Your correspondent had been looking forward to taking part alongside more than 4,000 other runners, the biggest field ever, in the 36th running of the Raheny 5 miler, organised by Raheny Shamrocks on a cool, slightly windy, Sunday afternoon. This was particularly the case as we looked forward to the prospect of a World record in your correspondent’s age category. However, it was not to be, and the next best thing to running in such a race where that World record was in fact realised, is to support the more than 80 Crusaders who were able to race it. In addition to the fabulously unusual prizes (juicers, toasters, fryers etc), runners also looked forward to the famously impressive, but not exactly good for you, goodie bag, full of chocolate bars and sugary products. Your correspondent was able to obtain one, not entirely through deception, but got his come-uppance when he found that the Lucozade bottle had burst open in his backpack on the way home. Oh well…. We start, however, with the U23 track and field championships that took place in the indoor arena in Abbotstown this weekend. We had only 2 participants involved, but the club was rewarded with a gold medal in the men’s 60mH with a fine run from Valantinos Goularas, who sprinted to a time of 8:43. Valantinos also took part in the 60m sprints, where in his qualifying heat he placed 3rd in 7:18 and finishing in 5th place in the final in a time of 7:20. Rhianna McCarthy also ran in 2 events on the day, in each of which she narrowly missed out on making the final. In her heats of the 60m sprint and 200m, Rhianna ran, respectively, 7:98 for 5th place and 26:39 for 4th place. On Sunday, the same stadium hosted the 2nd round of the National Indoor League. In the first round, two weeks earlier, Nick Ennis had run in 2 races (both 60m sprints) and placed, respectively, 3rd in 7:26 and 8th in 7:21. On the 2nd day, just Ciara Barry ran as a guest, entering the 200m and the 400m where she placed, respectively, 3rd in 26:30 and 2nd in 59:46. So, back to the Raheny 5 miler. The race was truly exciting with one of its most competitive fields ever, both men’s and women’s, in a record field (where the first 15 finishers broke 24 minutes). From the start, a group of about 5 runners was able to take a lead over the field and maintained that dominance towards the end. Hiko Tonosa’s winning margin was only 1 second ahead of Hugh Armstrong who is Seville-bound to try and qualify for Tokyo in the marathon and was only 1 second shy of a course record. It was also great to see Fionnuala McCormack running so well to win the women’s race in dominant fashion, and her 5 second winning margin over Ann-Marie McGlynn does not reflect the comfort that she enjoyed for most of it. Conditions turned out to be ideal for the race and as a consequence we saw a good number of PBs. Most importantly, ex-Olympian Tommy Hughes, who made such headlines with his world record exploits as an M55 last year in every distance from 5k through to the marathon, turned 60 this month and has set about attempting to do the same thing as an M60. In his first outing he became the first 60-year old in the World to break 26 minutes in a 5 mile race. A great achievement. The Crusader results are all listed below. However, there are some standout ones. We had 6 runners among the top 100 men, two of whom recorded PBs (Stephen Hurley (65th in 26:31) and Michael Wycherley (72nd in 26:43)), whilst Michael also placed 2nd M45. Among the men, 9 registered times under 28 minutes, and the men’s senior team placed 7th overall. They were led home by Shane Collins in 37th place (25:20), followed by Michael Kiely in 44th (25:41) and Kieran Little, just getting back into racing, in 48th (25:49). David Willis’ 27:36 for 105th place was a huge surprise to him as he has done little training in the past couple of months. So, we had 15 in the top 150 and 23 in the top 250. That’s more than a quarter of our contingent. John Thuillier made a great return to competition with his time of 27:58 (a PB) for 120th spot and Peter O’Toole ran steadily for his 134th place (28:13). Ivan Kinehan was another whom we have not seen running competitively for a while and he made a decent showing with his 28:36 for 165th place. Michael Wycherley, Dee Lawlor (160th in 28:33) and Eddie Nugent (168th in a PB time of 28:47, first time under 29 minutes) took 3rd team prize in the masters O/40 team competition, maintaining a recent tradition for the club of being on the podium for that age group. Kieran Martin was another runner to make a decent return from injury, placing 275th in 30:03, followed by Seamus MacFloinn in 278th whose chiptime of 28:42 would have otherwise earned him a ranking 100 places ahead had he not been forced to start so far back as the gun went. As it was he made a decent fist of ploughing his way through the field. There were PBs for