The report starts with the 2nd Dublin graded meet of the season that took place on Wednesday, this time in Tallaght stadium on a windy evening. We had athletes in 6 events on the night, one of them in the field. After having started out too slow in his words at the first meet and this time getting his tactics right from the start, Brendan Glynn recorded a PB of 5:18.00, placing 4th in the men’s 1500 D race, ahead of Denis Murphy who came home in 5th place in 5:22.61. Paul Kelly took 9th spot in 7:15.67. Emer Kenny was our sole representative in the women’s 1500m C race, and she was happy to take 8th place in a large field in a time of 5:42.55, an excellent time for the start of her track season. Paul Kelly ran again in the 200m C1 race, placing 8th in 34.34, whilst John O’Loughlin ran the same distance in the C2 race, and finished in 4th place in a time of 26.48. In the men’s mixed A, B, C and D 5000m, Frank Halligan finished in 16:43.98 and 6th place, whilst Joe McDermott on the back of his Limerick marathon relay effort a couple of days earlier, followed in 11th in 17:34.62. Finally, Iris Fetahovic took on the women’s long jump, placing 3rd with a leap of 3.92m. We then come to the highlight of the weekend, the Terenure 5 mile road race, organised by Sportsworld, which attracted in excess of 1,300 runners (sold out for the 2nd successive year). Among them, were more than 30 Crusaders who definitely made their mark on the event, helped enormously by the strength of the vociferous club support around the course which, as usual, is second to none. The race was run in quite warm, sunny and calm conditions on roads around the perimeter and more of Terenure College. It involved one big lap followed by one smaller and the race was fast and generally flat (or at least the drags were not too noticeable!). The 16 women representing the club ran extremely well, with the senior team scorers of Ilona McElroy, Catherine Thornton, Kiera Roche and Edel Haverty agonisingly missing out on a prize by countback, having the same score (74 points) as DSD who were awarded second place (and only the first two teams were awarded prizes). So our team was given 3rd. There was some consolation for Ilona, however, as she won 1st prize in the F35 category, having placed 6th (76th overall) in a time of 30:37. Catherine and Kiera followed Ilona in, respectively, 14th and 15th places (101st and 105th overall, in, respectively, 31:52 and 31:55), whilst Edel was a little further back in 39th place (215th overall, in a time of 34:37). 12 of our runners finished in the top 150 places, with Dee Ni Chearbhaill running strongly and leading the masters team home (218th overall, 40th woman, and 6th in her age category, in 34:39). Dee was followed by Grainne Regan (229th overall, 44th woman, in 34:48) and Olwyn Dunne (319th overall, 67th woman, 7th in her age category, in 36:39). The three women scorers on the masters team collectively finished in 4th place. Behind Olwyn came Rachael Yorke (341st overall, 77th woman, in 37:28) running really well considering she is recovering from a recent appendectomy and Marie Kennedy a little further back (351st overall, 78th woman, in 37:37). Niamh Quinn was next (378th overall, 90th woman, in 38:06), followed by Miriam Logan in her first 5 miler (449th overall, 116th woman, in 38:49) and Carina Davidson (528th overall, 135th woman, in 39:43). The Cru female contingent was completed by Sharon Woods (723rd overall, 221st woman, in 42:21), Jean Devlin (806th overall, 270th woman, in 44:34), Michelle Geoghegan, who’s only recently been getting into competitive running (881st overall, 315th woman, in a PB time of 45:44) and Mairead Cashman (912th overall, 337th woman, in 46:18). Like Ciara Hickey who won in Tallaght last week and then led the women home in Terenure, Peter Somba, who won in Limerick last week, won in Terenure, this time getting the better of Mick Clohisey (winning by 1 second). Our men were not too far back and we had 10 runners finishing among the top 150. As to be expected, Joe O’Donoghue was first across the line for the club in 7th place in 25:56, just two minutes behind the winner. Rob Cross, the first of our masters, was next a minute later in 13th place (26:58) and 1st in the M40 age category, followed by John Mulvihill, testing himself