Strong performances in the Dublin Novices, with individual and team medals

7/10/2019

’s that time of year again, the start of the cross-country season along with the taper towards the Dublin marathon, and as a club we’re demonstrating what amazing firepower we have. We fielded no less than 23% of the men’s and women’s field in the Dublin Novices XC on Sunday afternoon and were rewarded with individual gold and team bronze in the women’s 4k event and a narrow podium miss with a 4th place team finish in the men’s 6k race.

We start with the women’s 4k, on the usual course near the magazine, where newcomer Clara Costadura ran a super intelligent race to pull away from a trio of DCH runners (among whom was elite track specialist Jodie McCann who came 2nd 11 seconds behind) on the last lap to take gold easily. In breezy but dry conditions on relatively firm ground for most of the course, 3 of our 16 following runners scored in 11th (Julie McGrath) , 24th (Fiona Shine) and 29th (Kathryn Sweeney) places to take team bronze with 65 points, 9 points behind 2nd place Raheny and 7 ahead of 4th place Donore. DCH took team gold with their 4th scorer in 22nd place.  So, we had numerous spoilers, at least 6 of whom  helping to push Liffey Valley in particular back into 6th place as otherwise with 3 scorers in the top 15 they could have been major threat. It was great to see the 17 women battling it out against the 8 other teams in the race, since as we know, every place counts! Kathryn was followed by Maura Mahoney (34th), Maria Kennedy (40th), Lisa Shine (47th), Jemma Lyons (48th), Ciara Lynch (49th), Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos (50th), Rebecca Fleming (55th) Olwyn Dunne (61st), Sharon Woods (62nd), Anna Shine (65th), Tanja Narancic in her first XC (67th), Gillian Archbold (70th) and Maureen McGinley (71st).

The men’s 6k race was an even bigger affair with 112 participants, involving 12 club teams.  We fielded a team of 25 and although we were unlucky not to podium, losing out by only 10 points to 3rd place Clonliffe we were well ahead of Sportsworld in 5th. Indeed, if our 5th through 8th runners had been a separate team they would have placed 8th, with our 9th through 12th athletes placing 10th, such was the depth of our squad. The men were led home by Stephen Hurley (14th), followed by newcomer Brian Hyland (16th), Dee Lawlor (20th), Frank Halligan, fresh from his marathon success in Berlin 7 days earlier (26th), just in front of Michael Wycherley (27th), then Paul Reidy (34th), Frank Hague (44th), Peter Barry (in marathon training) (48th), Garret Dunne (49th), John McAuley (50th), newcomer Christian Vichez Ceballos (55th), Eddie Nugent (71st), Michael Maughan (72nd), Tom Bradley (74th), Zlatko Kulic (77th), Sebastien Le Roy (79th), Thomas Martini (98th), just ahead of Patrick Needham (99th), Conor Parle, another Berlin marathoner (102nd), Brendan Glynn (104th), Dave Tilly (106th), Neil Brown (110th), Aitor Arribas Velsaco (111th) and Daniel Cullen (112th).

Elsewhere over the weekend we had runners mostly preparing for the marathon with some ¾ and half marathon runs. Aine Kenny headed off to Tarmonbarry in Co. Roscommon where in a field of 159 she ran at a training pace and actually placed 31st overall, 2nd woman home, in a time of 2:29:13. She will have gained enormous confidence from that. Meanwhile, in Longwood, Co. Meath, we had 5 runners in the Irish ¾ marathon there, led home by Brendan Murphy who placed 8th in a field of 1,424 runners and a time of 1:55. Next across the line for the club was John Lohan (202nd in 2:36) who accompanied Aoife Clarke who decided she only wanted to run 2/3 of the race as part of her training.  John was followed by Billy Kelly (254th in 2:39) and then Carina Davidson was next (634th overall in 3:03), followed by Tara Murphy (727th overall in 3:06).

We had two runners in the Galway Bay Half. Tomas O’Dowd placed 12th in a field of 1,132 and a time of 1:20:27, followed by Maurice Kelter who was running under someone else’s name and discarded his bib before the end, running a time of sub 1:27. Again, everyone was using these events as trsaining runs before the Dublin marathon in 3 weeks’ time.

The most extraordinary performance of the week by the clearest of margins was that of our exile in Australia, Kris Ryan. She entered the Adelaide6 Day race, which involved running continuously for 6 days round a 1.5km loop (on concrete!).  The winner was the runner who had covered the greatest distance in that time. There were 24 participants in the race with a broad age spectrum (including runners over 70) and Kris distinguished herself, firstly for completing the challenge in which she clocked up over 680km (446 laps!), placing 4th overall and 2nd woman across the line. Quite a feat!

We had several first finishers on Saturday morning in the parkruns. Fiona Bane was one of those, in Corkagh where she finished 19th overall in 23:02. Members may not be aware that we have two athletes by the name of Kate Murray, so it gets a bit confusing sometimes. Anyway Kate major (in English boarding school parlance (or senior)) was first finisher in Lough Key where she ran 23:58 for 15th place overall. Dave Carter was another, where he led the field home in Cabinteely in a time of 19:30, as did Joe Walsh, another Berlin marathoner, who ran 19:11 in Brickfields.  A podium place went to Kenan Furlong who finished in 3rd spot in Poolbeg in 19:15, ahead of David O’Donnell (17th in 21:41), Thomas Martini (27th in 23:00), Sharon Woods (46th and 8th in 24:14), Paul Campbell (51st in 24:25), John Lohan (56th in 24:55), Gillian Curran (63rd and 16th in 25:55), Mari Hansen (72nd and 21st in 27:08), Tara Murphy (75th and 24th in 27:17), Killian Stokes (76th in 27:30) and Karla Woods (104th and 38th in 30:14). Tim O’Donnell picked up 4th spot in Clonakilty where he ran 20:55, whilst Ronan Moynihan placed 7th in 18:58 in Malahide. Colm Foley crossed the line in Griffeen Park in 30th place in a time of 23:09, whilst Cathal Murphy ran in Kilkenny where he finished in 105th place in 27:59. In St. Anne’s Emer Kenny took it easy and placed 243rd overall and 66th female finisher in 29:21, whilst Neil Brown prepared for his XC exploits the following day by running in Shanganagh where he placed 74th in 29:13. Brian Carroll came home in 19:39 for 5th place in Ballincollig, followed by Mairead Cashman who placed 151st and 32nd in 27:21. Paul F. Kelly ran in Fairview where he placed 64th in 30:00, whilst Brian Scanlan finished in 9th place in River Valley in a time of 21:56. Brian was followed by Darina Scully (28th and 4th in 25:47), Diarmuid Byrne (51st in 29:05) and Maria Pertl (53rd and 15th in 29:15). Finally, Dave Carter was joined in Cabinteely by runners celebrating Mairin Shine’s 150th parkrun. The first of these was Orlaith de Burca who placed 98th and 31st in 30:08, followed by Maureen McGinley (99th and 32nd in 30:17) and Mia Shine (146th and 58th in 36:10). Lisa, Mairin, Anna and Fiona Shine then tailwalked the event.
