We had several athletes participating in the Irish universities Indoor track and field championships on Friday and there were a few standout performances. The principal one came from Andrew Mellon who set a record for his alma mater Queen’s University Belfast in the final of the 400m, with a win in 47.70, having run 48.97 in qualifying. Shane Keane took silver in the long jump with a leap of 6.61m, whilst James Kelly also took 2nd place in the shot put with a throw of 14.35m. Nick Ennis also competed in the 2nd heat of the 200m and, despite a 2nd place in 22.91 in lane 3, he was unable to progress. A couple of our clubmates took part in the national 50k championships in Donadea on Saturday, and a race where Gary O’Hanlon once again set a national record in an amazing time of 2:40:46. Andrew Kinneen, who is training for the Rotterdam marathon in early April and will be delighted by his run, took 36th place in a field of 185, in a time of 4:12:46 (equivalent to a close to 3:30 marathon effort), whilst Donatas Jocius came home in 75th place in a time of 4:32:58. The race involved 10 laps of a 5k forested course. largely flat, but with a hill towards the end of each lap. Kate Murray reports that 140 women turned out for the 2nd of 3 races in the Meet and Train cross country league on Sunday in Cherryfield, hosted by Bros Pearce AC. In cold but sunny conditions, with some nice mucky spots from recent rain and a bit of wind, 16 Crusaders women competed in the 3.5k race on a relatively flat course (but with a couple of tricky hills) that is also used by the BHAA. The A team was led home again by Grainne Regan in a fantastic 4th place finish in 14:26. Grainne was followed by Fiona Shine (having been undeterred by an earlier stand-off with a "rabid" (!) dog!). After a sprint finish with 2 other athletes, she finished 7th in 14:37. Fiona was followed by Sarah Lyons in an excellent finish to place 9th (14:46), Ciara Lynch in her 2nd cross country race (15th in 15:00), Kate Murray (17th in 15:11) who crossed the finish line with Emer Kenny (18th in 15:11), Geraldine Clements getting the better of her rival from the last race in a great sprint finish to take 29th (15:31), Lisa Shine coming back to form (41st in 15:56), Carina Davidson (53rd in 16:16), Olwyn Dunne who is tapering for the marathon in the sun (Seville) next Sunday (57th in 16:16), another Spring marathoner Maria del Carmen Jimenez Campos (68th in 16:41), Anna Shine (75th in 16:53), Orlaith de Burca (88th in 17.32), Michelle Geoghegan (116th in 18:29), Aisling Dilworth (118th in 18:42) and Maureen McGinley (121st in 18:48). After the first race the A team of Grainne, Fiona, Sarah, Kate, Emer and Dorothy Maguire were sitting in 3rd place closely behind Bros Pearce. After 2 races, in the A division Crusaders A team now lie in 2nd place on 114 points behind Sportsworld A team (on 94 points) with Dunboyne A team in 3rd (on 141 points). Crusaders B lie in 2nd place in the B division with 398 points behind Esker B (on 313 points). Crusaders C, meanwhile, continue to lead the C division on 658 points with their nearest rivals, Bros Pearce C, on 690 points. It is all to play for in the 3rd and final race of the league on Sunday 3rd March in Abbottstown! Leo Lundy reports that he “hobbled” around a marathon in and around Fore Abbey in Co. Westmeath over the weekend. Meanwhile, Kris Ryan won the 12-hour dawn to dusk event at Caboolture in Queensland after winning the 24-hour event at the same venue last year. There was a much larger than usual turnout in the parkruns on Saturdays and again we list those who managed podium places first.
