The week long Christmas and New Year break gave loads of our members the opportunity to race. Perhaps, it was seen as an excellent opportunity to get out of the house, escape all the tension of Christmas dinner preparations, or just to build up an appetite for the inevitable over-eating. Whatever, but the opportunities seemed endless and several runners made full use of them. It is perhaps not surprising also how popular the parkruns were, given that several of them found volunteers to marshall on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, a tradition likely started in the UK but now it seems available in certain parts of Ireland too. They were extremely popular during this period and we even saw the likes of Mick Clohisey and Lizzie Lee turning out to run in one. We were definitely helped by the dry and mild conditions that encouraged us out into the fresh air. The first race of note was the Fields of Athenry held on St. Stephens Day. It’s an event in its 17th year and Crusaders have a good history of participation and success, particularly in the women’s race. Taking a route around the town from the railway station and finishing under its mediaeval arch, conditions for the race this year were cool and crisp, even enjoying a brief appearance of the sun. We had 6 runners in the field of nearly 1200. Brian O’Kelly finished in a PB time of 31:55 on an impressive podium behind Mick Clohisey and Hugh Armstrong. Catherine Thornton was our second Crusader home, running 41:11 to take 111th spot overall 7th female finisher, just ahead of Irene Gorman (135th overall, 10th woman) in 41:59 and Aine Kenny (142nd overall, 12th female finisher) in 42:14. The contingent was completed by Diarmuid Fahey (166th in 43:05) and Brendan Glynn (268th in 46:05). As this is the last race report of the year, the opportunity to comment on what has been a huge development for runners this year should not be missed. Both Mick and Brian, along with many other racers, have bought into the shoe technology that helped Eliud Kipchoge break the marathon world record in Berlin in September (it now stands at 2:01:39, a full 78s having been clipped off the previous record). The Nike shoes stand out a mile with their orange mesh uppers and Mick wore his for the first time in Athenry (see main photo), coming home in a sub-30 minutes time and a new course record. Anyone who owns a pair of these shoes will testify that the feel is like no other shoe that they have run in. It will be interesting to see if other manufacturers try to replicate the technology and also whether the hefty price for them will come down! The shoes were also in evidence on the same day in Wicklow, at the Inbhear Dee AC Streets of Wicklow 5k. In the field exceeding 400 runners, we had 3 runners finishing behind Hiko Tonosa (14:53) and teenage sensation Emma O’Brian (who ran well recently in the European Cross-country championships in Holland) (16:56) who was just ahead of Linda Byrne (17:03). Kieran Little, another fan of the Nike shoes, ran 15:57 for 5th place, a day before taking on the Marathon Club of Ireland-organised Portumna marathon which he won in a time of 2:58. Ollie McGrath also ran in the 5k (with its uphill start), placing 51st in 18:38. Another race on this day was the Belgooly 4 mile road race down in Co. Cork. In a field that exceeded 500 runners, Shane Collins placed 9th in a time of 22:00, followed home by Robert Browne (42nd in 24:57) and Tim O’Donnell (66th in 26:41). Rachael Yorke reported that she ran in the Shane Brennan 5k in Longford on Stephen's Day along with Daniel Lowe. Rachael acquitted herself well, placing 3rd behind Catherina McKiernan (33rd overall), as did Daniel who placed 13th in a field of nearly 400. Daniel ran 17:36, whilst Rachael ran 20:08. During this period Barry O’Neill reported that he ran in the Glenbower 5k turkey trot, finishing in 25:44, whilst we had several participants in the hilly and slightly treacherous Howth Fat Turkey 10k. The race attracted a field of nearly 500 and we had at least 7 runners take part. They were led home by Dee Lawlor who placed 13th and 3rd M40 in 37:51, with Luke Davis next in 21st in a time of 39:25. Matt Cranley