![]() There was little on offer this weekend to satisfy the road warriors around Dublin and elsewhere in Ireland. On Saturday, the majority of parkruns were cancelled as a result of ice-encrusted footpaths in a lot of the parks. Even running on grass would have been tricky. Then, on Sunday morning there was really just the one road race available locally, the Lennon Solar Drogheda & District 5k, which, following the big thaw that took place overnight, was conducted in the gale force winds that followed the initial big freeze. We had two intrepid runners in the Co. Louth 5k in a field of nearly 500 runners. On an undulating out-and-back course along the Ballymakenny Road, starting and finishing on the club’s track in Drogheda, Ciarain Kelly placed 12th in a time of 16:58, followed by Patrick Conlon (17th in 17:30). Following a significant little climb at the midway point in the race, runners would have had a challenging time negotiating the nearly 50 kph south-easterly headwind which would have been in their faces practically the whole way home. Elsewhere, one of our Spanish exiles, Esther Requena Ferri won a race called the Carrera del Pavo de Novelda in Novelda, near Alicante in Spain. The distance on the city streets and parks was 4.3k and Esther won it in 16:40. We have results from 5 of the parkruns that did go ahead on Saturday morning, both locally and further afield, and we are pleased to say we had at least one first finisher and another on the podium. Paul Cowhie led home a field of 209 runners in Malahide in a time of 17:41, whilst, in her native USA, Tara Murphy ran once again in the Delaware and Raritan Canal Parkrun, placing 8th overall and 2nd female finisher in a time of 25:17 alongside 41 other participants. Colm Foley ran in Griffeen Park in Lucan where he placed 33rd in a field of 105 and in a time of 24:56, whilst Mairin Shine headed down to Wexford to run on the racecourse there, placing 37th and 15th in 29:55 in a field of 68. Darina Scully took 4th place (20th overall) in a field of 49, completing the distance in 28:17, whilst we had 3 participants in Shanganagh with its field of 158. Mairead Cashman placed 105th and 25th in 28:43, followed by Carina Davidson (123rd and 37th in 30:53), with Orlaith de Burca tailwalking.
