It’s been an action packed period since the last report. Two weekends ago we had two runners, stars of the gold-medal winning team of the women’s Dublin seniors, competing in the National Senior XC on the purpose-built course at the National Sports Campus in Abbottstown. In an extremely competitive field of more than 100 female athletes, Niamh Allen and Anna Reddin ran steadily and strongly to take 23rd and 30th places, in respectively 29:39 and 30:19, behind race winner Ciara Mageean (28:01) over 8k. The same day saw the start of the 4-race series of the International Running Challenge, involving back-to-back races contested between clubs from Ireland, the UK, Germany, Denmark and Holland on different surfaces and over different lengths and topography over 4 days. Nearly 40 Crusaders made the trip this year to Club La Santa on the island of Lanzarote, not all to run in the Challenge, but all enjoyed the fantastic weather where the sun shone every day, the wind was mercifully just a gentle breeze and where racing temperatures reached 22 degrees. What more could one ask for at the end of November! The day before the first race, a theoretical 10k run on road, but starting and finishing on the track, we were inspired by the sight of the Belgian 4x400 relay team being put through their paces whilst doing some warm weather training on the track. What was really surprising for those of us watching is that there is a 4th Borlee brother being groomed for stardom (18 years old) in addition to the 3 that have already medalled for their country at international level and it is the goal of their father who is also their coach to have the entire team made up from the same family in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. It will be amazing if his sons achieve that ambition for him. Anyway, back to the Challenge. It needs to be noted that all the distances are approximate and each year a race can measure either too long or too short so any 10k or 5k PBs achieved there can be questioned. We had 12 men and 7 women in the first race, and although we all ran together our results were recorded separately by gender so that, in the women’s race of 153 runners, Orla Drumm came 2nd behind a Spanish woman who only ran in the one race. Orla would not be beaten again in any of the remaining races. Catherine Thornton took 11th, followed by Irene Gorman, just back from injury, in 17th, Grainne Regan, 25th, Emer Kenny 26th just behind, Dee Ni Chearbhaill in 40th and Olwyn Dunne, 44th. Lydia Bigley of the Front Runners who trains with us also ran, placing 55th. The women were beginning to show strong positions in their age categories as well as in the team event. In the men’s side of the race, Ger Forde came home in 10th out of a field of 217, followed by Joe McDermott (17th), Dominick Branigan (23rd), Joe Walsh (29th), Mick Smyth (30th) who was treated for dehydration at the finish, Will Owens (41st), Enda Currid (46th), James Cottle (51st), Eddie Nugent (54th), Tim O’Donnell (84th), Philip Matthews (92nd) and Brendan Glynn (141st). The 3 men’s teams were not as well placed as the women who were lying first, but were holding their own mid-table ,with 4th place being our best position. Declan Ryan, a visually impaired athlete from Thurles who trains with us, also ran in this race, taking 47th place. The following day saw us all out again early running on a course known as the 13k ridge run, involving a steep trek over a mix of road and trail from sea level to the top of an extinct volcano and then down again in a wide loop on sandy and earthy trails to a track finish inside the CLS stadium. That race still had sizeable fields of 198 men and 153 women. The women’s team continued to consolidate a strong lead led home by Orla in 1st place and Orla was followed by strong runs from Catherine (6th) and Irene (13th), together with Grainne (25th) and Olwyn (50th) who had a nasty fall on the volcanic trail just before entering the stadium at the finish. Lorraine Healy from Tipperary who trains with us took 27th place and Lydia ran as well (62nd). We had 10 men in the race, headed again by Ger (8th) and followed by Joe McDermott (21st), Joe Walsh (23rd), Will (29th), Dominick (30th), Enda (39th), James (48th), Mick feeling the effects of his possible heatstroke of the day before (65th), Tim (87th) and Philip (106th). Again, the men’s teams were not doing too badly in mid table (5th, 8th and 13th). The third race involved being bussed to Playa del Carmen in the south