Andrew Kinneen (284th in 30:20), Brian Scanlan (an improvement of 46 seconds took him to 30:44 for 310th place), for Patrick Needham (348th in 31:14), for Tim O’Donnell (419th in 32:04), for Paul F. Kelly (492nd in 32:31) and incredibly for Joe Dunne (595th in 33:38). The men’s overall running performance was excellent, but to some extent eclipsed by Crusaders women, who took second place in the team competition (Ilona McElroy, Catherine Thornton and Maura Mahoney). Indeed our first 4 female runners home all recorded significant PBs. Ilona was first across the line in 176th overall (12th woman) in a time of 28:52, first time breaking 29 minutes, followed by Catherine Thornton who not only achieved a huge PB improvement for her 5 mile time, breaking 30 minutes for the first time (207th overall and 14th woman home), but also marked her run with a significant 5k PB as well, holding off Niamh Devlin of DSD at the end, which made the difference between placing 2nd and placing 3rd as we beat Raheny Shamrocks by only one point for 2nd place and would have lost the place on countback. Maura Mahoney was the 3rd scorer and she improved on her previous best time by 4 minutes (405th and 33rd in 32:01), followed by Rachael Yorke, another runner with a PB, breaking 32 minutes for the first time, who was actually faster on chiptime but finished behind Maura on guntime (426th and 38th in 31:59). We had 9 runners among the top 100 women, including Dee Ni Chearbhaill, our 5th runner across the line (550th and 51st in 33:29) and Sarah Lyons who achieved a PB (677th and 79th in 34:42). Overall, 14 made it to the top 150 and 19 finished in the top 250, including Ciara Lynch who recorded a PB time of 34:50 for 816th and 103rd. It was a super race to watch and Crusader singlets were everywhere. Well done to all! Members might also be interested to know that Sean Murphy, who trains with us, ran 28:47 for 170th place, along with Lorraine Healy, another non-Crusader runner regularly seen on our track on Tuesday nights, who placed 636th and 71st in 34:04. On Friday, Maurice Kelter and Paul O’Meara, the latter taking advantage of a business trip, took part in the Dubai marathon. In a field of some 3000 finishers both (for them) took it relatively easy, with Maurice placing 87th in a time of 3:02:31 and Paul taking 102nd spot in 3:06:09. There were excellent conditions for parkruns on Saturday morning, cool and sunny and with little or no wind. This week we had no first finishers, perhaps because so many of our athletes were preparing for Sunday’s Raheny 5 miler. We did, nevertheless, have a few podium places. In Oldbridge, Anna Shine placed 3rd (39th overall) in 24:33, followed home by Mairin Shine who ran 29:32, for 85th and 14th places. Frank Hague took 3rd spot in Porterstown in 18:28. He was followed by Gerard White who ran 21:20 for 8th place. Ronan Moynihan also placed 3rd in Malahide where he ran 17:46, followed by Darina Scully who placed 441st and 190th in 41:34. Then, in Poolbeg where we had some 19 participants, Kenan Furlong improved his time massively to 17:35 to finish in 2nd place. In the same event, Tom O’Dowd placed 15th in 20:06 and he was followed by David O’Donnell (26th in 20:51), Thomas Martini (49th in 22:05), Russell Murphy (55th in 22:22), Patrick Carthy (69th in 22:52), Sharon Woods (72nd and 7th in 22:58), Ava Rose Clarke (78th and 11th in 23:11), Paul Campbell (86th in 23:38), Tanja Narancic (107th and 19th in 24:28), John Lohan (120th in 24:54), Neil Brown (143rd in 26:00), Paul E. Kelly (147th in 26:06), Tara Murphy (153rd and 28th in 26:16), Gillian Curran (155th and 30th in 26:20), Cliodhna O’Reilly (161st and 33rd in 26:35), Jean Devlin (163rd and 35th in 26:38), Maureen McGinley (180th and 43rd in 27:28), Mary Dolan (181st and 44th in 27:29) just behind, young Karla Woods (189th and 50th in 27:53) and Siobhan Russell (200th and 57th in 28:32). Diarmuid Byrne was our sole representative in Tolka Valley Park where he picked up 4th place in 20:53, whilst in Bushy Park, Kate Murray ran 24:36 for 78th and 11th, followed by Mairead Cashman who ran 29:01 for 183rd and 57th places. Further afield, Aidan Hudner ran in Pollok Park in Glasgow along with 383 other participants, where he placed 47th in 22:37 and Kris Ryan ran in Main Beach in Queensland, Australia, where she placed 44th and 7th in a field of 386 and a time of 24:37. Killian Barry ran in Marlay Park where he placed 27th in 19:48, followed by Olwyn Dunne (488th and 120th in 28:58), whilst in Griffeen Park, Colm Foley ran 23:43 for 43rd spot. Paul and Aoife Kelly ran in Tymon, where Paul just edged Aoife with a time of 29:22 for 164th and Aoife finishing in 29:24 for 167th and 52nd places. Finally, Barry O’Neill completed Cabinteely in a time of 23:32 for 31st place, whilst Helena O’Keeffe ran in Ballincollig where she placed 234th and 45th in 27:32.
