It was a relatively quiet week for racing, with the principal highlights being the DLR Bay 10k on Bank Holiday Monday and the Kinsale Regatta 5 miler, both events taking place in scenic sailing venues.
The course for the DLR Bay road race takes runners from Sandycove via Seapoint Avenue along the coast to Monkstown, then heads up to Sallynoggin and ultimately back down via Glenageary to the finish on the seafront near Dun Laoghaire station. It’s quite a challenging route and the severe downhill in the second half of the race means the legs take quite a beating. Thankfully, the weather held up for the event and provided sunny conditions after a cool start with a bit of a breeze. There were more than 750 participants in the race and they were joined by at least 8 Crusaders. Dee Lawlor was our first man home in 22nd place in a great time of 36:50 and he was followed by Paul Reidy with a strong 38:16 for 30th spot. Kiera Roche, in 57th place overall and 5th female finisher behind winner Clonliffe’s Ailish Malone, was next across the line in a time of 41:30, followed by Liam Morris (69th in 41:38) who, like Ailish Malone, hasn’t been on the racing scene for some time. Gian Piero Allerta (in 132nd place with a time of 45:14) was next and he was followed by Olwyn Dunne, fresh of a flight from Bangkok, who not only placed among the top 20 women (187th and 20th in 47:11), but was also 4th F45. Next came Carina Davidson (322nd and 46th in 50:37) who was a late entrant, and then Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos (358th and 59th in 49:15). Gavan Doherty had been in two minds whether to run the race, having completed a 15 mile run in 2 hours the previous day as part of his preparation for the Dublin marathon, but decided to run the race as a training run (932nd in 1:08:13). Of note, Dee, Paul and Kiera finished as 3rd placed mixed team out of 17 behind Sli Cualan and Sportsworld. Over the weekend Leo Lundy reported that he ran the 50k Spartans Way which took place in Counties Kildare and Offaly along the Grand Canal and members will be interested to hear that Lydia Bigley who has trained with the club recorded a PB of 46:18 in the Berlin Night Run 10k. On holiday on the French Atlantic coast, Tomas Dunne took part in a hilly 7.5km trail race which he finished in a great time of 30:53. Closer to home, over the weekend, Frank Hague joined 300 other runners in the Kinsale Regatta 5 mile race, one of Ireland's fastest 5 mile races with a steep downhill after 2km as the point to point event heads down from the hinterland to the coastal town, placing 13th in an excellent time of 29:18. There was the usual midweek action in the mountains with a race around Ballinastoe (White Hill) in County Wicklow. The IMRA-organised event enjoyed a field of 164 on a difficult course measuring 12km involving a climb of nearly 500m, but in dry conditions. We had 4 club-mates in the race. Warren Swords placed 4th and 2nd M40 in a time of 55:07 and he was followed by Gavan Doherty (37th in 64:34), Emily Glen (145th and 28th in 94:51) and Berndt Heim (154th in 100:08). Finally, we come to a round-up of the parkruns. We had to go abroad to find a first finisher from the club. Continuing their holiday in western Canada, Sarah Lyons and Phelim Murray ran in Okanagan with 66 other runners. Sarah placed 1st finisher (8th overall) in 22:59, whilst Phelim came home in 7th place in 22:48. All the same, we did have some podium finishes in one other event. In Poolbeg, Fiona Bane placed 34th overall and 2nd female in 22:26, whilst she was followed by Tara Murphy (42nd and 3rd in 23:31. Just behind Tara came Sharon Woods (47th and 4th in 23:55). Others to run there included Zlatko Kulic (8th in 19:35), followed by Gillian Curran (58th and 7th in 25:08), Ava Rose Clarke (68th and 12th in 26:03), Cliodhna O’Reilly (81st and 19th in 27:38) and Karla Woods (108th and 35th in 30:48). There were good runs in Marlay where Luke Davis placed 9th in 18:49 and Kate Murray placed 118th and 13th in 24:28. In River Valley Brian Scanlan ran well within himself to finish in 22:03 for 6th place, as did Emer Kenny who placed 197th and 48th in 27:25 in St. Anne’s, whilst Colm Foley placed 36th in Griffeen Park in a time of 24:28. Darina Scully was our lone runner in Malahide where she placed 292nd and 104th in 32:11, as was Anna Shine in the parkrun on Wexford Racecourse where she placed 40th and 8th in 26:41. Aoife and Paul Kelly ran in Poppintree where Aoife placed 74th and 21st in 29:48 and Paul ran 29:56 for 77th spot. Mairin Shine took 34th and 18th place in Tolka Valley in 32:51, whilst Mary Dolan, in training for the Dublin marathon ran 29:28 for 46th and 17th spot in Glen River.