of the island, a trip of some 30 minutes or so. Every year the conditions for the 5k beach race seem to change. We had some decent hard sand in places, but the start of the race was extremely soft going (think of the consistency of dunes!), along with similar conditions at the far end of the 2.5k loop. Some runners just don’t fare well on such surfaces, whilst those of us with short strides and high cadence perhaps seem to thrive. It was also a bit windier at the seaside than in the north at CLS. Again, Orla demonstrated her dominance (this on perhaps 3 hours of sleep after a long warm up on the dance floor the night before!) by winning the race. Catherine took 7th, Irene, 14th, Grainne 22nd and Olwyn 69th, feeling the effects of her bloodied fall of the day before. Once again Ger was our first man home (12th) followed by Joe McDermott (26th), Joe Walsh (28th), Will (35th), Enda (40th), James (44th), Mick (47Th), Eddie (50th), Tim (83rd) and Philip (109th). Dominick had unfortunately to sit out this race as he was experiencing flu-like symptoms, which thankfully didn't last. The largest field of the week (nearly 330 combined: 192 men and 134 women) appeared for the 4th race, the so called half marathon which is really 20k on a point to point course (having been bussed to the start). Several of us had a lot at stake going into this race, where the times of each of the races are aggregated and the lowest accumulated time in each age category takes the prize in a winner takes all situation: nothing for 2nd or 3rd places, just bragging rights. So after 3 races, Orla was leading the women’s field by about 2 mins, Irene was leading her age category by 3 mins; Catherine was also ahead in her age category by just over 1 minute, whilst Ger was lying in 4th place, 5 minutes behind the leader of his category. James was lying joint first in his age category on an identical accumulated time with a Danish runner, having surprisingly recovered an exact deficit of 25 seconds on him in the beach race. As everyone in the Challenge knows, a deficit of 1-3 minutes can easily be overcome and so the last race is critical. We ran the race, which was held on a mixture of muddy trail and road in extremely warm conditions again and yet again Orla demonstrated her experience and skill in holding off her competitors to win the women’s race. Catherine (9th) and Irene (13th) did likewise and duly won their age categories by finishing ahead of their competition. The women’s dominance of the race led to them winning the team title again. Ger’s 9th place in the men’s race kept him in 4th place but with the narrowest of margins behind 3rd place, whilst James got tired of hanging onto his competitor after 3km and decided to try and put distance between himself and the Dane. If the race had been 14k the tactic might have worked. Unfortunately, James was inevitably caught and eventually finished up about 3 minutes behind the age category winner in 2nd place overall. It was a good lesson in race tactics! For the record Grainne finished 24th in the race, followed by Olwyn in 54th place and Lydia in 58th. Rob Cross finished behind Ger in 15th place, followed by Joe McDermott in 20th, Joe Walsh (24th), Dominick (34th), Enda (35th ), Will (43rd), Mick (55th), James (56th), Eddie (61st), Tim (100th) and Philip (115th). It was a great experience as usual and a super confidence boost for those who did not appreciate they might have such endurance to master 4 consecutive days of tough racing in warm conditions. The day following the return of most of the participants coincided with the Donore-organised Jingle Bells 5k in the Phoenix Park. The race is essentially a marginally net downhill and so is famous for producing PBs. More importantly, for those at the front, it can also serve as a qualifying race for the Armagh International 5k where in order to be eligible a male runner needs to demonstrate that he has run the distance under 16 minutes. Indeed anyone finishing the race over 15 minutes is likely to be close to the back of the field in Armagh. One of those seeking a qualifying time was Kieran Little who led our 50 or so participants home on the day from the starting point on Acres Road, up Chesterfield Avenue to the roundabout before Castleknock Gate and then down the Ordnance Survey Road and the Upper Glen to the finish just below the hospital near the Chapelizod Gate. Kieran’s 14th place in a field of nearly 1200 and his PB time of 15:29 will have been enough to secure him a