative in the Waterford Viking half marathon where in a field of 975, Bob placed 107th in a time of 1:29:30. Leo Lundy helpfully reported that Kris Ryan was one of only 3 finishers in the Brisbane Valley 200 mile race in Queensland, Australia, over the weekend, whilst on Saturday he competed in the national 24 hour championships in Belfast for 50km and his 95th ultra-marathon. There was also some great track athletics over the weekend. Mike McGovern and Susan Walsh were accompanied by a gang from the club helping out in Belfast at the Mary Peters Track for the annual meet there of the Irish Milers Club, where some solid performances from our runners were recorded. In the A standard 5000m Michael Kiely recorded a possible PB with his 10th place finish in 15:26.42, whist Italo Giancaterina also ran well in the B standard of the same distance with 3rd place and 15:55.15. Michael O’Conor placed 7th in 4:12.75 in the 1500m C race, whilst in the women’s 1500m Niamh Allen recorded a PB of 4:26.23 for 5th place in a strong field. Kevin Woods maintained his form by running a season’s best 1:51.36 in the 800m A standard race with a 5th place finish, whilst Fearghal O’Hare found himself getting closer to Joe Warne in the 800m B race, placing 2nd in 1:54.58, another possible PB. Another SB was recorded by Mary Horgan who ran 2:13.58 and placed 2nd in the women’s 800m B standard race. On Sunday, we heard that in the same stadium Adam McMullen is making further improvement as he returns from a major Achilles injury by jumping 7.43m. Late news is that at the weekend Andrew Mellon joined Brandon Arrey, Sinead Denny (who trains in Irishtown) and Catherine McManus to represent Ireland in the 4x400m relay at the inaugural European Games in Minsk in Belarus under the format of Dynamic New Athletics (DNA). The team took a creditable 4th place in a time of 3:24.37 and added 6 important points to the country's total. Some of our members took part in the weekly IMRA league race on Wednesday. This time, the event was the Powerscourt Uphill which required an ascent of Djouce, a total climb of nearly 700m over a race distance of 6.5km. Warren Swords led our contingent across the line in 10th place in a field of 181. Warren’s time was 43:22, and he was followed by Pat Quill (53rd in 50:32) and Anthony O’Reilly (54th in 50:34) pretty much together, just ahead of Brian McGuckin (64th in 52:00). Gavan Doherty was next (85th in 55:21), limbering up for Docklands the following evening, followed by Laura Flannelly (98th overall and 10th female in 56:20) and Dorothy Maguire (129th and 20th in 61:35). We had runners in 11 parkruns on Saturday morning. In the UK, Mari Hansen participated in the 163-strong field in the Gunpowder Parkrun in Waltham Abbey in Essex, placing 50th and 9th in 25:55, whilst Eileen Coughlan placed 57th and 9th in the 213-strong field of Harcourt Hill in Oxford. Our first finishers on Saturday were Ronan Moynihan in Marlay (18:22, exactly the same as he recorded last week), James Cahill in Lough Key (18:27) and Adam Flanagan in Poolbeg (17:31). Podium places went to Barry O’Mahony (3rd in Cabinteely in 19:43), Aoife Kelly (25th and 2nd in 23:01 in Bushy Park) and Kenan Furlong (2nd in Poolbeg to Adam in 18:30). In Bushy Park, Paul F. Kelly placed 11th in 20:50, followed by Mairead Cashman (109th and 39th in 29:35). In Ballincollig Barry O’Neill placed 50t in 22:13, whilst Peter O’Toole took 4th place in St. Anne’s in 17:32. Brian Scanlan took 10th spot in Malahide in 19:40, whilst Killian Barry placed 6th in 19:15 in Marlay. Colm Foley crossed the line in 37th spot in Griffeen Park with a time of 23:38, whilst Adam and Kenan were followed in Poolbeg by Tim Francony (7th in 19:50), Thomas Martini (20th in 21:20), David O’Donnell (25th in 21:42) and Ava Rose Clarke (58th and 8th in 24:41).
