![]() The week’s racing news was dominated by two events over the weekend. Four of our intrepid tracksters became bronze medallists in the national mixed 4 x 400 relays on Saturday evening and then on Sunday morning we had a super turnout for the Irish Life Marathon Race Series Fingal 10k in Swords, where the club provided all the pacers as well as a decent number of runners. We start with action on the track. On a cool and blustery evening, Sinead Moloney, Fearghal O’Hare, Charlotte Myers and Charlie Bastow did the club proud by taking third place and the national bronze medal in the 4 x 400m mixed relay in the Morton Stadium in Santry, one of the events in the AAI Games taking place over the two days of the weekend. Their combined time was 3:44.61 and only a hairsbreadth off second place. In the same Games on Sunday Gary Park ran 11:48.39 in the M35-59 3000m steeplechase, an event he has made his own over the years, and winning the age category. Mary Horgan placed 4th in the women’s 800m in 2:10.33, whilst Henry Griffin ran in the 3rd and last (graded) heat of the men’s 800m where he ran a super 2:06.24. On Friday evening, Finn Boyle gamely ran on the wet and windy track in the Morton Games in the Jerry Kiernan Foundation junior men’s mile race. In a field of 14 runners, Finn found himself in the mix for much of the super competitive race, eventually finishing in 9th place in a creditable time of 4:36.72. Moving on to the roads and trails, Saturday morning involved Crusaders in a few events. On holiday in Donegal, Kiera Roche, a native of that county, made a welcome post-natal return to racing, when she discovered that the Rathmullen 5k was taking place. In a field of 156, Kiera placed 76th overall and 14th female finisher behind Teresa Doherty, in a time of 20:50. On the same morning, Ciara Lynch had been hoping to participate in a 22k trail race in Co. Galway, in the mountains between Gort and Loughrea. In the event, because of weather conditions, the Slieve Aughty 22k Challenge was replaced by an 8.75k run. In a field of 102, Ciara placed 34th overall and 4th female home in a time of 52:57. Donatas Jocius also took part in a trail race on Saturday finishing in 7th place in the 60-strong field, running the Reeks Skyline in Co. Kerry. Further afield, on Friday night, Italo Giancaterina, our Italian exile, placed 2nd in a time of 26:43 in the Notturno Tortoreto Lido, an 8k out-and-back race that took place on the seafront in Tortoreto on the east coast of Italy. Then, on Sunday, we provided all 8 pacers needed for the Fingal 10k in Swords, the second of four races preparing runners for the Dublin marathon in October. All of them carried out their duties perfectly, coming home just inside the time goals of 45 minutes (Cian Coughlan and guest runner Catherine Thornton), 50 minutes (Joanne Carey and Miriam Logan), 55 minutes (Paula Bradshaw and Olwyn Dunne) and 60 minutes (Aitor Arribas Velasco and Joe Dunne). The super and most enjoyable race in its second return to Swords (after a hiatus involving its staging in Grangecastle Business Park for a time and then the pandemic) was on a slightly altered course from prior to 2022 (the start line has been brought back along the main street and the finish no longer involves a steep climb but also a much straighter run in to just behind the start line. Although, there was a strong westerly wind on the morning, it didn’t really affect runners that much on a course whose orientation is mostly north-south, and what wind did come into our faces at times was actually quite refreshing. The start was delayed by about 15 minutes but this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the more than 2,500 runners who took part in dry conditions. The pointy end of the race was also well populated by quality runners, both male and female. Apart from the pacers, we had at least 19 runners in the race, including one or two currently inactive members. Ciarain Kelly had a decent run to place 23rd in 35:24 and he was followed home closely by Jim Stagg (32nd in 35:42). Next came Paul Cowhie in a super time of 35:57 for 35th place and the man, who turns 60 later in the year, won the M55 age category in the process. Eddie Nugent followed behind in another solid performance (73rd in 37:44), with Karl Walsh running 39:39 in 160th position after having swapped places a couple of times with the next runner home, James Cottle (171st and M65 age category winner in 40:08). James ran negative splits in the race and also enjoyed a brief battle early on with a Bros Pearse runner in his age category, Michael Walsh, who placed 2nd. Members may be interested to hear that the next runner home was Sean Murphy of United Striders who trains with us from time to time and who placed 202nd in 40:54 and he was followed home by our first female athlete across the line, Áine Crotty (348th and 41st female in 43:25). Just behind Áine came ladies club captain, Rebecca Fleming, who placed 352nd and 42nd in 43:28, both women running well. Our next runner home was Tony Owens (399th in 44:22) and Tony was followed across the line by Dee Ni Chearbhaill (433rd and 56th in 44:45). Robbie Moore was the next runner to finish (488th in 45:42) and he was followed by Adam Kinch (518th in 45:33), new member Sean Brady (737th in 48:56), Hannah Jones (600th and 89th in 46:42), in training like many of us for the Dublin marathon, but unlike the majority of us in the race, running a 10k for the first time. Aoife Cowhie followed (935th and 181st in 51:45) and behind her came Darina Scully (1068th and 228th in 52:59), Gillian McDarby (1264th and 304th in 54:03), Kevin Kenny (1382nd in 54:50) and Emily Glen (1383rd and 358th in 54:53) who treated the race as part of a much longer Sunday run. IMRA organised two races in which Crusaders featured last week, the results of only one of which at time of initial writing were available. The results of the 2nd race, in Carrauntoohill in Co. Kerry on Sunday, have now been published and the report has been updated. The race in the Irish and Munster Championships was conducted on a course of extreme difficulty with a climb of 1100m and 98 runners completed it, among them Jason Kehoe who placed 7th in 1:45:44 and Donatas Jocius, on understandably heavy legs, placing 36th in 2:08:57. We had at least 5 runners in the IMRA-organised Ballinastoe mountain race on Wednesday evening. The race was another event in the Leinster League involving a distance of 10.5k with a climb of 504m and conducted over difficult terrain in Co. Wicklow. The course required runners to take one big loop with another smaller one inside. Clare Sullivan ran a stormer to win the women’s race in 67:09 for 49th place overall in a field of 142 finishers. Ahead of her came Warren Swords, again running well, placing 12th in 55:29 and just in front of her was Ollie McGrath who took 43rd spot in 65:21. Gavan Doherty placed 75th in 75:29, with Ian Clifford not too far behind in 81st (76:42). We had at least two members taking part in triathlons over the weekend. Isabelle Cairns and Seamus Moore competed in the Skerries Tri, where, in the run element of 5k, Isabelle ran 21:46 and finished the event 2nd in her age category, whilst Seamus ran 20:38. Attendance at the parkruns on Saturday morning was generally lower than usual across the board as we experienced heavy weather across the island. We did have some considerable success, however, among those that did turn out to run. Ilona McElroy was a first finisher in Falcarragh in Co. Donegal, where, in a field of 83, she placed 7th overall in a time of 20:42. Tara Murphy was another first finisher in Carlow Town, where in a field of 42, she placed 8th overall in 26:05, with partner John Lohan taking 3rd spot overall in 22:25. Luke Haran came home ahead of the 68-strong field in Mungret, where he ran 20:20, whilst Kate Murray ran in Bushy Park, where, in a field of 194 she placed 33rd and 2nd in 23:30. Maureen McGinley ran once again in Farfalle in Padua, Italy, where, in a field of 32, she placed 16th and 4th in 30:20, whilst Ross Neill led the crusader contingent home in 3rd place in 18:34 in the 124-strong field in Poolbeg. Ross was followed by Stephen Hurley (13th in 20:45), Kenan Furlong (16th in 21:22) who added the parkrun to the end of a long run, Josie Ward (48th and 6th in 24:47), Mairead Cashman (88th and 25th in 30:56) and Cría Dowling (91st and 28th in 31:15). Kieran Little took 4th place in a time of 16:23 in Shanganagh, alongside 198 other participants who included Georgina Hawkins (95th and 19th in 26:49) and Niamh Quinn (162nd and 57th in 32:10). Killian Barry was one of two representatives in Marlay Park where, in a field of 274, he placed 5th in 19:10, followed by Stephen Mulligan (66th in 24:10), whilst Barry O’Neill ran in Pobalscoil na Tríonóide with its field of 38. Barry placed 9th in 23:53. Olwyn Dunne took 74th and 13th spots in Fairview alongside 144 other runners, whilst Aitor Arribas Velasco was our lone runner in Castlehaven where he placed 13th in the 30-strong field. Eoghan Corrigan ran in Griffeen Park where he placed 32nd in a field of 113, whilst Tim Hyland placed 121st in Malahide in a time of 28:35. The field measured 199 in total. Finally, Máirín Shine joined 100 other participants in Cabinteely where she placed 68th and 17th in 31:07. Irish Life Fingal 10k (2255) Overall place Name Cat. One hesitates to call them road races, as the 5-mile event, in particular, is mostly conducted on concrete footpaths and grass. The out-and-back nature of the events on footpaths, which are not segregated for runners coming