place in Armagh, as will those of Brian O’Kelly (back from injury and placing 15th in an identical time and finishing 2nd M35), Michael Kiely (22nd in 15:42) and Fearghal O’Hare (27th in 15:53). There were too many of our runners in the race to cover everyone, their results are outlined below, but a few should be mentioned. We had 15 male runners in the top 100, including Italo Giancaterina (36th in 16:06), Ciaran Diviney (37th and 1st M45 in 16:07), Frank Halligan (46th in 16:21), Stephen Hurley (54th in 16:27), Vinnie Mcguinness (55th in 16:31), Rob Cross (60th and 2nd M45 in 16:36), Adam Flanagan (70th in 16:48), Tony Carter (77th in 16:54), Stephen O’Kennedy (84th in 17:08) and Jason Kehoe (96th in 16:54). Special mention should be made of David Long who placed 186th and 8th M55 in 18:54, whilst Michael Maughan’s 252nd place in 19:30 hides the fact that several runners were unaware the race had started and had to play catch up. Tim O’Donnell ran his 5th race of the week in placing 257th in a time of 20:01. The Cru women did well too. Jane Wallace was first home in 208th place overall (28th woman) in a super PB time of 19:02. Katie McElroy also recorded a PB in placing 253rd overall, 40th woman, in 19:44, breaking 20 minutes for the first time. Other top 100 or so places included, Serena Moloney (304th overall, 54th woman, in 20:31), Ruth Dwyer (338th overall, 64th woman, in 21:17), Kate Murray (372nd overall, 77th woman, 5th F50, in 21:36), Sarah Lyons (376th overall, 79th woman, in 21:120, Maria Kennedy (406th overall, 94th woman, in 21:54) and Maeve Muldowney (425th overall, 101st woman, in 22:14). Also on Saturday morning, Brendan Murphy ran in the Waterford Half marathon, placing 8th in a field of nearly 2,350 and a great time of 1:12:21, and we should not forget to mention that Pat Quill ran the week before in the Seattle marathon, finishing in 3:28 on a hilly course. That takes us to Sunday afternoon and the running of the Dublin Intermediates XC in Tymon Park on a course designed and hosted by Rathfarnham. Among intermittent rain showers there were two races of interest to Crusaders. In the women’s 60-strong 5k race we fielded a team of 8 runners, with at least 3 newcomers to the club and indeed to cross-country. The race involved one lap of 1km, followed by 2 laps of 2km on an undulating course. One of the newcomers, Katie Rogers, recorded a top 10 finish, placing an excellent 10th, followed by Rachael Yorke (16th), Isabelle Cairns, another new recruit (34th), Kathryn Sweeney (38th), Fiona Shine (40th), Kate Murray (44th), Dorothy Maguire, likewise new to the club (46th) and Mairead Cashman (60th). The team earned a creditable 4th place out of the 8 clubs represented. In the men’s 4-lap 8k race, we fielded the barest minimum to have a team of 4 runners, so that they all scored. Shane Collins made a welcome temporary return from self-imposed exile in Cork to lead the men’s team home into 7th place with a 12th place individual finish in a field of 93. Peter O’Toole was next in 13th, followed by the stalwart Joe McDermott (27th) and Kevin D’Arcy (68th). Finally, we have two weeks of parkrun results recorded below. Highlights are as follows. Two weekends ago we had an impressive podium result in Poolbeg with Stephen Hurley placing 1st in 17:12 followed by Dee Lawlor in 2nd on 17:45. Meanwhile, Katie Rogers placed first woman finisher (25th overall) in 21:12. Ali May Hann was 3rd woman (17th overall) in 25:14 in Monaghan Town, whilst Sarah Lyons placed 2nd (14th overall) in a time of 21:59 in Poppintree, with Phelim Murray in 5th in 20:03. In Marlay, John McAuley was back from injury running 18:22 for a 5th placed finish too, whilst Diarmuid Byrne ran in Dungloe, taking 2nd place in 20:11. Then this past weekend, John ran marginally slower (18:27) to record a 4th place finish in Marlay, whilst Padraig Sheehan did likewise in St. Anne’s in a time of 17:58. Ali May also maintained an excellent record by taking 2nd place (23rd overall) in a time of 24:19 in Oldbridge. Diarmuid was another to repeat success by placing 3rd in Poppintree in 19:12, whilst Fiona Bane took 2nd (28th overall) in 22:54 in Poolbeg. Lastly, Lisa Shine took 2nd place (26th overall) in 26:01 in Glen River. Two results not recorded below were those of Kris Ryan in Australia and Aidan Hudner in Scotland. Kris ran with 169 other participants in Paradise Point, placing 3rd (27th overall) in 23:13, whilst Aidan ran 22.38 in Glasgow alongside 314 runners to place 77th.
