Crusaders were out in force this weekend, racing across the country in the mountains and on the roads and there were some super results, including a couple of wins. We start on Saturday, where we had at least 26 of our club members take part in the BHAA K club 10k race. There might have been a few PBs in the race, which is known for producing such outcomes. However, it has to be said that several of the runners reported that the usual looped course may have measured slightly short (by as much as 150m) which could account for any this year. Hopefully, the distance was accurate (unlike it seems the St Patrick’s Festival race on Monday where we have now heard that the start and finish gantry may have had to be moved on the morning of the race at the request of the Gardai and that the race probably did measure long after all). In any event, by all accounts, the K Club race, with its two 3km loops following a 2km run out and preceding the same 2km return to the finish, was hugely enjoyable and topped of by the usual fine spread in the clubhouse. In a huge field for the race of 490 runners, Italo Giancaterina came home in the same position that he occupied last Monday, 12th in a super time of 32:45. He was followed by Brendan Murphy who ran 33:12 for 15th and another top 50 place went to Ger Forde who ran 34:19 for 30th. There were other excellent results and top 100 placings for John McAuley (53rd in 35:32), Joe Walsh (55th in 35:39, not too far behind, Daniel Lowe with another stormer (64th in 36:08), Stephen O’Kennedy (67th in 36:23), John Fahy (72nd in 36:44), Karl Walsh (82nd in 37:40) and Andrea Talpo (96th in 38:23). It was a testimony to the quality of the field that 135 runners (one third of the field) broke 40 minutes for the race, among them Patrick Needham who ran 39:55 to place 131st. The remaining male runners from the club, nearly all of whom broke 50 minutes, were Tom Dunne (148th in 40:18), Tim O’Donnell (176th in 41:28), Eanna Farrell (189th in 41:59) with a likely PB, Brendan Glynn (199th in 42:35), Luke Haran (210th in 43:05), Robbie Moore (215th in 43:24), Tony Hackett (229th in 43:53), Neil Brown (304th in 47:48) and Paul E. Kelly (430th in 57:50). We had just 6 women in the contingent and they were led across the line by Maria Kennedy (276th overall and 46th woman finisher in 46:10). Maria was followed closely by Kate Murray (278th overall and 48th woman, in 46:22) and then by Sarah Lyons (289th and 53rd in 47:02), Mairead Cashman (410th overall in 55:05), Maureen McGinley (426th overall in 57:26) and Fiona Lane (466th overall in 1:03:13). Also, on Saturday, there was a noteworthy feat by Brian O’Kelly who took part in the East of Ireland Marathon series half marathon in Longwood, where he took the victory in a course record time of 1:10:01. Lastly, also on Saturday, several of our clubmates took to the mountains to run along the Wicklow Way in the IMRA-organised Maurice Mullins Half and Ultra. The “Half” does not mean it is a half marathon, but that is half the distance of the Ultra at 25.5km versus 51km for the Ultra. The former included a climb on relatively easy terrain of 971m, whilst the latter is described as being of extreme difficulty with a climb of 1,940m. We had two runners in the half. Warren words placed 8th in a field of 186 and a time of 1:56:21, whilst Brian McGuckin took 27th spot in 2:20:37. Warren took home the prize for 2nd M40 whilst Brian did likewise in the M50 age category. Then, in the Ultra, the plucky Becky Quinn joined 236 other runners including Donatas Jocius, to place 25th overall, 4th female and winner of her F40 age category in a time of 4:56:24. Donatas ran 6:06:30 to come home in 142nd place. On Sunday we had another race winner as Catherine Thornton took top spot (48th overall) in the field of nearly 300 participating in the 10th running of the Craughwell 10 mile road race in Co. Galway, organised by the local athletic club there (and famous, like the K Club, for its excellent spread to follow the event). In what is possibly Catherine’s first 10 mile race and which she nearly decided not to run because of a lingering head cold, the native Galway runner ran 1:07:05 on what was a hilly, and possibly marginally long, course. She took home an impressive trophy, which was of itself worth the effort. We had one runner in another 10 miler, down in Co Cork, in Mallow. In a race with more than 1,500 finishers, Barry O’Neill placed 621st in a time of 1:19:26. Then, on a blustery day in Wicklow, 5 of our members took part in the Wicklow Gaol Half, with its field of more than 750 runners. Luke Davis crossed the line first in 18th place in a PB time of 1:28:02, followed by Kenan Furlong, running outside the comfort zone of the parkrun environment for a change and running well (26th in 1:30:54), Damien Fitzgibbon (38th in 1:33:46), Dee Lawlor, marathon planning (39th in 1:33:48) right behind, along with another Spring marathoner, Triona Quill, who ran 1:40:45, to place 108th overall, 9th female finisher and winner of the F50 category. It was reported that there was a significant headwind running back into Wicklow Town towards the end on an extremely hilly and traffic-laden course (necessitating running up onto kerbs at times). Further afield, in Chicago, our American exile, Damien O’Brien, took part in the Shamrock Shuffle 8k, where he ran a PB time of 29:28 to place 259th in a field of 9,350. He reported that the winter has been long and tough and that finally it was good to get out and flex the muscles. Finally, we address the parkrun results which were, by and large, as usual quite noteworthy. Abroad, after her long distance efforts of last weekend, Kris Ryan placed first finisher, 18th overall, in Mudgeeraba in Australia, in a time of 23:09 and in a field of 159 participants, whilst in Chichester, in a field of 194, Michael Wycherley placed 2nd in a time of 18:57. Then, in Portobello in Edinburgh, our Scottish exile, Andrej Kujikis, ran 21:57 to place 45th in a field of 329 participants. Back home, first place finishes went to Orla Kennedy, back after a long spell, when she ran in Brickfields, placing 7th overall in a time of 21:23. Fiona Shine also placed first (14th overall) in Cabinteely in a time of 21:34. In the same event, David Carter took 4th place in 19:20. Then in Poolbeg, Caroline Meighan, back from her stint working in Paris, was first finisher in a time of 19:59 (12th overall), where she was joined by Zlatko Kulic (5th in 18:50), TJ Bourke (8th in 19:34), testing himself in his training for the Boston marathon in mid-April, David Timoney (33rd in 21:15), Zalan Kovacs (61st in 23:27) and Tony Owens (110th in 25:51). There was also a podium place for Lisa Shine in Glen River where she placed 32nd overall, 3rd female finisher, in 25:02. Just off the podium came Brian Carroll in Ballincollig where he placed 5th in 19:23, whilst Aoife Kelly placed 4th (13th overall) in Dungloe. Aoife was as usual joined by her husband, Paul, who placed 14th in the same time. Gillian Lyons ran 26:15 to place 8th female (44th overall) in Fairview, whilst Maria Pertl placed 32nd overall, 7th female finisher, in Tolka Valley, in a time of 28:08. Meanwhile, in Malahide, Ronan Moynihan placed 8th in a time of 18:19, whilst Jonathan Claridge also took 8th spot in St. Anne’s where he ran 18:30. BHAA K Club 10k (490) Overall place Name Cat.
