Running in Good Nick

We’re now in the period between the end of the track season and the start of cross country, whilst there is significant focus by road racers on autumn marathon preparation, which generally appears to be going well. As a consequence, we did not see much road racing this weekend.

Just a couple of club members took part on Saturday in the Leinster half marathon championships held in Tullamore which also included the Co. Offaly championships. In a field in the provincial race element of 454, Bob Cahill came home in 78th place in a chiptime of 1:27:44, consistent with Bob’s recent half marathon times, whilst Mary Dolan, who, like Bob, is preparing for the Dublin marathon, crossed the line in 351st place overall, 115th female finisher, in a net time of 1:58:40.

Prior to that, we had 5 runners in the latest BHAA road race that took place in Grangecastle Business Park around the Pfizer facility in Clondalkin last Wednesday. On a course that may have been slightly short, our first runner home was Karl Walsh (8th in 17:55). In a field of 173, our next athlete across the line was Sarah Lyons with a great time of 20:45 for 50th place overall (and 5th), followed by Robbie Moore with another good time (61st in 21:09). They were followed by Sharon Woods (106th and 21st in 23:53) and Paul F. Kelly (120th in 25:02).

Meanwhile, our Berlin exile, Stephen Moore, another marathoner in training, reported that he placed 3rd in the Mercedes Benz Half marathon in Germany’s capital on Sunday morning. He also won his M40 age category. The winning time was 1:05, whilst Stephen completed the course in 25 to 27 degrees heat in a time of 1:13.

On Saturday morning we had a first finisher in the most unusual of parkruns. Fiona Shine joined other members of her family, along with Olwyn Dunne, in Mountjoy Prison to race against several of the inmates there. Fiona placed 18th overall and first woman finisher in 25:29 and she was followed closely by sisters Lisa (19th and 2nd in 25:42) and Anna (20th and 3rd in 26:00). Olwyn picked up 21st and 4th in 26:23, whilst Mairin Shine placed 34th and 5th in 31:47. Only a few “outsiders” are allowed in each week, with this particular run being on the first year’s anniversary. The run was followed by tea and cakes with the residents and the ladies, the only women in the event, were even treated to a tour of a cell. Whilst Mountjoy produced our only first finisher of the day, we had excellent runs elsewhere, notably among our 11 participants in the club’s local parkrun in Poolbeg. Stephen Hurley took 2nd spot in 16:53, followed by Michael Wycherley in 3rd in 18:58 and Darran Lovely, just coming back from injury, close behind in 4th place (19:07). Next came David Timoney (8th in 19:45), followed by another marathoner in training, Mark Swan (34th in 22:16). The first of our female participants was next with Sharon Woods taking 67th overall (9th) in 24:13, followed by Ava Rose Clarke (110th and 25th in 27:35), Aisling O’Riordan (123rd and 32nd in 28:42), Cliodhna O’Reilly (124th and 33rd in 29:08), Maureen McGinley (129th and 37th in 29:26) and Mari Hansen (132nd and 39th in 29:30). John Fahy appeared on the podium in Castlehaven where he placed 2nd in 19:53, whilst John McAuley picked up 4th spot in Marlay Park where he ran 18:40. John was followed by Kate Murray (73rd and 10th) who ran 22:14 and Barry O’Neill (248th in 26:44). Brian Carroll had a good run in Griffeen where he placed 13th in 21:01, followed by Colm Foley who took 54th place in 23:52. Paul F. Kelly was our sole representative in St. Anne’s where he ran 27:05 for 269th place, whilst Steven Walker placed 21st in Belfast Victoria in a time of 20:22. Cormac McGuire ran 22:47 for 5th place in Tolka Valley, whilst in Fairview Fiona Bane placed 4th (and 32nd overall) in 25:05. Fiona was joined by Anthony Owens who took 17th spot in 23:38 and Leo Lundy acting as a tailwalker there. Maria Pertl placed 42nd and 12th in Poppintree in 25:46, followed closely across the line by partner Diarmuid Byrne (43rd in 25:46). Then, in Bushy Park, Mairead Cashman placed 127th and 38th in 28:45, whilst Brian Scanlan tailwalked in River Valley. Darina Scully continues to improve her times, this week running 25:11 for 111th and 13th in Malahide. Finally, our Australian exile, Kris Ryan, ran 24:14 in Main Beach, Queensland, fro 39th in a field of 261 and 8th female finisher.
