Members of the club enjoyed a wonderful 80th anniversary celebration on Saturday night at the Hilton Hotel where there were great speeches, great video footage, great food and even greater company. For some the celebrations went on into the small hours, but we still managed to get our long runs in the following morning!
The week saw some racing too. It started on Tuesday evening, with a few testing 800m and 3k time trials for members of the club on the track followed by ad hoc relay racing. By all accounts it was a fun evening, followed by cake to celebrate coach Susan Walsh’s milestone birthday. On the same evening we had a few runners take part in the BHAA OPW 5k trail race that was staged on a familiar looped course near the cricket pitches in the Phoenix Park. The race attracted 140 runners, among them Daniel Lowe, who took 2nd place in the event in a time of 17:59. Daniel was followed by Ollie McGrath (17th and 4th M45 in 20:01), Robbie Moore (63rd in 23:05) and Kate Murray (67th overall and 13th female finisher and 4th F45). In the same park on Friday evening we had several clubmates take part in the Dublin Pride 5k that used the same grass and cycle paths around the Acres as we train on every Saturday morning. There were two laps of the 2.5k loop familiar to many of us. 759 runners contested the event and our best placing was achieved by Amy McGuinness who finished on the women’s podium in 2nd place (34th overall) in a time of 20:34. Slightly ahead of Amy came David McEvoy (23rd in 20:11) and they were both followed by Dee Ni Chearbhaill (56th and 5th in 21:26), Patrick Needham (65th in 21:43) and Marta Imaz (201st and 23rd in 23:59). On Saturday evening, 827 runners took part in the Dunshaughlin 10k, one of the races in the KIA series. It is well known to be a fast one loop course and this year’s edition did not disappoint with a strong run in a quality field from Efrem Gidey and behind him Hiko Tonosa. It was also good to see Fionnuala McCormack back road racing with a win in the women’s race, ahead of Lizzie Lee and a quality women's field. Brendan Murphy had an excellent run to place 36th overall in a time of 32:39 and he was followed by Paul Cowhie, unsurprisingly winning the M55 category in a time of 35:11 and placing 92nd overall. John McAuley was not too far back in 115th place, also in a super time of 35:35. On Sunday, as with the Dunshaughlin 10k, we saw the return., after the now all too familiar two-year gap, of the first race in the Dublin Marathon Race Series. This year’s edition was held in Tallaght and the race saw a participation of some 1,322 competitors. We had at least 7 runners in the event, at least one of them having celebrated with us the night before. Yvonne Macauley, in only her first race since becoming a mum, took 3rd place in the women's race and 40th place overall in a great time of 30:35. Karl Walsh was next in 69th place in 31:40. Robbie Moore, who’d run in the BHAA race earlier last week, was our third runner home in 291st place and a time of 36:56. Robbie was followed by Dave Tuohy (415th in 39:02), Tim Purdy (535th in 39:23), Kevin Kenny (612th in 42:21) and Lorraine Fitzsimons (1,169th and 398th in 53:28). The race was conducted on a one-loop anti-clockwise course that started and finished in Tallaght Stadium and, at its furthest point, went beyond Killinarden Park. Also, on Sunday, Ger Forde took part in the Thoroughbred 10k, a clockwise relatively flat race through the town of Kildare. In a field of 255, Ger took 2nd place in an excellent time of 34:38. Down in Kerry, Maurice Kelter took on the Tralee 100k which he covered in 11:43:40, placing 9th out of 20 runners in total, and with such a small field it was a singularly lonely affair. Further afield, Áine Kenny travelled to Tromso in Norway to take part in the Midnight Sun Marathon on her birthday on Saturday night. It’s a race that starts at 20:30 and the goal is to try and finish it on the same day, which Áine did, with time to spare, recording a super time of 3:14. This was no mean feat in windy conditions and the race requires runners to go twice over a bridge high enough to accommodate ocean-going ships (a climb of some 35m), as well as having to negotiate a few nasty hills towards the end. In Spain, our Spanish exile Esther Requena Ferri contested a 13k event where she placed 3rd overall in the women’s race in a time of just over an hour. Up in the mountains midweek, IMRA staged a race to the summit and back of Brockagh Mountain in Co. Wicklow. The race was an event in the Leinster League conducted on moderate terrain over 11k. the clockwise route via Brockagh Forest involved a climb of 443m. Warren Swords was our first runner across the line in 3rd place and a time of 52:44 and he was followed home by the winner of the women’s race, Becky Quinn, who placed 14th overall in a time of 59:56. Next came Brian McGuckin (33rd in 64:32) and he was followed home by Gavan Doherty (55th in 71:41). The race enjoyed a field of 122 runners. As usual, we had a good share of first finishers and podium places in the parkruns this weekend. Kathryn Sweeney ran in her home town parkrun in Omagh, where, in a field of 66, she placed 2nd overall in 19:26. Another first finisher was Kevin Fitzgibbon in St. Anne’s, just ahead of Toby Benham who placed 2nd. Kevin ran 16:44 and Toby, 16:48. In a field of 286, Kieran Martin was next, in 11th place with a time of 19:31 and he was followed by Mary Brennan (131st and 28th in 26:16) and Tim Hyland (144th in 27:33). Louise Dobbyn was another woman first across the line. In Cabinteely, she placed 15th overall in a field of 124 and she was followed by Joe Dunne (36th in 25:18), Olwyn Dunne (37th and 6th in 25:24), Tanja Narancic (62nd and 12th in 27:49) and Miriam Logan (63rd and 13th in the same time). Karl Walsh ran in Naas where he led the field of 85 home in a time of 18:04, whilst Stephen Hurley did the same in Poolbeg. Stephen’s time was 17:23, with Kenan Furlong back in 3rd place in a time of 17:51. We had 6 other runners in the field of 121. Neil Monahan was next in 8th place in 20:05, and he was followed across the line by Paul Campbell (19th in 21:55), Stephen Mulligan (27th in 23:03), Josie Ward (30th and 3rd in 23:49), Tony Hackett (37th in 24:30) and Kate Healy (82nd and 27th in 29:26). Lisa Shine placed 4th and 2nd in the Mountlucas Parkrun in Ballycon, Co. Offaly. In a field of 31, Lisa was followed by Mairin Shine (15th and 8th in 27:37). Tara Murphy found a parkrun in the US. In the Delaware and Raritan Canal parkrun just southwest of Manhattan, Tara placed 10th and 2nd in 25:19 in a field of 40. Meanwhile, Tara’s partner, John Lohan, ran 21:05 to place 17th in a field of 150 in Griffeen Park. Jill Nason ran in Shanganagh where she placed 87th and 22nd in 26:38 in a field of 164, whilst Darina Scully ran 28:55 for 47th and 12th in a field of 102 in River Valley. Finally, Kate Murray placed 52nd and 10th in 24:47 in a field of 201 in Bushy Park, whilst, Deirdre Kennedy placed 125th and 38th in 38:15 in a field of 197 in Malahide.
