![]() The Dublin senior XC championships were held this year at the Trinity Sports grounds in Santry, a different venue from recent years and with possibly smaller fields than previously. The course was softly undulating without too many challenges, although it was slippery underfoot in places with some severely tight turns. The day brought with it some cool weather, following overnight rainfall, but with little wind. The women’s 6k race was first off and we fielded a team of 4 among the 47 to compete. The race, which started out fast with much of the field holding in a bunch for the first of 4 laps before thinning out, was won in 20:27 by DSD’s Meghan Ryan with a similarly strong finish to the one she showed in Abbotstown a couple of weeks back when she placed just in front of Niamh Allen who was unable to run this time around. It was a good week for Julie McGrath who led our team home, having won a race earlier in the week, taking 20th spot in 22:26. Julie maintained her position throughout the race and she was followed by Maura Mahoney (25th in 23:03) who made her way through the field, reeling in runners ahead who had gone out too fast. Léa Braud, in her first Dublin seniors race, was next, taking 32nd place in 23:32, with our final scorer, Lean Ni Chiobhain, in her first XC race for the club, coming home in 33rd just behind Léa in a time of 23:36. The team acquitted itself well with 5th place on 110 points, just behind Clonliffe on 101 and ahead of Liffey Valley on 118. We had only one competitor in the dramatic men’s 10k with Kieran Little who repeated his strong showing of the recent Novices with a 16th place finish in a field of 65 and a highly respectable time of 33:00, just two minutes behind the winning time of the veteran Sergiu Ciobanu who ran 30:52. Thankfully, Kieran did not have the experience of the 3rd and 4th place finishers (among others) who, for some reason, were not prevented by officials from missing the final turn for the finish and consequently had to scramble over barrier tape to get back onto the course and sprint for home. Video of the finish by Sean Murphy makes for interesting watching! As mentioned, Julie McGrath took part in a race earlier in the week and winning it. This was the Dublin Night Run in Sandymount on Tuesday evening and there were two events, a 5k and a 10k, the latter being 2 loops of the shorter distance. The race took place from and finishing in Sean Moore Park and followed the beach up onto the public pathway alongside the Martello tower on Sandymount Strand. It was, unfortunately, not particularly well-lit and runners had to contend with walkers and dogs, as well as some tight turns in windy conditions and on sludgy wet sand in places. Still, it attracted relatively large fields for the times that we are in. Julie ran in the 5k with 313 other runners, placing 11th over all in 18:52 and she was followed by Luke Davis who took 15th spot in 19:16. Jessica Deely also ran, crossing the line in 22:53, for 52nd place overall and 13th woman home. We had even more runners in the 10k, with our contingent led home by Karl Walsh who ran 39:47 for 16th place in a field of 360 participants. Aine Crotty was next in 53rd place and missing out on 3rd place in the women’s race by 2 seconds on guntime but taking 3rd on chiptime by 1 second. Unfortunately, it’s guntime that counts for prizes. Next came Aine’s fiancé, Cian Coughlan, who placed 56th in 45:29, followed by Andy Deuser (106th in 48:09), Phil Sykes (134th in 49:28) and Georgina Hawkins (144th and 19th in 50:39). We close with the parkrun results, where numbers were generally down this week. Still, we had some decent performances. Peter O’Toole was a first finisher in St. Anne’s where he crossed the line ahead of the 380-strong field in 17:57. A week after his marathon exploits, Paul Kelly also ran there, taking 177th spot in 26:19. Cristian Vilchez Ceballos and Esther Requena Ferri repeated their success of every parkrun they have run in this season, placing first in Father Collins, on this occasion taking significant PBs. Cristian ran 16:42 ahead of 103 other runners, whilst Esther placed 4th overall with a PB of 18:56. Darran Lovely was first across the line in the 2nd edition of the Achill Greenway parkrun with its field of 38. Darran ran 19:41. Whilst Lisa Shine also ran in an event being staged for the 2nd time. Down in Youghal, Co. Cork in the Pobalscoil na Trionoide parkrun with its field of 89, Lisa placed 19th and 3rd in 24:10. Meanwhile, Aine Kenny ran in Strokestown where she placed 6th overall and first woman across the line in a time of 21:07 and a field of 36. Brendan Glynn and Brian Scanlan ran in Portumna, where Brendan finished 3rd in a modest field of 26 and a time of 21:49, whilst Brian ran 22:37 for 5th place. Further afield, Maureen McGinley joined 47 other runners in Amsterdam where she placed 33rd and 10th in a time of 30:12, whilst Kris Ryan ran in Coomera, where, in a field of 111, she took 20th and 4th spots in 24:18. Back home, Karl Walsh placed 5th in Naas, ahead of 132 other runners and in a time of 19:19, whilst Colm Foley ran in Griffeen placing 59th in a field of 185 and in a time of 24:21. In Kilkenny, Mairead Cashman took 95th and 32nd spots in 30:45 amongst a field of 151, whilst Orlaith de Burca joined 191 other runners in Shanganagh where she finished in 133rd and 42nd places in a time of 28:16. Edel Haverty joined the parkrunners this weekend, taking 62nd and 7th places in Marlay Park, in a time of 22:25. The field measured 354 and Edel was joined by Phil Sykes (83rd in 23:23) and Fiona Lane (181st and 27th in 26:18). Olwyn Dunne (80th and 12th in 28:09) and Mairin Shine (109th and 31st in 33:07) joined 137 other runners in Cabinteely, whilst Darina Scully ran with 98 participants in River Valley where she placed 63rd and 16th in 32:02. Cormac McGuire and Maria Perl ran in Tolka Valley with 39 other runners where Cormac placed 12th in 23:46 and Maria placed 30th and 10th in 31:27. Finally, as one might expect, our largest attendance was once again in Poolbeg. We had at least 11 Crusaders take part. They were led home by Cathal O’Hara (8th in 19:48) and Cathal was followed by David Timoney (15th in 20:39), Mark Heaney (32nd in 22:45), Fin Goulding (36th in 23:02), Zlatko Kulic (37th in 23:06), Russell Murphy (45th in 23:45), Sharon Woods (48th and 10th in 23:52), Fiona Bane (57th and 12th in 24:24), Josie Ward right behind (58th and 13th in 24:25), Donna Barry (62nd and 16th in 25:35) and Mari Hansen (113th and 41st in 34:56). The field measured 121 participants. If we have missed any events or results please let us know. Thanks! Dublin Night Run Sandymount 5k (314) Overall place Name Cat.
