The second weekend of Women’s Meet & Train races took place on Sunday, this time at the southern end of Tymon Park, and the 2 mile cross-country race used an undulating course, familiar to many of us involved in the Dublin Novices or intermediates for example, running two loops of it.
14 of our members took part in the race which enjoyed a field of some 126 runners. All the team members did well, although one or two of the teams were not at full strength. Our A team representatives, Ciara Lynch and Fiona Shine placed 9th in 13:20 and 15th in 13:38, respectively. They were split by Joanne Carey in the B team and followed by Mona Samir (running as an independent) in 12th (13:30) and 17th (13:41), respectively, both running a XC event for the first time. Following Mona came three B team members: Emer Kenny (20th in 13:55), Tanja Narancic (37th in 14:21) and Olwyn Dunne (48th in 14:57) and they were followed by Lieze Verberght running for the D team (63rd in 15:55). Behind Lieze came two C team members, Carina Davidson (69th in 16:03) and Catriona Egan (80th in 16:31), followed by Anna Shine for the D team (89th in 16:55), Lisa Shine for the Bs (90th in 16:56) just coming back from illness, Maureen McGinley for the D team (97th in 17:25) and Máirín Shine (independent) placing 111th in 18:30. Team results have yet to be determined and, when released, the report will be updated. On the same day Tim O’Donnell joined a substantial and quality field of 395 in the Cork BHAA-organised IFF-Dupont 5k road race. On a flat course in decent conditions, Tim took 62nd spot in a time of 19:04. Further afield, our US exile, late of Chicago and now of New York, Damien O’Brien, ran in the NYRR-organised Fred Lebow Half marathon held entirely in Manhattan’s hilly Central Park. Damien ran 1:28:50 and, in a field exceeding 5,000, he placed 214th overall. Also abroad, Italo Giancaterina, our Italian exile in Italy, won a 6k XC race that ran parallel with a beach. The race was the Campionato Regionale Corsa Campestre and Italo ran 20:30 for the win. A result that was missed from last week’s report was that of Pat quill who took on, for the second year in a row, the Spine Sprint Ultra trail race over 71km from Edale west of Sheffield in the south, along the Pennine Mountains to Hebden Bridge in the north, a point -to-point event. Last year Pat completed the challenge in 19:14 and this year he knocked three and a half hours off, finishing in 47th place overall in a time of 15:39:57. There were only 57 finishers, with a significant number of retirees, and runners had to contend with high winds and limited visibility. There was plenty of participation from the club in the various parkruns on offer this weekend and as usual we produced a few podium finishes. Nina Holmes made a great return to competitive running when she ran with 88 other runners in Brickfields, finishing 20th overall and first woman across the line in 23:39. Brian McGuckin also took part there, placing 7th in 21:06. Peter O’Toole ran in St. Anne’s, taking 2nd place in a field of 551 and in a time of 17:39. Peter was followed by Irene Gorman (52nd and 10th in 21:32), Michael Maughan (58th in 21:53) and William Ralph (112th in 23:43). Stephen Hurley came across the line in 2nd place in Poolbeg, with its large field of 214. He ran 17:32 and was followed by Thomas Vogée in 4th (17:35), Brian Rainey (25th in 20:35), Dale Whelehan (32nd in 21:03), Russell Murphy (73rd in 23:55), Kevin Kenny (84th in 24:29), Franky Keane (120th in 26:04), Maureen McGinley (139th and 37th in 27:15), Kenan Furlong (141st in 27:20), Máirín Shine (190th and 73rd in 32:36), Lisa Shine (191st and 74th in 32:37), Fiona Shine (192nd and 75th in 32:38) and Tara Murphy, tailwalking. Darina Scully maintained her podium form, placing 17th and 2nd in 24:02 in the 197-strong field in River Valley Park, whilst Ali May Hann ran 24:05 in Darndale and in a modest field of 21 she placed 7th and 2nd. Michael O’Conor headed to Lisburn where he ran in Wallace Park, placing 6th in 17:55 in a field of 332, whilst David Carter took part in the parkrun in Bushy Park in London where, in a staggering field of 1392, he placed 66th in 19:32. Toby Benham placed 11th in Dodder Valley in a time of 21:21 and a field of 133, whilst Orla Kennedy ran in the 511-strong field in Marlay Park, where she placed 94th and 12th in 22:55.- Meanwhile, Paul F. Kelly placed 64th in 28:23 in Fairview, alongside 157 other participants, whilst Martina White ran 26:07 for 28th and 7th in the 101-strong field in Porterstown. Liam Lyster took 12th place in Strokestown in a field of 45, his time being 28:27, whilst Dee Lawlor ran 19:13 for 6th place in a field of 227 in Shanganagh. John Rooney joined 106 other runners in Sligo where he placed 21st in 24:41, whilst Olwyn Dunne ran in the 148-strong field in Cabinteely, placing 74th and 19th in 29:50. Kris Ryan joined the field of 204 in Mudgeeraba in Queensland, Australia, and our Australian exile ran 32:14, placing 123rd and 36th, whilst Colm Foley ran once again in Griffeen Park, where he placed 48th in 23:42. There were 188 participants in the event. Karl Walsh and Ger Forde ran in Naas, Ger with a buggy. Karl placed 22nd in 22:41 and Ger placed 115th in 32:29. The field measured 148. Finally, Diarmuid Byrne placed 77th in 26:41 in the 161-strong field in Poppintree. Cork BHAA IFF-Dupont 5k (395) Overall place Name Cat.