in both directions (making for lots of weaving), also can be made more challenging by the strong coastal breezes that generally prevail. The races may not be everyone’s cup of tea for these reasons. Reports from runners also indicate that the experience can be slightly chaotic at times and this certainly seems to be reflected in the published results where there appears to be some confusion, particularly with the half marathon results, as to who actually won, both the men’s and the women’s races, and, as a consequence, it is not totally clear as to the placings of the runners who followed the likely winners home. We start, however, as usual, on the track. Wednesday evening saw the sixth graded meet of the Dublin Athletics series take place on DSD’s new track in Taylorsgrange, west Dublin. This was an opportunity for athletes to try out the track and we had at least nine members of the club do so. As usual, various distances were available, principally 100m, 800m and 3,000m. In the women’s 100m A graded race, Sinead Moloney placed 3rd in 13.42, whilst in the men’s grade B Mark Inuwa also placed 3rd in 11.61. Liam Beaumont ran in the C grade race where he also placed 3rd in 12.01, with John O’Loughlin taking 6th place in the D grade event in a time of 13.89. In the combined C and D grades of the women’s 800m, Amy McGuinness placed 3rd in the C grade in 2:31.71, whilst Laura Garcia placed 3rd in the D grade, but 6th overall, in a time of 2:44.26. Paul E. Kelly contested the D grade of the men’s 800m, placing 10th in heat 1 in a time of 3:16.56, whilst Gary Park ran in the second heat, where he placed 9th in 2:18.15. Finally, Paul Cowhie, another of the 4 masters from the club running as seniors, took 8th spot in the 3,000m grade C race in a time of 10:01.89. So, the Clontarf runners had to experience quite windy conditions in their races on Saturday morning. Nearly 2,700 contested the half marathon, with a further 1,100 in the 5-mile event. We had at least 9 members of the club in the half, with a further 7 at least in the shorter distance event. Kenan Furlong was our first runner home in the half marathon, where he likely placed 26th in an excellent 1:24:28, followed by Cormac Fenton running strongly for 141st in a time of 1:36:37, just ahead of Christophe Marsan (142nd in 1:36;51). They were followed by Michael Judge (274th in 1:42:49), Simon Kenny (358th in 1:43:48), Cría Dowling (378th and likely 20th female finisher in 1:43:26), David Healy (437th in 1:48:42), Christina Campbell (1,510th and 30th in 1:56:58) and Linda Walsh (2,082nd and 545th in 2:23:21). Alex Ainsworth cannot stop recording PBs at the moment and, sure enough, he got one in the 5-mile race, despite the wind. Alex placed 4th overall in a great time of 29:06 and he was followed by some great running by Maeve Lochrie (21st and 4th in 32:55) and Laura Garcia Gonzalez (61st and 10th in 36:04). In between the two training partners came Tony Owens who placed 54th in 35:28. The contingent was completed by Brendan Glynn (107th in 38:52), Sharon Woods (138th and 36th in 40:07) and Lydia Bigley (259th and 88th in 43:56). There was one IMRA race last week in the Leinster League This was a race that started and finished at Ticknock, quite close to the action at DSD’s track nearby, and being conducted on a clockwise loop, over 9k with a climb of 350m on difficult terrain, of Three Rock and Fairy Castle. There were 188 finishers in the event, including 7 Crusaders. Our best placed finisher was Jason Kehoe who, despite going the wrong way at one point and losing time and places, still managed a creditable 8th place in 42:19. Jason was followed by Warren Swords (15th in 43:44), Cian Coughlan (58th in 50:51), Gareth Phelan (88th in 54:45), Will Holton (93rd in 55:42), Gavan Doherty (107th in 57:74) and Ian Clifford (126th in 61:34). Further afield last week, Daniel O’Mahony and Richie Phelan ran in the 120-125k Ultra trail de Corse on the island of Corsica. Despite it being less than well-organised, the two managed to finish, with Daniel completing the distance, conducted over mountainous trails in 43h28m and Richie, 44h8m, both earning themselves valuable points for the UTMB next year. Even further away, Marty James, one of our Australian exiles, took part in the Sandown Raceway Relay in Melbourne, running his 6.25k leg in just over 25 minutes. Italo Giancaterina, our Italian exile, was also in action on Sunday, where he placed 3rd in a time of 31:03 in a 9.65k beachfront race in Scerne Di Pineto in Italy. Finally, members may be interested to hear that Louise O'Riordan competed in the Harbourman Triathlon in and around Wicklow town over the weekend. Louise ran the 10k element in a time of 52:17, placing 24th female finisher and 5th in her age category. There were no Crusader first finishers in parkruns this week, but a few podium places and some good times generally, even so. In Shanganagh, in a field of 236, Richard Healy placed 3rd in a time of 18:58. He was followed by Carina Davidson (111th and 30th in 27:26), Orlaith de Burca (147th and 48th in 29:34) and Niamh Quinn (190th and 77th in 32:58). Ross Neill ran once again in Sligo, where, in a field of 107, he placed 3rd in 18:15. Finally, also to appear on the rostrum was Tara Murphy, in Tullow. Among 82 other runners Tara placed 15th and 3rd in 25:21, whilst partner John Lohan placed 5th in 22:39. Kate Murray joined198 other participants in Griffeen Park, where she placed 37th and 4th in 23:02, whilst Carmel Cooney recorded the same feat in St. Anne’s Raheny, placing 25th and 4th in 21:02. In the field of 272, Carmel was followed by Tim Hyland (58th in 23:43) and Hannah Jones (62nd and 10th in 23:47). Eoghan Corrigan took 5th spot in Waterstown with its field of 58. Eoghan’s time with the buggy was 23:15, whilst, in Poolbeg, Simon Everard also took 5th place in a time of 19:49. In the 187-strong field Simon was followed by Paul Campbell (15th in 21:27), Rob Glascott (46th in 23:55), Josie Ward (62nd and 12th in 24:44), Kevin Lambe just behind Josie (63rd in 24:48), Maureen McGinley (104th and 24th in 28:16), Gillian Curran (111th and 34th in 28:39), with Fiona Bane tailwalking once again. Darina Scully placed 75th and 9th in 25:28 in Malahide alongside 215 other runners, whilst Tomás Bradley placed 7th in 19:48 in the 91-strong field in Killarney House. Ciarán Smyth took 6th spot in a time of 26:37 in the modest field of 28 in Narin Beach, whilst in an equally modest field of 31, three of the Shine family ran in the Achill Greenway parkrun. Máirín placed 17th and 5th in 30:31, whilst Anna took 18th and 6th places in 31:06, followed by Lisa in 19th and 7th in 31:12. We had two runners in Glen River with its field of 52. Aitor Arribas Velasco took 14th spot in 25:04, followed closely by Ailsa Berkely who placed 17th and 5th in 25:19. Finally, we had runners in both Porterstown and Bushy Park. Kevin Flynn ran in Porterstown where, in a field of 88, he placed 77th in 37:05, whilst Mairead Cashman joined 263 other runners in Bushy Park, where she placed 170th and 48th in 30:12. Kildare, followed by the latest stage of the Peugeot Race Series in the Roscommon Harriers 10-miler and topped off with the classic Achill Half marathon and 10k races. On the track, the stadium in Tullamore, Co. Offaly played host to the national U23 and U20 track and field championships. We had four athletes competing on the track in Tullamore, with two of them returning to Irishtown with medals. Many congrats to them. Hugo Magee took bronze in the U23 400m final in a time of 49.01, having qualified in the first heat of 3 in 3rd place in 51.56. Hugo has also now had his selection confirmed for the 4x400m Irish relay team to compete in Espoo in Finland in the U23 European Championships in mid-July. Finn Boyle took the silver medal in the U20 men’s 800m final, finishing in a time of 1:55.77. Two hours later he took to the track again for the 1,500m, where he placed 16th in 4:17.16. Our Ukrainian U20 athlete, Mark Inuwa, ran in the heats of both the 100m and 200m, where he placed, respectively, 5th in 11.57 and 6th in 24.00, whilst Charlie Bastow placed 8th in the final of the U20 200m in 23.83, having qualified in 3rd place in his heat in 23.33. Moving off the track, the 5k road race in Kilcock was an event of some quality and the results showed. In cool and windy conditions, where mercifully the rain held off until the last runner had crossed the line, 20% (115) of the field of 574 broke 17 minutes, with 60% finishing inside 20 minutes. The women’s field, in particular, was well stacked with elite runners, the fast returning Shona Heaslip having a great dogfight with Ide Nic Dhomhnaill to win by only 4 seconds in the end in a great time of 15:43. Meanwhile, Efrem Gidey had no contest for the overall win and led from gun to tape to head the field by a margin of a minute in a course record time of 13:47. There were quite a few PBs on the night among the runners, including several of our clubmates, where, on a largely flat anti-clockwise (almost circular) country road course the wind was largely behind them until the last kilometre or so. Kevin Fitzgibbon recorded his second PB in a week, placing 35th in a time of 15:54 and he was followed home by Ciaran Diviney who won his M50 age category, placing 49th in 16:11. Ciaran was followed by Ger Forde (62nd in 16:23) and by Joe McDermott, who placed 79th in a PB time of 16:34, with Alex Ainsworth also recording a PB of 16:33 just behind in 80th, having gone off the start line a little further back. Ciarain Kelly was next, placing 103rd in 16:47, and he