On Bank Holiday Monday, Adam McMullen represented Ireland in the European Athletics Championships in Berlin. Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, our national champion in the long jump failed to progress through the heats as he finished in 25th place with a best leap of 7.47m, needing to jump further than 7.70m to go through to the final. In fact, Adam jumped 7.47m twice in 3 jumps, with the other being red flagged. Despite it being quite a challenging 10K with significant climbs in the first half and a steep descent in the second, playing havoc with the quads, the DLR Bay 10k seems to go from strength to strength and this year, its 7th running, also on Bank Holiday Monday, saw a finishing field in excess of 1,200 runners. We had at least 13 runners in the race. But more of that later. We go back now to last Wednesday’s 8th Dublin Athletics’ graded meet, this time in the Morton Stadium in Santry and the last of the season. On a windy evening, we had athletes taking part in the 400m and 3000m as well as the mile. In the men’s 400m 2nd race of grade A, Kevin Woods took 3rd place in 52:51, whilst in the C grade race of the same distance John O’Loughlin placed 3rd in 59:84, followed by Frank Halligan in 6th (63:70), one of 3 events he ran in on the night. In the Mile, Garret Dunne took the win in the B race in 4:48.62, followed closely by Michael O’Conor in 2nd place (4:49.85). Frank took on the C grade mile, placing 2nd in 5:05.48, followed by John McAuley in 5th (5:14.14) and Joe McDermott (6th in 5:16.12). We had 3 contestants in the D grade, with newcomer John Healy placing 3rd in 5:20.61, followed by Denis Murphy (6th in 5:46.95) and Paul Kelly (11th in 7:52.27). Finally, Frank took on the 3000m, placing 3rd in 9:55.27. Finally, Frank took on the 3000m, placing 3rd in 9:55.27. On the mountains in the middle of last week, we had a couple of runners in a 9.6km IMRA race in Downshill townland near Delgany in Wicklow. On easy terrain with a 400m climb, Gavan Doherty placed 49th in a field of 158 in a time of 51:06, followed by Berndt Heim (135th in 65:48). On the roads last week, Denis Murphy took part in a 10k in Letterkenny (the Point) in Co. Donegal and in a field of 124, Denis placed 15th and 2nd M50 in a time of 44:57. Neil Brown was our only participant on Sunday in the Indaver 10K (Duleek and district). Neil ran 54:50 for a placing of 141st out of a field of 247. We now come to the DLR Bay 10k which took place on bank holiday Monday in cloudy, windy but warm conditions. The race would not normally be associated with PBs because of its challenges. However, we saw at least one amongst our number. Frank Hague was our lead runner, taking 14th spot in 35:36, followed by Derek Lawlor who came home in 19th in a PB time of 36:29 after a ding dong battle with a Raheny athlete. Our next runner was Damien Fitzgibbon in 49th (40:23) just ahead of Kiera Roche who came home in 50th place overall, 3rd woman finisher behind Michelle Cox and Sarah Baryga who were only 2 seconds apart (38:18 and 38:20). Kiera’s time was 40:25. Luke Davis was also not much further back in 52nd place (40:33). In 76th place came Luke Haran (42:00) and was followed by Tom Dunne (42:24). David long, just getting back, was next in 43:11, followed by Stephen Mulligan (136th in 44:22). In a race he might well have otherwise podiumed in, Kieran Little ran 44:51 to place 148th, pacing a friend to a sub 45 minutes finish. Joe Dunne ran a super 46:15 (192nd), followed by his wife, Olwyn, in 47:27 (234th overall and 24th woman home) and the younger of our two athletes named John Fitzsimons (801st in 59:01). Leo Lundy completed a milestone marathon over the weekend, his 250th. Leo’s race took place in Surrey in England, called the Dark Phoenix and he finished in mid-pack in 6:01:27 in extremely hot conditions (30 degrees plus). As usual, there were some excellent performances in Saturday morning’s parkruns. First finisher places went to Adrienne Jordan in St. Anne’s where she finished 8th overall in a time of 18:33. Lorraine Fitzsimons also ran in the event coming home in 259th overall (77th woman) in 29:49. Derek Lawlor was also a first finisher, in Cabinteely, running 18:30, whilst the feat was emulated in Knocknacarra by both Laura Flannelly (10th overall in 21:40) and by husband Brian (18:41). Gavan Doherty also ran in Cabinteely, placing 6th in 20:36. A podium place went to Aoife Quinn in Fairview, her time of 24:56 good enough to place her 3rd woman, 19th overall. Aoife was joined by Olwyn Dunne who placed not too far behind, 21st overall, 4th woman, in 25:21. Kate Murray ran an excellent 21:59 to take 2nd spot in Marlay (52nd overall), whilst Kris Ryan placed 4th (22nd overall) among the 103 participants in Coomera, Australia. Matt Cranley pushed his buggy round Father Collins to place 5th in 19:48, whilst Tim O’Donnell led a large contingent from the club across the line in Poolbeg in 20:01 to place 6th.Tim was followed by Zalan Kovacs (26th in 22:46), Fiona Bane, 3rd woman (30th overall) in 23:26, Sharon Woods, 5th woman (34th overall) in 23:38, Cliodhna O’Reilly (51st overall, 13th woman, in 25:32), Jennifer Armstrong (80th overall, 26th woman, in 30:33), Don Anderton (86th in 32:42) and Ali May Hannigan (95th overall, 38th woman, in 36:03). We had another athlete take part in the Greenpoint parkrun in South Africa, after Kieran Little a couple of weeks back. Darina Scully joined 717 other runners, placing 103rd overall, 13th woman, in 24:27. Up in Belfast Mairin Shine ran in Ormeau Park, placing 281st overall (112th woman) in 34:25, whilst daughter Lisa took a break from the watching women’s hockey in east London, by running in Panshanger and finishing 127th overall, 24th woman, in 28:24 among a field of 278. Orlaith de Burca took 89th spot overall (18th woman) in 27:11 in Shanganagh, whilst Mairead Cashman headed down to Glengarriff in Cork, placing 63rd overall, 22nd woman, in 31:54. Finally, partners Maria Pertl and Diarmuid Byrne ran together in Griffeen Park. Maria came home in 69th overall (11th woman) in 25:38, followed by Diarmuid (70th in 25:40).