took 66th spot in 44:23, followed home by Simon Kenny (123rd in 47:25) and David Timoney (133rd in 47:59). Next came Olwyn Dunne (158th overall, 5th F50) in 47:59 with Paul Kelly completing the contingent (456th in 68:50). Olwyn went on to run in the East of Ireland Howth marathon 2 days later, finishing in a time of 3:57 and having traversed the hill 4 times during the race. Phelim Murray and Sarah Lyons took advantage of a Christmas visit to Sarah’s home town to run in the Aylesbury Boxing Day 5k. In a field of 221, Phelim placed 56th in 21:53 and Sarah came home in 72nd overall, 9th female finisher, in 22:46. Eddie Nugent also ran on Stephen’s Day in Co. Tipperary in an event he has run before, the Clonmel AC-organised MSD 4 mile race. Again, in a race with a large field exceeding 500, and unsurprisingly won by Brian Maher and Siobhan O’Doherty, Eddie, who placed 45th in 24:02, was joined by 2 runners who train with the club. Declan Ryan came home in 34th in 23:30, whilst Lorraine Healy finished in 109th place overall, 11 female finisher, in 26:32. On Sunday 30 December, the annual running of the Clonliffe ERP Christmas cracker 5k took place. This is a race largely run on roads around the outside of Santry Demesne but starts and finishes on the track in Morton Stadium. We had some super results among the 184 finishers. Cormac McGuire placed 51st in 20:07, followed by Paul Kelly who ran out of his skin to record a PB time of 20:35 and 54th place. Next came Aoife Kelly who finished strongly to place 77th overall (21st woman) in 22:25 and Aoife was followed immediately by Dee Ni Chearbhaill who is racing herself back to fitness (78th overall, 22nd woman, in 22:33) and then by Geraldine Clements not too far behind (82nd overall, 24th woman, in 22:57). On New Year's Day, several of us decided to forego the Tuesday session and run in the races on offer. Catherine Thornton was our lone representative in the Galway Resolution Run, a top-quality 5k race with a field of 344 finishers. Catherine ran 19:42 to place 47th overall and 5th woman finisher in a race where the 2nd place overall went to a female junior who ran 16:01. There was a reasonable Cru turnout for the Liffey Valley-organised Tom Brennan 5k in the Phoenix Park on a drizzly but not too windy morning. This is a fast 5km that takes place on a 2 lap clockwise course involving the Furze and Ordnance Survey Roads and Chesterfield Avenue. Unfortunately, it measured slightly long this year (by about 60m), but still was an excellent race (and the drizzle receded during the race) with a quality field of 685 runners, including many from the Lord Mayor's 5 Alive initiative. The Nike shoes were in evidence for two of the first three Crusaders home, Brian O'Kelly who placed 5th behind Sunday's Christmas Cracker winner in a time close to his PB of 15:19, and James Cottle who ran 19:26 in even splits, reeling in runners throughout the race, to place 69th and 4th M50 (unfortunately there was no M60 age category). The pair were split by Enda Currid who had an excellent run to finish in 63rd place and 5th M45 in 19:02. Rachael Yorke was next in 20:22 (99th overall and 19th woman) having had to stop briefly because she was suffering from a heavy cold after a fast start, and would probably have broken 20 minutes without it. Rachael was followed by TJ Bourke guiding Donnacha McCarthy around the course (100th in 20:21) and they were followed by Brendan Glynn who ran 20:55 for his 115th place. Dee Ni Chearbhaill, another runner to take on two 5k races in a short period of time, ran nearly a minute faster than her time in the Christmas Cracker two days earlier when she ran 21:39 to place 133rd overall, 32nd woman finisher. Our final runner was Stephen Price who ran 30:23 to place 398th. Declan Ryan of Thurles also ran in the race and was happy to take 42nd in 17:33 on a course that he found easier to negotiate than the MSD race he ran on Stephen's Day. In that race, the visually-impaired runner came to a juddering halt towards the end as the marshalls didn't realise that he needed to be guided towards the finish which deviated off the course. As usual, we had great support around the course. As mentioned