was followed by Eddie Nugent with another strong run to record a time of 17:55 for 183rd place. Kathryn Gibbons was the first female Crusader home with a PB run of 18:50 for 257th and 31st female finisher, to be followed by Kathryn Sweeney (272nd and 37th in 19:00) who pushed her almost all the way. Tim O’Donnell was not too far behind in 19:01 to place 279th with, slightly further back, Ciara Regan (313th and 52nd in 19:41). Miriam Logan was another runner to break 20 minutes, her time of 19:54 good for 347th and 64th places. Next came Gill Earley (374th and 75th in 20:21), and Gill was followed by Margaret Foley (who is starting her Berlin marathon training) with a PB time of 20:27 for 380th and 78th places. Eoghan Corrigan was the next Crusader across the line (390th in 20:38), followed by Daniel Cullen (431st in 21:16), Brendan Glynn (459th in 22:09), Emily Glen (468th and 117th in 22:15), Paul E. Kelly (538th in 26:22) and Maureen McGinley (551st, 161st and 6th F55 in 28:11). Members may be interested to hear that Declan Ryan, the visually-impaired Thurles athlete who trains with us from time to time, after having had to negotiate an extremely tight and bunched start, finished in 137th place in a time of 17:19. On the following morning we had one runner in the Achill 10k. On a hilly and windy course, with a major climb in the first half, Sarah Lyons joined 486 other runners, placing well in 12th overall, but, more importantly, 2nd woman across the line, in a time of 42:58. Three other runners from the club took part in the Achill half marathon. In a field of 574, Phelim was our first runner home in 36th place in a time of 1:34:51, followed, on the hilly course (which took in most of the 10k), by Cian Coughlan (62nd in 1:40:35) and by Áine Crotty who finished in 64th and 7th places in a time of 1:39:20, Áine presumably having started further back from her fiancé. Moving further east, another race in the Peugeot race series took place in Roscommon on Saturday morning. As with Kilcock, the field was one of some quality, not unexpected with a lot at stake in the race series. Like Achill the hilly race was run in windy conditions. Ronan Smith found the conditions challenging, but still managed to get round in a time of 76:45 to place 143rd in a field of 464. Behind Ronan came Kate Murray who placed 157th and 39th in 77:59, also coming home in 5th place in her F50 age category. Further afield, we had a couple of interesting results. Maurice Kelter, one of our exiles in Australia, ran in the Gold Coast marathon on Australia’s east coast, where, on a flat course but with windy conditions, he placed 135th out of a field of nearly 6000 and in a huge PB time improvement of 2:42:39. In fact, Maurice also recorded a PB in the first half and then held on for dear life in the second half! Then, in Chicago over the weekend, Chris Russell, our Scottish clubmate, took part in the World Beer Mile, where, in a team of 5 representing GB, he ran an amazing 5:14 to take 9th place, with the team placing 2nd overall. Two of our athletes competed in the Hell of the West triathlon in west Co. Clare on Saturday morning. Isabelle Cairns ran the 10k out and back run element in 45:50, whilst Toby Benham ran 38:55. We also had some of our members broaden their skills by taking on the 170km Ring of Kerry Cycle. They included Áine Kenny, Tomás Dunne, Franky Keane, Conor Macguinness and Joe O’Reilly. We had a fair number of runners as usual in this weekend’s parkruns. As usual we came away with some first finisher and podium results. Not unexpectedly, we took the double in Poolbeg. No fewer than 18 Crusaders took part in the event involving 190 runners, with Alby Allan leading the field home in 18:47 and Carmel Cooney also crossing the line in first place, 17th overall, in a time of 20:49. Behind Alby came Michael Wycherley (2nd in 18:56) and after Carmel came Simon Kenny (18th in 20:55), followed by Kenan Furlong who incorporated the parkrun into a much longer effort (19th in 20:56) in preparation for the Clontarf half next weekend. Paul Campbell was next (32nd in 22:18), followed by Enda Currid (38th in 22:42), Sharon Woods (56th and 8th in 23:44), Russell Murphy (70th in 24:32), Josie Ward (71st and 12th in 24:33), Cliodhna O’Reilly (98th and 21st in 26:44), Fiona Shine (100th and 22nd in 26:53), Maureen McGinley (122nd and 35th in 28:24), Anna Hernick (127th and 37th in 28:47), Anna Shine (129th and 39th in 28:53), Máirín Shine (132nd and 41st in 29:21), Cynthia Perucca (170th and 63rd in 35:01) and Lisa Shine (174th and 67th in 36:37). In Sligo, with its field of 98, Ross Neill placed 2nd in 17:38 and he was followed by Cathal O’Hara (37th in 27:15). On a trip to Singapore, Tara Gavin ran in the East Coast Park, one of 3 parkruns there, placing 15th and 2nd in 22:39. The field measured 85. Michael O’Conor ran in Falcarragh in Co. Donegal where he placed 2nd in a field of 64 and in a time of 19:03, whilst Peter O’Toole also placed 4th in St. Anne’s Raheny. In a field of 374, Peter ran 18:24. Elsewhere, John Lohan and Tara Murphy ran in Naas, where, in a field of 143, John placed 22nd in 22:18 and Tara came home in 56th and 7th places in 24:59. Andy Deuser took 8th spot in the 123-strong field in Fairview where he recorded a time of 21:43, whilst Darina Scully ran once again in River Valley Park where, alongside 100 other runners, she placed 24th and 8th in 27:36. Eoghan Corrigan ran a recovery parkrun after Kilcock, pushing young Oisin in his buggy, placing 20th in Corkagh with its field of 190 participants. Eoghan’s time was 23:33. Richard Healy placed 9th in Shanganagh in 19:06, the field there measuring 258, whilst, in Glengariff with its field of 85, Dale Whelehan also placed 9th in 23:22. Andrew Hudner, our exile in Scotland, ran 24:46 for 54th place in the 259-strong field in Pollok in Glasgow, whilst Orlaith de Burca ran in the 62-strong field in Amager Faelled parkrun in Denmark where she placed 47th and 10th in 31:52. Tim Hyland joined 272 other runners in Malahide where he placed 59th in 23:57, whilst Colm Foley ran once again in Griffeen Park. In a field of 163, Colm ran 23:35 for 33rd spot. Paul F. Kelly ran in Poppintree alongside 126 other participants. Paul’s time was 23:44 and he finished in 22nd spot. In Cabinteely, Stephen Mulligan and Emma O’Mahony joined 182 other runners, with Stephen taking 43rd place in 25:14 and Emma finishing in a time of 37:06 for 149th and 53rd places. Finally, Aitor Arribas Velasco and Mairead Cashman ran in Tramore Valley, Cork, where Aitor placed 33rd in 23:09 and Mairead in 91st and 28th in 29:19. The field there measured 150. Kelly 00:23:44 Our track and field athletes were out in force this week, participating in two events, both held at the newly-commissioned DCU-owned Morton Stadium in Santry. The first, the Dublin graded meet on Wednesday proved to be a warm-up for some of our athletes for the preliminary round of the National League on Sunday. However, for some athletes, a mix of junior, senior and masters, the League provided once again an opportunity to compete in events that would not be their disciplines and takes them well outside their comfort zones in support of the team effort. We will start with the National League, held on a day that started out rainy, becoming sunny and warm, but later in the day experienced a terrific thunderstorm with hailstones. It was a good test for the track though, as although activity was suspended for the duration of the storm, perhaps over half an hour, the track drained well and races were convened quite quickly after it. The event, however, did run well over time because of electronic timing issues with the clock in the early part of the meet and then problems with gun and starter’s mike following the deluge. As a result, the meet may have finished about 90 minutes behind schedule. The format this year was different from the past, with just the one preliminary round (instead of 2) involving separate races for county and club competitions. So, there were frequently 3 heats for each event, where the competitions could not be combined. There was no seeding in the preliminary round so that clubs which may have been premier division in previous years were competing against others previously premier as well as clubs that would have been previously first division. In other words, the 19 women’s clubs and 17 men’s started on a level playing field. The determination of a final for the top 8 (creating a premier division) and also for the clubs finishing 9th to 16th (in a first division) was based on the best 15 results for each club from the 21 events on offer (scoring going from 17 points for the win and 15 for second, down to 1 point for 16th place). Crusaders women competed in 16 events, whilst our men took on 18. At the end of an exciting day both men and women have qualified for the first division final on 13 August, with the men placing 11th overall on 142 points and the women, 12th on 121. So, the athletes who did us proud were Matt Behan (1st in the 110mH with a time of 14.65), Sam Cooke (5th in the 400mH with 68.57), Matt, Charlie Bastow, Luke Timlin and Sean Owens in the 4x100m relay (2nd in their heat and 3rd overall), Barry McCarthy (8th in the 1500m with 4:12.10), Luke (3rd in his heat of the 400m with 57.29, and 13th overall), Gary Park (10th in his familiar participation in the steeplechase, with an excellent hurdling approach for a sub 12 minutes finish), Charlie (2nd in his heat of the 200m in 23.63 and 8th overall), Colm Parnell (5th in his heat of the 800m in 2:04.31 and 12th overall), Joe McDermott (12th in the 5,000m in 17:11.03), Sean (3rd in his heat of the 100m and 10th overall), Jonathan Bell (10th with his best throw in the hammer of 19.56m and 6th in the shot put with a throw of 11.02m), Sean Tubridy (11th in the long jump with a leap of 5.24m and 11th in the javelin with a throw of 27.56m), Conor Napper (joint 6th in the high jump, reaching 1.65m), James Quinn (9th in the discus with a throw of 28.35m), William Doherty (11th in the triple jump, leaping 10.24m) and veteran John O’Connor who came out of athletic retirement to place 10th in the 56lb weight for distance, taking 10th place with a throw of 4.39. The women’s team effort was also to be praised and we were well represented by Sinead Moloney (who placed 13th in the high jump with a height of 1.35m, 4th in her heat of the 200m (27.53) and 12th overall, and 2nd in the 28lb weight for distance throwing it 5.84m), Katie Rose Barry (3rd in her heat of the 100mH in 16.87 and 6th overall, as well as the javelin where she placed 16th with a throw of 13.35m), Eva Lynch, Eleanor Selby, Emily Lyne and Nadine Deehan (3rd in their heat of the 4x100m and 10th overall), Laura Garcia Gonzalez (11th in the 1500m in 5:24.41 and 6th in her heat of the 400m just after the 1500m (72.37) and 14th overall), Emily Sheils (a strong PB showing in the 3000m where she placed 3rd in 10:24.03), Annie Hughes (2nd in her heat of the 800m and 9th overall in a time of 2:30.67), Tess O’Loughlin (5th in her heat of the 100m in 13.58 and 14th overall), Sinead, Tess, Maeve Lochrie and Emily (4th in their heat of the 4x400m relay and 7th overall), Nadine (14th in the shot put with a put of 6.55m), Karen Conway (8th in the hammer (29.4m) and 9th in the discus (21.78m)). Well done to all on what was a really enjoyable afternoon of athletics in the national stadium. A super footnote to the action was the participation in the 3rd heat of the 4x400m relay of the National U23 4x400m relay team seeking to achieve the qualifying time for the European U23 athletics championships in July. Hugo Magee was a member of the team that did produce a qualifying 3:10.29 in the event, running the third leg. Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, Dublin Athletics had hosted its 5th graded meet at the same stadium. In warm conditions, the meet contained several events, including a 200m junior championship where we picked up the gold medal. In the women’s grade C 200m, Sinead placed 5th in 27.62, whilst in the grade D edition, Katie Rose placed 2nd in her heat in a time of 27.19. In the men’s 200m A race, Sean and Charlie Bastow, placing respectively 4th and 8th in the race, but 1st for Sean as a junior, in respectively 22.61 and 23.31. Mark Inuwa took on the B grade race of the same distance, placing 6th in 23.81. Leo Gormley ran in the C grade where he placed 4th in 24.25. The other distances on offer were the 800m and 5000m. In the women’s grade C 800m, Amy McGuinness placed 2nd in 2:31.42, whilst in the men’s A grade, Kevin Woods took 6th spot in 1:53.49. Enda Clarke and Henry Griffin ran together in the C grade 800m, with Enda finishing in 4th in 2:05.05 ahead of Henry in 5th place in a time of 2:07.22. Gary Park and Paul E. Kelly ran in the 800m grade D series, with Gary placing 10th in 2:20.79, whilst Paul’s time seems not to have been recorded accurately. Members may be interested to know that Mary Horgan paced a fast-paced women’s 800m A race, getting to 600m. A decent blowout for her. We had just one runner in the men's 5000m C grade event. Paul Cowhie placed 6th in 17:29.65. There were also field events on Wednesday evening and we had competitors in the discus. James Quinn placed 2nd with his first throw of 33.07m, whilst his brother Conor placed 4th with a throw of 30.18m in the 5th round. Road-racing took a back seat this week with only one local race and the Waterford Half with Crusader participation. The local race was the Clonee 10k organised by Dunboyne AC on Thursday evening. The day may well have been the warmest of the year up to that point and there was quite a bit of humidity. Conducted on country roads, which remained open to traffic, starting and finishing just outside Clonee in Co. Meath. The course is essentially an out-and back with a short anti-clockwise loop at the far end. It is generally flat, but there are a few minor drags, and, also, being in the country side, we did have a few flying insects in our faces at times. The most important thing, however, was that our runners performed extremely well on the night with several PBs and podium places, both individuals and teams. Just before heading off for a couple of months undertaking some professional training in San Francisco, Andrea Rondina enjoyed a super run, breaking away from the pack to track down two lead runners and ultimately placing 2nd in a field of nearly 350 runners and in a PB time of 32:27. Altogether, we had 14 Crusaders in the race and Andrea was followed home by others from the club with PBs. Kevin Fitzgibbon ran a PB of 34:35 for 9th place and he was followed by Eddie Nugent (34th in a PB time of 37:34) who was just ahead of Emily Sheils (39th and 5th female finisher in a PB time of 38:01). Aoife Quigley and Kathryn Gibbons were next across the line, Aoife running 40:04 for 61st and 9th, with Kathryn just 20 seconds behind in 40:24 for 66th and 11th places. James Cottle was further back having gradually lost touch with the other runners over the course of the race, finding the second half quite tough, particularly the seemingly incessant last kilometre with its slight uphill finish on a blind bend. With 3 to score for the women, Emily, Aoife and Kathryn placed 2nd out of 7 clubs in the team competition, whilst it needed 4 for the men and the team of Andrea, Kevin, Eddie and James took 3rd place out of 8 teams. James also won the M65 age category. On Sunday Rob Glascott took part in the Waterford Viking Half marathon, one of the 3 races on offer making a return since the pandemic (full, half and quarter marathons). The race was conducted largely as an out-and-back along the Waterford Greenway with a couple of loops along the south bank of the river Suir. The east-west course is mildly undulating with a major climb at the half way point. Rob placed 134th in the field of 876 in a time of 1:43:21. There was one race in the mountains organised by IMRA last week in which we had finishers. The race in the Leinster League on Wednesday evening took place on a clockwise loop of Brockagh Mountain in Co. Wicklow. The course involved a climb of 443m and a distance of 11k. In a field of 162 finishers, Jason Kehoe placed 7th in 54:22 and he was followed by Ollie McGrath (42nd in 63:39), Ian Clifford (90th in 63:48) and Gavan Doherty (110th in 78:02). We had a significant turnout for the Poolbeg parkrun on Saturday morning, the event itself enjoying a larger field than usual of 217. No fewer than 17 Crusaders took part. They were led home by Ross Neill in 3rd place in 17:54 and Ross was followed by Michael Wycherley getting back into his groove (5th in 18:32), Daniel Sheridan (13th in 20:06), Kenan Furlong, who combined the parkrun with a long steady run (23rd in 21:05), John Lohan (25th in 21:09), Cría Dowling (40th and 6th in 22:27), Dale Whelehan (44th in 22:54), Julian Callan (60th in 24:02), Paul Campbell and Stephen Mulligan who were unusually given the same time (80th and 81st in 25:05), Cliodhna O’Reilly (92nd and 18th in 25:43), Anna Shine (135th and 32nd in 29:04), Mary Dolan (143rd and 36th in 29:28), Máirín Shine (144th and 37th in 29:33), Paul E. Kelly (173rd in 32:13), Louise Snowe (195th and 68th in 36:54) and Fiona Bane, tailwalking. There were three first finishers from the club this week. In Brickfields with its field of 75, Nina Holmes placed 9th and 1st female runner across the line in 21:22, whilst, in Father Collins Park, Ruben Vega led the entire field of 79 home in 18:52. Tara Murphy returned to her native USA where once again she ran in the Delaware and Raritan parkrun with its field of 55. Tara placed 13th and 1st in 26:00. Isabelle Cairns placed 5th and 2nd in New Ross alongside 77 other participants, whilst Paul McNamara took 3rd spot in Cabinteely. In an event involving 166 runners, Paul ran 20:32. Darina Scully placed 26th and 7th in a time of 26:02 in River Valley Park, alongside 85 other runners, whilst Mark Browne placed 8th in Erris where, in a field of 34, he ran 23:54. Brendan Glynn took 6th spot in 24:24 in a field of 27 in Portumna, whilst Thomas Vogée took time off from his holiday in East Anglia to run the Felixstowe Parkrun, where, in a field of 309, Thomas placed 10th in 18:11. Colm Foley ran once again in Griffeen Park where, in a field of 152, he placed 28th in a time of 23:24, whilst Cynthia Perucca took on Shanganagh alongside 217 other participants. Cynthia ran 35:22 for 197th and 71st places. Andy Deuser placed 11th in 22:14 in the 169-strong field in Fairview, whilst Mairead Cashman (and possibly Kate Murray) ran in Bushy Park where, in a field of 214, she ran 30:10, placing 137th and 32nd. We had two runners in Mullingar. Franky Keane took 19th spot in 24:39, followed by Lisa Shine (68th and 26th in 44:36). There were 75 runners in the event. Eoghan Corrigan placed 17th in 22:27 in the 110-strong field in Royal Canal, Kilcock, whilst Maureen McGinley joined 149 other runners in Dodder Valley Park, where she placed 68th and 22nd in a time of 28:15. Diarmuid Byrne and his partner Maria Pertl ran in Poppintree, with Diarmuid placing 45th in 25:46 and Maria, 95th and 26th in 32:23. The field there measured 