The major event of the weekend for the club was the IMC meet at the Le Cheile track in Leixlip on Saturday afternoon. We had several of our members compete, and compete well, and the following are the results that apply to them.  Shane Keane ran in the B grade of both the 100 and 200 metres, placing 2nd in the 100m in 10.77 and winning the 200m in 21.99.  Valentinos Goularas also took part in the 100m where he took 5th spot in 11.05. Alix Hughes also competed in two events. In the Long Jump she placed 2nd with a leap of 4.69m and then went on to win the 200m B standard race in 27.55. In the men’s 800m B Fearghal O’Hare took 3rd place in 1:55.52, whilst in the strong women’s A field of international quality Niamh Allen placed 8th in 2:14.63. Katie Rogers and Fiona Shine took on the 800m women’s B standard race, with Katie crossing the line in 4th in a time of 2:22.15, followed by Fiona in 9th place, in 2:28.30. The race was notable for having been won by Anne Gilshinan of Slaney Olympic in a new world record time for an O/55 in 2:19.63 (her 2nd WR in as many meets). Michael O’Conor continued to participate in 1500m races, placing 9th in the mixed standard 1500m in 4:12.69, whilst Michael Kiely ran in the A standard 3,000m, finishing 14th in a time of 9:01.02. Finally, Joe McDermott was only a couple of seconds off a PB in the men’s 3,000m B race, where he finished 4th in 9:48.73. Results can be found here: https://www.irishmilersclub.org/results-page.

Pablo Sanchez, our Spanish exile in Spain, reported that he became 1500m senior champion of Madrid over the weekend by running  a time of 4:16.26, whilst Andrew Mellon became Northern Ireland senior champion in the 400m, winning in a time of 47.94.

Dee Ni Chearbhaill and husband Sean Murphy, who trains with us, headed down to Kilmacow in Co. Kilkenny for the annual running of the 4 mile Little South Run. There may not have been any chip timing but, in a race won by Mick Clohisey in a time of 19:10, Dee ran 28:33 and Sean ran 23:34, both winning their respective age categories. Meanwhile, Leo Lundy reported that he took part in his 92nd ultra marathon over the weekend. This race was held on the Thames towpath near Henley and Leo finished 4th male.

In the mountains midweek, we had a few of our clubmates take part in a race on Prince William’s Seat in the Wicklow Mountains. On a course with a climb of 364m over 8.4km on moderately difficult terrain, the race involved 174 runners. John McAuley led our contingent home in 41:35, followed by Brian McGuckin (28th and 6th M50 in 45:13), Anthony O’Reilly (37th in 46:05), Gavan Doherty (51st in 47:24) and Berndt Heim.
We had at least one first finisher on Saturday in the parkruns. Catherine Thornton placed 8th overall in coming home in 1st place in a time of 19:58 in Knocknacarra in Galway. Meanwhile, there was a podium place for Frank Hague (2nd) in Porterstown where he ran 17:53. Kate Murray also placed 2nd (20th overall) in 23:40 in Lough Key, whilst Anthony Owens came home in 3rd place in 21:58 in Fairview. There were also 3rd place finishes for Lisa Shine in Corkagh (27th overall in 23:20), where she also ran with Mairin Shine (164th and 80th in 37:00) and for Brian Scanlan who ran in Carlow in a time of 20:46.

Our best place finish in the huge contingent we had in Poolbeg, was Fiona Bane who placed 3rd (37th overall) in 22:52. Otherwise, the group was led home by Kenan Furlong who took 6th place in 18:58. Kenan was followed by David Timoney (8th in 19:36), Tim O’Donnell (10th in 20:17), Zlatko Kulic (16th in 20:56), Paul Fox (22nd in 21:33), Russell Murphy (36th in 22:49), Ali May Hann (58th and 11th in 24:09), Kate Healy (73rd and 17th in 25:11), Aisling O’Connor (81st and 22nd in 25:48), Cliodhna O’Reilly (86th and 25th in 26:20), Killian Stokes (94th in 27:08), Maureen McGinley (106th and 34th in 28:18), Mari Hansen (125th and 42nd in 29:56) and Iseult Ni Chuinneagain who provided the services of tailwalking. Ronan Moynihan ran in Malahide, where he placed 6th in 18:28, whilst Barry O’Neill ran in Naas, finishing in 25th place in a time of 21:52.