above, we had a lot of runners in the parkruns during this period, including those held on Christmas and New Year’s Days if you could find them. The results of those that took place in Ireland are listed below and there were a few podium outcomes. On 22 December Fiona Shine placed 2nd (49th overall) in St. Anne’s in a time of 21:26, whilst Catherine Thornton was first finisher (7th overall) in Knocknacarra in 20:59. Jason Kehoe, likewise placed 2nd in Tymon in 17:24, whilst Kris Ryan placed 2nd (12th overall) in 28:30, in the 43-strong field in Surfers Paradise in Australia. Serena Moloney was first finisher (15th overall) in a time of 23:32 in Templemore, whilst Aoife Kelly took 3rd place (28th overall) in 23:59 in Corkagh. Stephen Hurley was first finisher in Poolbeg in 16:56, whilst Sharon Woods placed 4th (44th overall), in 24:28 in the same event. Brian Scanlan also took 4th in 21:47 in River Valley, whilst Mari Hansen placed 4th (22nd overall) in 28:45 in Toyen in Norway. Dairmuid Byrne came home in 2nd place in Tolka Valley in 20:28 and there were excellent results for Gillian Lyons (6th woman, 22nd overall) in Clonakilty (26:31), Luke Davis (8th in 18:36) in Marlay, Peter O’Toole (6th in 18:25) in St. Anne’s, Pierce Currid (7th in 19:51), Mary Dolan (52nd overall, 8th woman, in 25:03), Gillian Curran (57th overall, 11th woman, in 25:26) and Cliodhna O’Reilly (64th overall, 15th woman, in 25;52) in Poolbeg and Eddie Nugent (5th in 19:31) and Dave Carter (7th in 19:56) in Cabinteely. On the same day, Sarah Lyons and Phelim Murray ran in Aylesbury, placing respectively 37th (6th woman) and 31st in 22:49 and 22:12 in a field of 187 runners. Then on Christmas day we had 3 runners in the Finsbury parkrun in North London. In a field of 326 runners and on a course that was quite hilly in places, James Cottle took 28th spot in 20:48, followed by our London exile Simon Everard who likely ran about 22:45 for 62nd place and Roland Cottle who came home in 28:19 for 194th place. Waterstown and Ballincollig were also two of the Irish venues that also had a Christmas Day run perhaps for the first time. Aoife and Paul Kelly ran with Geraldine Clements in Waterstown, with Geraldine placing 90th overall (11th woman) in 24:33, followed by Aoife (167th overall, 32nd woman) in 27:47 and Paul (168th in 27:56), whilst Mairead Cashman ran in Ballincollig in Cork, taking 159th place overall, 28th woman, in 28:14. Then on the last Saturday of the year, we had a large number participating in the parkruns. Dave Carter ran 19:41 to come home as first finisher in Navan, whilst Sarah Lyons, back home now, was first finisher (21st overall) in Poolbeg in 22:45. John Thuillier placed 3rd in 19:37 in the same event. Maria Kennedy found herself on the podium in 3rd place (29th overall) in 23:59 in Kilkenny, whilst Amy Brogan took 4th spot (27th overall) in 23:34 in Castletown. Other good results came from Aidan Hudner who ran in Clarisford Park, Killaloe, Co. Clare (9th in 23:06), whilst Aoife Kelly recorded the same time as huband Paul in placing 13th overall, 4th woman, in 28:04 in Tyrrelstown. Kris Ryan ran in a field of 279 in Paradise Point in Australia to place 54th overall, 14th female, in 23:18, whilst Gillian Lyons ran in Ballincollig, coming home in 99th place overall, 12th woman, in 25:18. Mairead Cashman took 56th place overall, 8th woman in27:45 in Bushy Park, whilst Cormac McGuire ran 23:52 to take 7th spot in Tolka Valley. There were even a few parkruns on New Year's Day and we caught two of them, in Poolbeg and Cabinteely, their numbers swelled well above normal. Kieran Little decided to test out a niggly hamstring in Poolbeg and duly came home in a first finishing time of 17:10. He was joined by Tim O'Donnell (18th in 20:19) and by Fiona Bane who may well have recorded a PB with her time of 22:24 to place 2nd (40th overall). Olwyn Dunne, Gillian Curran, Sharon Woods and Paul Kelly also ran, and some of them, namely Fiona, Gillian, Olwyn and Paul went on to run in Cabinteely. They were joined there by Eddie Nugent who took 4th place in 19:23 and by Mari Hansen and Mairead Cashman. Fiona distinguished herself, placing 6th (64th overall) in 24:07.