140, whilst, in St. Anne’s with its field of 387, Cian Coughlan ran 21:50 for 39th spot. Cian was followed by Áine Crotty (47th and 6th in 22:15), Tim Hyland (88th in 23:43) and Paul F. Kelly (117th in 25:14). Clonee 10k (349) Overall place Name Cat. Morgan. We weren’t expecting roadworks to start on the Sam Beckett Bridge as the race was about to start, but at least we had all the permits in place to allow us to delay the conflict. The breakdown just before the start of an express coach at the turn from the North Wall Quay onto the Matt Talbot road bridge was also not expected, but at least we had enough time to warn everyone and, indeed, it was actually off the racing line in the end and many runners did not even notice it. So, the race went off without any major incident on a warm and sunny evening, the only challenge on the fastest flattest course in Dublin being the strong easterly wind which may have denied our eventual overall winner, Pierre Murchan, a course record (his winning time of 14:32 being 2 seconds off the record set in 2017 by John Coghlan). We had a few Crusaders in the race, most of them, too numerous to mention, running with their colleagues from the many corporate entries we received, but the majority of those on the quays that night were out on the course performing to perfection, under the leadership of Liz Nixon, the admirable task of stewarding, for which as a club we are so grateful. We also had some great pacers, among them those supporting the latest C25k initiative, the programme successfully put together by Paul Kelly. Work on setting up the race went back to February, and our super hard-working committee members were able to draw on our experience from organising the previous 6 editions to have it go smoothly on the night. Once again, we had a lovely evening, with the race followed for the third time by what is now becoming the traditional barbecue in Capital Dock Square. It was wonderful to see such happy faces among the 1,550 odd runners who contested the race, many of whom attended the party afterwards, and we had so many compliments on the night and on social media in the days to follow. There was a race within the race, for AAI-affiliated clubs and this year’s winners of the Mary Purcell cup, for the winning female club team, were a mother and daughter combination representing Kilkenny Harriers (the family of Niamh Richardson and her twin daughters who placed 2nd and 3rd in the women’s race, Grace and Maebhdh). This is the third year that the cup has been awarded, its first two presentations going to Sportsworld, who were runners up this year. The Terenure club did, however, win the men’s trophy, the John Fitzsimons Cup, for the first time (following previous wins by Leevale and Raheny in 2019 and 2022). It was a great fundraiser for the club, supporting the Docklands, Ringsend and Irishtown communities and a major fixture now in the running calendar. On Sunday, DSD held the DSD Games, to celebrate the opening of the club’s new track and stadium. The event was co-organised by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Council who provided much of the financial support for the construction of the track. We had several members of the club compete in what was in some ways rather like the fortnightly graded meets with hears of differing standards in some of the events. Mary Horgan made a welcome return to competitive running after the birth of her second child, placing 6th in a field of 13 in the women’s 1500m in a time of 4:36.08, whilst we had 3 runners in the A and B men’s races of the same distance. In the sub-4:10 edition, Barry McCarthy placed 10th in 4:04.59, whilst in the B race, Henry Griffin ran 4:25.90 for 6th place followed by Patrick Conlon who placed 7th in a PB time of 4:32.08. Matt Behan won the 110mH in a time of 14.40, followed by Sean Owens who placed 2nd in 14.68. Mark Inowa placed 2nd in heat 2 (of 6 heats) of the 100m in 11.73. We had 3 runners in heat 1 of the 200m. Hugo Magee took 3rd spot in 21.80, followed by Mark Inowa in 4th in 23.64, with the master athlete, Donal Swift, placing 8th in 38.13. In the faster 3rd heat, Sean Owens ran 22.40 for 4th place. Two of our club mates contested heat 2 (of two) of the men’s 800m. Finn Boyle took 2nd place in 1:54.59, followed by Fearghal O’Hare who placed 3rd just behind on 1:54.90. Donal ran once again in the 400m, placing 6th in his race in 1:31.97. Finally, Conor and James Quinn contested the shot put. With his second throw of six, Conor won the event with a distance of 13.01m, followed by James in 6th place, his last throw of 8.85m being his best of the series. Friday saw the Pride 5k kicking off this week’s gay pride activities in the capital. The race, as usual, took place on the footpaths and roads of the Phoenix, and, unlike the previous night, there was a deluge at the start. There was such a large number on the front line so eager to get underway in the torrential rain that the scene was described as resembling that of a column charging into battle! We had at least 4 runners in the event. They were led home by Dave Carter, brother to the race director, who finished in 28th spot in a time of 19:35. Dave was followed by Annie Hughes who placed 78th and 10th female finisher in 21:02. In the race, with its field of 1,161 finishers, Dee Ni Chearbhaill was next in 97th and 12th places in a time of 21:39, followed by Lydia Bigley (274th and 35th in 24:31). The 32nd running of the Michael Manning Dunshaughlin 10k (and 4th race in the Peugeot race series) took place on Saturday evening in warm conditions. One of the fastest, if not the fastest, 10Ks in the country, the race did not disappoint with a strong elite showing, producing some great times. Our fast runner on the night was ger Forde with yet another PB. Ger placed 40th in the field of 971 finishers, in a great time of 33:52 and 5th M40. Ger was followed by Joe McDermott, just seconds off his PB, placing 67th in 34:47 and by Peter O’Toole who also recorded a PB with his time of 35:40 for 102nd place. Ronan Smith completed the contingent with a satisfying 39:46 for 275th place, such a large number of finishers running under 40 minutes. Among the many ex-Crusaders in the race, Catherine Thornton, who trains with us from time to time, placed 116th and 9th female finisher in a PB-equalling 36:01 and Sean Murphy, who also trains with us, placed 280th in 40:03. The first race of the Irish Life Dublin Marathon Race Series took place in Corkagh Park on Sunday morning. It was a 5-mile event, won overall by Peter Somba, who had placed 3rd in our Docklands Race three days earlier. Adrienne Jordan distinguished herself, placing 31st and 2nd in 31:29, followed by Karl Walsh who ran 31:42 for 34th place. Further back came Robbie Moore (165th in 36:20) and Kevin Kenny (347th in 40:46). On the same day, we had runners in two other relatively local races. David O’Donnell joined 1,231 other runners in the Castleknock 5k, crossing the line in 169th place in a time of 22:34. There were two of our club mates in the Thoroughbred Half marathon in Co. Kildare. Paul F. Kelly placed 35th in a field of 365 in a time of 1:34:59, whilst Seamas Bulaeir finished in 107th spot in a PB time of 1:49:30. Further afield, on Saturday, Brian McGuckin and Niall McGeorge had headed to Livigno to run in a 17k mountainous trail and road race. Unfortunately, Brian was forced to drop out after 3k with a suspected chest infection, but Niall was able to complete the challenge in 3:50:04 to take 135th place in a field of 179 finishers. There had been more action in the mountains closer to home over the course of the week. On Wednesday night, there was a race, organised by IMRA as part of the Leinster League, over Djouce once again. This time it was based on the route known as the Ayling Abyss. The race was 10.64k long, involving a climb of some 607m. 164 runners contested the event, among them Paul Flynn who placed 24th in 64:43 and Raghnall O’Donoghue (31st in 65:55). Then, on Saturday, Donatas Jocius, joined the field of 73 to run in the Dublin Mountain Trail Festival 25k, one of the races in the festival. Donatas performed well, placing 2nd overall in 2:18:44. Elsewhere, two of our London-based exiles were active over the weekend. Kate O'Malley placed 2nd female finisher in the Maverick Dorset Trail Race, whilst Thom Martini ran in the Osterley 10k set in the park there, recording a time of 44 mins. Louise O'Riordan marked a return to competition by placing 3rd female finisher in the Tri an Mhi sprint distance triathlon (2:05). Despite the rainy conditions early on Saturday morning there was a good turnout in the parkruns on offer. As usual, we had a fair smattering of first finishers. In the USA, Tara Murphy placed first (9th overall) in a field of 67 and in a time of 25:28 in the Delaware and Raritan Canal parkrun. In a field of 24, Sarah Lyons took 8th and 1st finisher place in 24:24 in Tolka Valley. She was preceded in the event by her husband, Phelim Murray, who ran 22:50 for 4th place. Ciara Regan was another first finisher, this time in Fairview where she ran alongside 152 other participants. Ciara’s time was 20:49 for 5th place overall and she was followed by Andy Deuser who placed 9th in 22:06. Áine Kenny ran in Mountbellew Forest, where, again, she was a first finisher (3rd overall) in a field of 23, completing the distance in 23:25. We had two first finishers in the Crusader-dominated 189-strong Poolbeg parkrun. Stephen Hurley finished ahead of the field in 17:53, with Carmel Cooney placing 14th and 1st in 20:37. Ahead of Carmel came Ross Neill (3rd in 18:20), Michael Wycherley (6th in 18:31), Cathal O’Hara (8th in 19:08) and Simon Kenny (11th in 20:10). Paul Campbell followed Carmel home in 21st place in 21:01 and he was followed by Kenan Furlong (36th in 22:58), ex-club President Niall O’Connell making a welcome return (43rd in 23:19), Dee Lawlor (59th in 24:32), Josie Ward (60th and 11th in 24:41), Cliodhna O’Reilly (76th and 17th in 25:26), Maureen McGinley (123rd and 33rd in 28:38), newcomer Louise Snowe (158th and 55th in 34:03) and Niamh Trihy (172nd and 67th in 36:29). Irene Gorman ran 20:44 for 20th and 2nd in the 402-strog field in St. Anne’s and she was followed by Tim Hyland (246th in 30:17). Darndale enjoyed a modest field of 15 runners, among them 5 Crusaders who placed well. Julian Callan took 3rd spot in 23:30. Anna Shine placed 7th and 2nd in 27:25, followed by Fiona Shine (8th and 3rd in 27:29), Máirín Shine (10th and 5th in 28:23) and Lisa Shine (11th and 6th in 28:24). Michael O’Conor and Rob Glascott ran in Brickfields where they joined 67 other runners. Michael placed 2nd in 18:49, whilst Rob’s time was 22:37 for 13th spot. Dale Whelehan ran in the 276-strong field in Bushy Park where he placed 36th in 23:51, whilst Aidan Hudner ran in Pollok in Glasgow in a field of 239, where he placed 45th in 24:40. Colm Foley took 43rd place in Griffeen Park, where he recorded a time of 23:55 in a field of 233. Ciarán Smyth joined 91 other participants in Oldbridge where he took 15th place in 23:15, whilst Olwyn Dunne ran once again in Cabinteely. In a field of 186, Olwyn placed 66th and 14th in 26:09. Thankfully, everything went smoothly for the runners and our men ran away with team and individual silver medals. More of that story below, as we start, as usual, with events on the track. Saturday afternoon was dedicated to an IMC meeting in UCD and we had several runners take part in the races that coaches Mike McGovern and Susan Walsh put on offer. Our athletes took part in various distances from 200m to 3,000m, with 400s, 800s and even a mile race in between. Luke Timlin was our only runner to take part in the men’s 200m B grade race where he placed 3rd in 23.24. He joined Finn Boyle for the men’s 400m B standard race, where he placed 5th behind Finn who won the race. Finn ran 50.93 for the win with Luke running 54.33. Claire Mooney took on the 400m distance this week, and, in the A standard race, she placed 2nd in 56.18, just under 2s behind the winner. Fearghal O’Hare ran in the 800m men’s B race, where he placed 7th in 1:53.89, whilst, in the men’s F, Aaron Cashman similarly placed 7th in 2:05.49. We had two runners in the men’s G standard. Enda Clarke took 3rd place in 2:03.17, just ahead of Henry Griffin who followed him in 4th place in 2:03.74. We had 3 athletes take part in the women’s 800m C grade race. Annie Hughes led the contingent home in 7th place in a time of 2:31.42, with Maeve Lochrie next (8th in 2:35.16) and Laura Garcia Gonzales a little further behind (9th in 2:42.26). Barry McCarthy and Colm Parnell contested the C standard mile race with a substantial field of 12 runners. Barry came home in 4th place in 4:23.71, just ahead of Colm who took 5th spot in 4:23.85. Finally, we had two runners in the men’s 3000m B race, another event with a large field. Patrick Conlon placed 17th in 9:28.72 in a photo finish with another runner, given the same time. Joe McDermott followed in 19th place in 9:47.55. On Sunday, 1,312 runners took part in the Irish Runner 5 mile race which started at the top end of Phoenix Park on Chesterfield Ave, winding its way in an anti-clockwise direction along the Ordnance Survey Road, down the Upper Glen Road to the Acres Road and then back up Chesterfield from the Phoenix Monument, along the Ordnance Survey Road for the second time, finishing after a tight turn on Furze Road. Conditions were warm and humid, so it made for a challenge. We had 8 runners in the field and the first four of them to cross the finishing line made up the second placed senior team on the day, despite all of them being masters. Brian O’Kelly placed 5th in a time of 25:54, also winning M35 individual silver. Brian was followed by Ciarain Kelly (24th in 27:56, 6th M35), with Peter O’Toole not too far behind (28th in 28:09, 5th M40). The team was completed by Paul Cowhie who came home in 37th place in 28:46, also winning the silver medal in the M55 age category competition. So, our runners packed well and distinguished themselves with the senior team medal, in a competition involving 16 clubs. Having said that, the results also confusingly indicated that Brian, Ciarain and Peter had won O/35 team gold. We will wait to see what the final decision is, but in the past, the senior team medal has generally trumped the masters one. Carmel Cooney also ran in the race, starting quite far back so that there was over a minute between her chip and gun times. Carmel placed 243rd overall and 59th female finisher in 35:39. Likewise, Sharon Woods had a similar experience, placing 511th overall, 130th female finisher, in 40:56. In between them came Alan Kavanagh who took 272nd spot in 36:22 and further back came Elad Solomon who placed 546th in 40:48. Racing actually started earlier in the week, with the BHAA OPW 5k trail race that took place in the Phoenix Park on Tuesday night. The 2-lap race is conducted on trails near the cricket pitches to the west of Chesterfield Avenue and just above the Khyber Pass. In light winds and a mild temperature, and on a sunny evening, 199 runners contested the race and we had at least 7 Crusaders among them. The first across the line was Paul Reidy (4th in 17:44) and he was followed by Karl Walsh (19th overall and 4th M45 in 19:16). Karl was followed by Tony Hackett (71st in 22:21) and by Robbie Moore (74th in 22:34). Next came Dee Ni Chearbhaill, winning her F45 age category in 22:51 and placing 10th female finisher, 78th overall, with Maureen McGinley (155th and 40th in 28:09) and Mairead Cashman (172nd and 53rd in 30:18) further back. On Wednesday, Karl Walsh also decided to participate in the IMRA Howth Summer 8.7k race, an event in the Leinster League involving a climb of 308m. In a field of 99 finishers, Karl placed 28th in a time of 47:34. On Saturday, the day was taken up by several of our clubmates participating in this year’s edition of the Wicklow Way Relay (WWR). At time of writing we have not had enough visibility on the composition and performance of the teams, of which there were 36, and if it does become clearer we will endeavour to update the report. Suffice it to say that Jason Kehoe ran the first leg for the team he represented, placing 5th out of the 36 runners. We also had Joanne Carey placing 20th in leg 8 for her team, whilst Dee Lawlor ran leg 5 for his team, placing 17th. Kate Murray ran the same leg, finishing in 25th spot. Mairead Cashman also took part in the all-women's Crusader team, along with Emer Kenny, Olwyn Dunne and Mairin Shine. Further afield, Donatas Jocius ran in the World Mountain Championships in Innsbruck in the Austrian Alps on Saturday morning, representing his native Lithuania. In a race of approx. 14km, Donatas’ team placed 29th overall, with Donatas finishing in 116th place in a field of 131 finishers. Well done to him! Numbers were generally high in parkruns on Saturday morning, although there were fewer Crusaders than usual involved, possibly because of the WWR. Naturally, though, we had some first finishers and podium places among those who did run. Katie Rogers, on what may probably be brief visit home from Australia to her native Kerry, ran in Tralee where, in a field of 238, she placed 8th overall and first woman home in 19:56. Ilona McElroy was also a first finisher in Tolka Valley where she placed 2nd overall in a field of 44 and a time of 21:07. In third place overall in the event came Paul F. Kelly who ran 21:12. Ciara Regan was also a first finisher, again in Poolbeg where she placed 7th overall in a time of 19:29. Ciara was headed by Michael Fitzsimons who ran 18:58 for 4th place and she was followed by Franky Keane (26th in 21:48), Paul Campbell (30th in 22:12), Josie Ward (41st and 7th in 23:05), Julian Callan (59th in 24:25), Kenan Fulrong pacing the 25 minute runners (66th in 24:59), Cliodhna O’Reilly (75th and 15th in 25:37), Kevin Kenny (84th in 25:57), Sharon Woods (88th and 21st in 26:19), Maureen McGinley (114th and 38th in 27:58), Djinn von Noorden (125th and 46th in 28:24), Mary Dolan (135th and 53rd in 29:23), Gillian Curran (136th and 54th in 29:24) just behind, Lianne Leech (164th and 69th in 33:16), Cynthia Perucca (167th and 72nd in 35:14) and Mari Hansen tailwalking in the field of 179. Eddie Nugent finished 2nd in Cabinteely. In a field of 147, Eddie ran 19:27, whilst, in Borrisokane, John Lohan joined a modest field of 21, placing 2nd there in 21:54. Also placing 2nd in his parkrun was Rob Browne who ran in Shanganagh. Rob completed the distance in 17:54 ahead of Janet McManus who ran 27:27 for 105th and 26th places. The field measured 230.Toby Benham ran in Denmark, where, in the Amager Faelled parkrun he ran 20:25 for 4th place in a field of 72. Susanne English joined 109 other runners in Oldbridge, where she placed 26th and 4th in 25:42, whilst Fiona Shine ran alongside 90 other participants in Athlone, where she placed 32nd and 8th in 28:05. Darina Scully joined a field of 103 in River Valley, placing 24th and 5th in a time of 25:32, whilst Helena O’Keeffe took on Tramore Vally. In a field of 162, Helena placed 64th and 12th in 25:23. Eoghan Corrigan and Brendan Glynn ran in Donabate with its