![]() The first road race of the week took place on Wednesday evening on the Cruiserath site of Bristol Myers Squibb’s Mulhuddart campus. Nearly 270 runners took part in this BHAA inaugural 5k event. The race itself involved 2 laps of 2.5k on a flat course with only 4 turns on each lap and long straights, ideal for potential PBs. Indeed, there were some good results among the runners, among whom were at least 5 Crusaders. Karl Walsh was the first of our contingent home in 17:22 and 12th place. It was an interesting result as Karl was to take on the Limerick marathon 4 days later with a creditable performance in that event too. Karl was followed by Ollie McGrath (32nd in 18:41) and by Robbie Moore (91st in 20:51) and Tony Hackett (128th in 22:38). Aisling O’Connor was our only female Crusader in the race, coming home in 256th place overall in a time of 33:56. Members will be interested to read that Sean Murphy, who trains with us, placed 8th in 17:03. On Saturday morning Ela Szkamruk took part in the 115-strong field of the Polskaeire 10k race in the Phoenix Park, placing 50th overall, but, more importantly, 4th female finisher, in a time of 51:17. Saturday afternoon saw the first IMC event of the year on the six-lane track down in Greystones on a beautiful sunny afternoon, with a bit of a breeze, a tailwind on the home straight. We were treated to some excellent men’s and women’s racing from 800m through 5000m, with 3 members of the club taking part in two of the races. Garret Dunne ran in the men’s 800m D race, coming home in 3rd place in a time of 2:05.82, whilst Joe O’Donohue and Michael Kiely switched places throughout the men’s 5000m B race, finally ending up respectively in 9th and 11th places, both with PB times. Joe’s participation was his first on the track and he improved on his 5k road time by about 12s to 15:13.51, whilst Michael’s PB was a little tighter (less than one second) for a time of 15:19.17. On Sunday morning, three of our number joined nearly 260 other runners to take part in the Tallaght 5k, a KIA Race Series event which also contained the Dublin novices 5k road racing championships. In super conditions, the race was surprisingly won in a time of 14:33 by DSD’s Ethiopian runner by origin, Hiko Tonosa, who had come 2nd the previous day on the Greystones track to a British runner in the extremely exciting men’s 5000m A race in a time of 14:09.89. Michael Wycherley may well have got himself a PB in placing 18th in a time of 16:35 and 3rd M40, followed by Tom Dunne (109th in 20:25), whilst Dee Ni Chearbhaill also had a good outing, coming home in 131st place overall, 20th woman and 4th in her O/40 age category, in a time of 21:36. Also, on Sunday, we had a few runners taking part in the myriad events on offer in Limerick. As mentioned above, Karl Walsh ran in the marathon, placing 68th in a field of nearly 600 and a super time of 3:09:20, behind race winners Peter Mooney (2:29) and Shona Keane (3:00). In the half marathon, won again by Peter Somba (1:08), Kieran Little overcame some residual stiffness from his Boston marathon run, to finish in 17th place in a time of 1:18:51. In a field of nearly 2,000 he was followed by Damien Fitzgibbon (115th in 1:32:14), Limerick native Luke Haran (291st in 1:40:40) and James Ryan (302nd in 1:41:03). In the 6 mile race, won inevitably by John Travers (29:40) and Siobhan O’Doherty (35:33), we had two Limerick natives running. Rob Cross ran well to place 7th (2nd O/35) in 33:37 and he was followed by Sarah Cush (220th overall, 40th woman, in 44:03), making a welcome return to road racing. Finally, we had a few runners in in the marathon relay and they all podiumed. James Murphy was a member of a team from Co. Clare that came in 2nd in a time of 2:46, whilst Tony Owens and Joe McDermott also took part in a team on behalf of the Irish Times and came home in 3rd place in 2:56 (Tony running 41 minutes for the 10k leg and Joe running 47 minutes for 13k). Further afield over the weekend, Stephen Moore reported that he ran in the Berlin “Big 25”, a 25k race held in 22 degrees, a temperature which he found extremely challenging. He was able to stay with the lead group through 16k, finally finishing in 1:34 and a likely top-10 finish. Also, Ciaran Diviney and Ciara Lehane, currently on holiday in the Greek islands, reported that they both podiumed in a 10k race on Sifnos. In a field exceeding 370 participants Ciaran finished in 2nd place in a time of 36:45, whilst Ciara came home in 17th spot overall and 2nd woman in a time of 50:53. They both took home a rather large Greek urn, which no home is complete without! As usual, we have a round-up of parkrun results. This weekend we had runners participating in 15 events, aided no doubt by the bank holiday and the glorious sunny conditions. First finisher results went to Niamh Corby, Darina Scully, Catherine Thornton and Lisa Shine, whilst podium places were also recorded by Olwyn Dunne, Kieran Little, Niamh Quinn Diarmuid Byrne and Kris Ryan. The numbers were down this week in Cabinteely after the excitement of Sonia O’Sullivan’s participation last week, but still there was a higher field than usual. Niamh Corby came home in 3rd place overall, first woman finisher, in a time of 20:37. Niamh was followed home by Harp Bhambra (142nd overall, 59th woman, in 45:47). Then, in Knocknacarra, Catherine Thornton, on the back of a busy week, still managed to take 6th place overall, first woman finisher, in a time of 19:48. Darina Scully placed 13th overall, first woman finisher, in River Valley in a time of 23:30, whilst Lisa Shine placed 7th overall, first woman finisher, in Tullow in a time of 23:36. In his warm up for the following day’s Limerick half marathon, Kieran Little placed 2nd in Clarisford in a time of 19:21, whilst Olwyn Dunne placed 12th overall, 2nd woman home, in 24:15 in the second running of a parkrun in Avondale. In Tolka Valley, Diamruid Byrne and Maria Pertl continue to bring their times down. Diarmuid was 3rd in 21:16, whilst Maria was 22nd overall, 7th woman, in 26:59. Kris Ryan also got onto the podium in Coomera, Australia, placing 21st overall in a field of 129 runners, and 3rd woman, in a time of 22:55. We had 8 runners in Poolbeg. Kieran Finucane took 4th spot in 19:33, followed by Russell Murphy (19th in 22:07), Colm Foley (24th in in 22:36) and right behind Colm came Niamh Quinn (25th overall, 2nd woman, in 22:41). Zalan Kovacs was next (28th in 23:26) and Zalan was followed by Fiona Bane (34th overall, 4th woman, in 24:16), Donna Barry (56th overall, 15th woman, in 26:49) and Jennifer Armstrong (82nd overall, 32nd woman, in 29:34). In Malahide, Brian Scanlan took 15th place in 19:14, followed home by Ronan Moynihan (18th in 19:25). We also had two runners in Marlay. Serena Moloney was 55th overall, 5th woman, in 21:40, and Serena was followed by Joanne Carey (102nd overall, 11th woman, in 23:15). We had 3 runners in St. Anne’s. Ger Forde led the charge in 4th place in 18:03 and he was followed by Sarah Lyons (108th overall, 6th woman, in 23:28) and Lorraine Fitzsimons (351st overall, 108th woman, in 31:18). Orlaith de Burca was our lone representative in Shanganagh, placing 47th overall, 6th woman home, in 24:35, whilst Matt Cranley took on Father Collins with his buggy again, finishing in 5th place in 20:22. Another singleton representative for the club was Aoife Quinn who ran in Tramore, placing 75th overall, 22nd woman, in 28:34. BHAA SMS 5k (269) Overall place Name Cat.