out after an injury absence, (16th in 27:20) and newcomer Stephen O’Kennedy (35th in 28:41). Our next two scoring masters came in just behind Stephen. Joe McDermott, running in his third racing event in 7 days, placed 40th in 28:56 and Frank Hague took 49th spot in a time of 29:19. These results meant that Rob, Joe (a recent arrival to the masters) and Frank took top spot in the team rankings in the masters category, successfully defending the title won last year (and possibly even the year before). Behind Frank came Andrea Talpo with a likely PB (74th in 30:28) and Andrea was followed by James Cottle who ran negative splits and worked his way steadily through the field (90th in 31:22 and 1st in his M60 age category). Eddie Nugent followed (113th in 32:11), with Gearoid Grogan a little further back (132nd in 32:54). Other great times came from Tom Dunne (167th in 33:34), Gian Piero Allerta (172nd in a PB time of 33:48), David Timoney (176th in 33:51), Denis Murphy in a PB equalling time of 33:53 (179th), Eanna Farrell (199th in 34:29) and Phelim Murray (205th in 34:29) whose parents declared that he’d enjoyed too much of the cheese plate at their anniversary celebrations the night before. Noel Reilly, just getting back into it, was next (208th in 36:07), followed by Joe Dunne who threw caution to the wind, running with freedom, to record a super 36:27 (308th). A great time was had by all, especially those who appreciated the free massage both before and after the race. Having also organised the race well, Sportsworld laid on quite a decent spread at the end. Leo Lundy reported that he flew to the USA and, just off the plane, he decided to enter the Switchback marathon near Dripping Springs, Texas, his 75th trail marathon. Leo embarked on this adventure on the back of no sleep, in humid temperatures around 93 degrees Fahrenheit and on a course involving a 2,600ft monster climb. The race involved 2 x 13.1 mile laps around a twisty and extremely rocky ranch trail. It was really hilly and Leo even encountered a snake on the trail. Despite being well down the field, having coped with difficulty with the heat, Leo discovered that he was the oldest in the race by some distance and won the Grand Master age category, winning a cowboy hat as well as a voucher. Despite the sunny start to the weekend, Parkrun numbers appeared to be generally down on the bank holiday weekend. All the same, we were well represented. Darina Scully took first finisher position (11th overall) in Father Collins in a time of 22:31. Darina was preceded home by Matt Cranley with a new PB time with his buggy (3rd in 19:51). Sarah Lyons also podiumed in Fairview (16th overall, 3rd woman, in 24:47), just behind Phelim Murray (before the anniversary bash!) who placed 10th in 23:44. Further afield, Joe Walsh and Alma Hanevy, on holiday in Singapore, took on East Coast Park, with Joe placing 4th in 18:12 and Alma 20th overall, 2nd female finisher, in 20:52 in a field of nearly 90 runners. Again, even further away, Kris Ryan placed 32nd overall, 7th female, in 23:54, in the 131-strong field in Coomera once again. By contrast, our Scottish exile, Aidan Hudner, came home to run in Shanganagh, taking 32nd place in a time of 23:17. Mairead Cashman was our sole runner in Bushy Dublin, placing 95th overall, 21st female, in 29:22 and, likewise, women’s captain Lisa Shine represented us in Clonakilty placing 16th overall, 5th woman, in 28:10. Colm Kernan was also on his own in Marlay, taking 25th spot in 20:21, along with Brendan Kieran (21st in 24:37) in Hartstown, whilst Brian Scanlan took 5th place in River Valley in a time of 19:55. Diarmuid Byrne and Maria Pertl decided to run in Poppintree on Saturday, with Diarmuid finishing in 12th place in 21:01 and Maria, 70th overall, 21st female, in 27:06. Finally, we had a significant contingent in our local parkrun in Poolbeg. Kieran Finucane led the members home in 5th place (19:27), followed by David O’Donnell (10th in 20:45), Fiona Bane (42nd overall, 5th female, in 24:22), Rhona McGrath, making a welcome return to running (54th overall, 11th female, in 25:45), Donna Barry (57th overall, 13th woman, in 26:12), Mary Dolan (66th overall, 18th woman, in 26:38), Jennifer Armstrong (85th overall, 29th woman, in 29:12) and Don Anderton (103rd in 33:33).