field of 204 runners. Eoghan placed 16th in 22:16, whilst Brendan followed him home in 28th place in a time of 23:05. Finally, Kevin Flynn ran 37:42 for 58th place in a field of 76 in Porterstown, whilst Liam Lyster ran 41:06 for 24th place in a field of 33 in Strokestown. ![]() The Summer is really heating up now with so many races to choose from. Take your pick of track, road and mountain running. It’s all up for grabs. We had great participation in those high profile events over the weekend and some excellent results. The 4th Dublin Athletics graded meet of the season took place on Saturday morning on the new track in UCD and it brought out the best in our athletes. The meet included various Co. Dublin championship events, among them the men’s 10,000m and the men's and women’s 400m and we picked up medals in each of these. First up was Joe McDermott who ran in the 10,000m where he placed 4th in the race in a great time of 35:40.08, but picking up the silver medal in the championship. Joe was followed by Claire Mooney who took on the 400m, placing 3rd in the race in 56.46 in a close finish and winning gold in the Dublin championship. In the men’s A+B race, Luke Timlin and Finn Boyle appeared together. Luke placed 2nd, taking the silver medal in 51.59, with Finn a little further back in 5th in 52.98. Both finished behind Lee Byrne of Rathfarnham WSAF who trains with us and who placed 1st in 51.14. Many congrats to them. We had several other runners hone their skills over the day at the meet in 100m, 400m and 1500m events. Laura Garcia Gonzalez ran in the women’s 1500m grade D race where she placed 4th in mid pack in a time of 5:27.09, whilst in the men’s races of the same distance, Finn Boyle placed 4th in the A grade event in 4:08.01 and Paul Kelly finished in 8th place in heat 1 of the D grade in a time of 7:12.39. The 400m races saw several more of our athletes compete. In the women’s B race, Katie Rose Barry ran 60.84 in a close finish, whilst Oscar Sherry ran in the men's C race, where he placed 7th in 54.95, Paul Kelly taking 5th place in 88.99 in the D grade race. Finally, two of our male athletes ran in the A and B 100m races. In the A grade race, Mark Inuwa placed 7th in 12.07, whilst Charlie Bastow ran 11.99 for 4th place in the B event. Karl Fitzmaurice also ran on Saturday, but his result appears not to have been recorded. On the roads, the week started on Tuesday evening in Dunboyne. The race was the familiar 5-mile event sponsored by Govt. Services. However, it had not been certain it would go ahead and as a consequence attracted a smaller field than those of the past with only 186 contesting what is a reasonably flat one loop course conducted mostly on back country roads around Dunboyne (and taking in a large part of the Dunboyne 10k). Local club member Peter Somba won it once again and he was followed by at least 8 Crusaders. Joe McDermott was the first of these, running 28:21 for 13th place overall and 4th M40. Joe was followed on a lovely early summer’s evening by Eddie Nugent (30th in 30:31) and by Adrienne Jordan (42nd and 2nd female finisher in a great time of 31:02). Karl Walsh was next (48th in 31:21) and he was followed by Tony Hackett (91st in 35:43). Kate Murray was the next athlete to cross the line, placing 107th, 17th and 3rd F50 in 37:03, and she was followed by Robbie Moore (113th in 37:48) and Martina White (131st and 27th in 40:18). Members who train with Sean Murphy on Saturday mornings in the Phoenix Park may be interested to hear that Sean ran 31:07 for 44th place. On Friday, Sean’s wife, Dee Ni Chearbhaill, ran in the flat and fast Bohermeen 5k as the sole representative of the club. Dee placed 170th overall in the 363-strong field, also crossing the line as 45th female finisher and 5th F45. Again, on Friday, we had a runner in the Balbriggan Summerfest 5k. In a field of 251, Seamus Moore placed 10th in a time of 18:58. Not to be forgotten last week, Máirín Shine participated in a 5k race organised by a new club, West Sligo AC, on the coast near Easky in Co. Sligo on Tuesday evening where she finished in a time of 28:42 for 32nd place in a field of 49. One of the highlights of the bank holiday weekend was the annual running of the Women’s Mini Marathon in Dublin, the women-only 10k race that in the past has enjoyed fields of over 40,000 runners. This year’s event, taking place in brilliant sunshine after midday on Sunday and extremely warm conditions, saw a diminished field of under 17,000 runners, but still an impressive event with such numbers. In previous years the race has incorporated the Co. Dublin 10k championships. However, this year, following the introduction of the AAI one day licence fee, otherwise known as the levy, the organisers chose not to seek an AAI race permit or charge the levy and as a result the championships did not take place, a rather odd outcome considering that the championship runners would not have had to pay the levy anyway. The team element of the race was also, unfortunately, absent as a result. It did not take too much away from the event and we still saw a decent turnout of club runners, including at least 20 Crusaders. They were led home by Aoife Quigley who ran a brilliant race, often in no man’s land, to place 23rd in 39:48, recording negative splits in the process, one of several to do this among our contingent. The race course takes runners from Wilton Terrace in Donnybrook down the N11 to the UCD flyover just after 5k and then back down Nutley and onto the Merrion Road straight into the finish on Pembroke Road. Ordinarily, it’s quite a fast course, but of course with so many runners on it, it would have been harder for those starting further back to achieve anything close to PBs. Aoife was followed by Kathryn Sweeney who placed 34th in 42:00, just ahead of Cría Dowling who also recorded negative splits in her 42:23 for 41st place. Joanne Carey followed (73rd in 44:37) with Emily Quinlan (78th in 45:06) and Nina Holmes (79th in 45:13) not so far behind. Tara Gavin also had a good race placing 87th in 45:47 with Aoife Matthews (92nd in 46:01) just behind. Olwyn Dunne also ran negative splits in recording a time of 46:14 for a top 100th place finish (98th). Not so far back came Emily Glen (112th in 46:51) and Emily was followed home by Anna Brown (302nd in a negative split time of 50:29). Another runner with negative splits was Aoife Cowhie who was next (340th in 52:28), and Aoife was followed by Kelly Brown (410th in 53:25). We had 3 more runners recording negative splits. They were Hattie Hall (866th in 52:10), Anna Hernick (1243rd in 55:45) and Amish Mehta (6206th in 1:24:29). In between came Edel Doherty (1318th in 52:26) and Djinn von Noorden (4769th in 1:14:26) and they were followed by Cynthia Perucca (13,969th in 1:53:05). Tanja Narancic also ran but unfortunately had to drop out after about 2k, having not shaken off an injury from which she has been suffering recently. The other really major event on the roads over the weekend took place in the city of Cork, where, on Sunday runners took part in full and half marathons as well as a new 10k race this year. Again, as in Dublin, the events took place in sunny and extremely warm conditions, and there was likely quite a high level of attrition in the longer races as a result, not ideal conditions for a marathon. Four Crusaders completed the marathon. In a field of 1,800 finishers, Rob Browne was our first man home, placing 33rd in 2:52:55. Rob was followed by two Frenchmen, Tim Francony (73rd in 3:02:01) and Christophe Marsan (184th in 3:18:34). Further back, and supporting Sanctuary Runners, came Kevin Kenny (962nd in 4:16:49). The field in the half marathon was almost double that of the marathon at about 3,250. We had at least 8 runners in that event, led home by Alby Allan (116th in 1:30:26). Alby was followed by Ciara Lynch, surprisingly with yet another PB, placing 161st and 12th female finisher in 1:33:16. Cian Coughlan was next, running 1:37:03 for 209th spot, and he was followed somewhat further back by Diarmuid Fahey (419th in 1:44:31) and by Conor Lydon (962nd in 1:56:24). Ger Forde paced his nephew running his first half, in 1:57:49, placing 1,047th and Ger was followed by Aitor Arribas Velasco (1083rd in 1:56:26) and Áine Crotty who had volunteered to pace the 2:30 runners, placing 2,761st in an accurate time of 2:29:28! Members may also be interested to hear that Shane Collins, an ex-Crusader now running in his native county for Leevale, placed 5th in a time of 2:30:58. We had only the one athlete in the inaugural 10k. However, he did us proud in that race. Brian O’Kelly joined an amazing field of around 3,800 runners, taking 2nd place in 32:35, just 25s behind the winner Denis Hegarty (32:10). Further afield over the weekend, Marty James ran in the Mansfield Marathon in Australia where he placed 5th in 3:08:50 and, in Italy, Italo Giancaterina won the XI Corri Marruvium 8.75k set in San Benedetto Dei Marsi on a twisty and slightly undulating street course. Italo’s winning time was 29:26 for the distance. Moving on to the mountain, there were two IMRA races in which we likely had participation. On Wednesday evening runners competed in a Leinster Trail League race, the Devil’s Glen in Co. Wicklow. It involved a 283m climb in a race of 8km, following the Seamus Heaney and Waterfall walks at Devil’s Glen. Jason Kehoe placed 4th and awarded 1st M40 in the race in a time of 34:43 and he was followed by Gavan Doherty who placed 86 in a field of 165 in a time of 46:54. The other race was the Leinster Championship event in Fraughan Rock Glen in Co. Wicklow. It involved a climb of 770m in a race measuring just over 10k. We had 2 Crusaders who finished the race. Paul Flynn placed 12th in a field of 36 finishers in 1:28:57, whilst Gavan Doherty took 28th spot in 2:05:11. We had runners in quite a few parkruns on Saturday morning, some of the runs being less familiar than normal, reflecting the fact that some members were away for the bank holiday weekend and accordingly were taking advantage of there being a parkrun near where they were staying. Stephen Hurley and Rebecca Fleming took the honours this week as first finishers. Once again, Stephen led the field home in Poolbeg, leaving 121 runners in his wake as he recorded a time of 17:18. Behind Stephen came a smaller contingent than normal from the club. Daniel Sheridan placed 7th in 19:10 and he was followed by Russell Murphy (50th in 24:13), Gillian Curran (61st and 10th in 25:41), Cliodhna O’Reilly (63rd and 11th in 25:50) and Una McCullagh (89th and 21st in 29:28). Rebecca joined 53 other runners in Brickfields, where she placed 6th and 1st in 21:44. The only other podium place went to Eddie Nugent in Cabinteely. In a field of 131, Eddie placed 3rd in 19:24 and he was followed home by Stephen Mulligan in 85th place in 30:26. Meanwhile, just off the podium, Darina Scully joined 119 other participants in Gorey where she placed 24th and 4th in 23:48. We had a few 5th place finishers, with Máirín Shine placing 22nd and 5th in 27:51 in a field of 40 in Narin Beach, whilst Michael Wycherley, on a trip to Suffolk, ran in Bury St. Edmunds where he also placed 5th in a time of 19:27 in a field of 238. Finally, Michael O’Conor headed north to Lisburn where he ran in Wallace Park, placing 5th in 19:00 in a field of 191. Maureen McGinley joined 71 other participants on Bere Island in Co. Cork where she ran 28:54 for 20th and 6th places in a time of 28:54, whilst Sharon Woods took 7th female spot in Tymon Park. In a field of 105, Sharon placed 33rd overall in a time of 24:58. Further afield, Kevin Kavanagh and James Moran took on Listowel, where Kevin placed 7th in 18:56 and James took 26th spot in 26:49. The field there measured 59. Lisa Shine ran along with 107 other runners in Oldbridge, where she placed 73rd and 21st in 29:39, whilst Brendan Glynn ran in a field of 173 in Donabate, taking 33rd spot in a time of 23:12. Andy Deuser found himself in a field of 221 in Fairview, where he placed 19th in 22:12, whilst Eoghan Corrigan crossed the finishing line in 7th spot in 21:25 in the 83-strong field in Avondale. John Lohan and Tara Murphy ran in Deerpark Forest in Virginia, Cavan, where John ran 26:05 for 18th place and Tara, 34th and 9th in 30:44, in a field of 51, whilst Liam Lyster took 22nd spot in 43:20 in a field of 33 in Strokestown. Kevin Flynn placed 75th in 37:07 in the 89-strong field in Porterstown, whilst Diarmuid Byrne and Paul F. Kelly ran in Poppintree. Alongside 144 other runners, Diarmuid placed 28th in 23:20, whilst Paul ran 25:04 for 49th spot. Finally, we had 3 runners in Shanganagh. Olwyn Dunne took 77th and 14th places in 25:29, ahead of Orlaith de Burca (119th and 35th in 29:06) and Carina Davidson (166th and 65th in 38:03). The field measured 177. BHAA Govt. The weekend in particular was marked by several events at home and away in which Crusaders featured prominently. We start as usual with track and field. During the week the 3rd graded meet of the season took place over in Lucan. Over the weekend we had a small number of Crusaders take part in the Leinster Championships down in Carlow and also some of our athletes joined other Irish athletes in Oordegem in Belgium at the IFAM/EA Challenger meeting there. In Lucan on Wednesday night, Ciara Barry ran in the B race of the 400m where she placed 3rd in 60.46, whilst her sister Katie Rose ran 63.50 in the C grade, also placing 3rd in her race. Sean Owens took 4th place in the men’s 400m A race, finishing in 53.90. Then over the weekend he placed 4th in the junior men’s race in Leinster with a time of 54.05. Henry Griffin took on the 800m in the C grade and in heat 1 he placed 3rd in 2:06.15, whilst Enda Clarke ran in heat 2 of the same grade where he placed 2nd in 2:07.91. We then had a runner in each of the two heats of the men’s 800m grade D event: Paul E. Kelly placed 12th in 3:18.07, whilst Brendan Glynn placed 9th in his heat in 2:49.89. Down in Carlow, Donal Swift won silver in the M70 category of the 400m in 1:33.52, whilst also placing 5th in the 200m in 39.50. Finally, Liam Lyster won the M65 shot put with a throw of 9.57m. Onto the roads and, midweek, Toby Benham took part in a Cork BHAA 5k road race, the John Buckley, with an astonishing number of 897 finishers for such an event. Toby placed 37th in a PB time of 16.27 on the fast course. Also on Wednesday evening, further afield, one of our London-based exiles, Kate O'Malley won the women's race in the Run Through Hyde Park 10k in a PB time of 37:28. We also had a few runners take part in the Staff Relays in the Phoenix Park on Thursday evening. The race involves each runner in a team of 5 completing a 5k leg on a mix of the Acres on grass and along the Military Road (the Snake) and the Khyber Pass. Olwyn and Joe Dunne, Rebecca Fleming, Joe McDermott, Gary Park, Brendan Glynn and Chris Russell were just some of the Crusaders who likely took part in the corporate event on a warm evening. On Saturday morning, racing returned to the Phoenix Park for the annual Calcutta Run for the legal community conducted there around the zoo and starting and finishing in Blackhall Place. The Run is actually two races, a 5k and a 10k, the latter measuring slightly longer than its name implies. We had 6 runners in the shorter event. Emily Sheils and Maeve Lochrie possibly achieved PBs with their 1st and 2nd placings in the women’s race. Emily ran 17:54 for 4th overall in a field of 579, whilst Maeve placed 6th overall in 18:30. Ahead of them came Patrick Conlon in 2nd place overall in a time of 16:55. Also in the race were Brendan Glynn (34th in 22:00) and Caroline Crowley and Eoghan Corrigan with their son Oisin in a buggy. Caroline placed 72nd and possibly 13th female finisher in a chiptime of 21:45, with Eoghan in 73rd in 21:44. We also had great results in the 10k. In a field of 323, Stephen Hurley placed 4th in 36:41 with Ross Neill on his shoulder in the same time for 5th place. Paul McNamara was not too far back in 11th place in a time of 40:12. 12 Crusaders travelled to Scotland’s capital city for the Edinburgh Marathon Festival races on Sunday morning. They were joined by some guest runners from Galway City Harriers and Celbridge along with a couple of Crusader exiles who currently live there. It was a super weekend away and a thoroughly enjoyable experience, particularly as the weather, as in Dublin, was sunny and warm. The half marathon was the first race of the day on Sunday, starting at 8 am in the sun but with a cool temperature from close to the city centre and weaving its way north and eastwards to the coast with lots of twists and turns early on and downhill for the most part (playing havoc with the quads!) but with a few uphill climbs too on what is essentially a net downhill course. There was a short out and back in Holyrood Park, under the shadow of Arthur’s Seat, the site of much international cross-country competition in January of years gone by, and it was fun to see clubmates ahead and behind about 3k into the race. There was another out and back towards the end of the race as, at about 15k as we passed through Musselburgh with its finish on the race course and so we had a good chance to see our positioning as well as those of our friends in the last 6k of the race. Our first runner home was Chris Russell with a super PB time of 74:04 for 43rd place overall in a field measuring well over 10,500. Not too far behind Chris came Thomas Vogée, another runner to record a PB, with a time of 77:48 for 93rd place and behind Thomas came yet another PB-recording runner, Kevin Kavanagh. Kevin placed 127th in 80:13, knocking off a few seconds from his recent successful half marathon run in Riga. Members may be interested to hear that guest runner, ex-Crusader, now with GCH, Catherine Thornton was next in 157th place overall, 9th female finisher and 3rd in her age category in a well-grounded time of 81:02 and Catherine was followed by Kieran Martin who also had a solid performance (despite his thoughts to the contrary!) in running 82:17 for 182nd place. Further back came Kevin Lambe (426th in 87:59) fresh from a long sojourn on the French island of Réunion and a parkrun in Ringsend the day before and delighted with his run. Kevin was followed by yet another excellent run from Aoife Quigley (485th overall, 63rd female finisher in 88:47) who considered the race to be a game of two halves, likely recording negative splits. Not too far behind Aoife came another of our guest runners, Celbridge’s James Hanway (517th in 1:29:27) who had Brian McGuckin hard on his tail at the finish (525th in 89:29). Both Brian and James had overtaken James Cottle who was going through a slightly tough patch at around the 8k and 10k marks respectively (after James C had originally passed James H around 3.5k) but James C managed to keep James H in sight for a lot of the second half of the race as he recovered his form, also gradually reeling in Brian. However, on the out and back element at the end, with only about 30m between them Brian overheard James shouting encouragement to Chris as the lead runners approached on the other side of the road and as we turned to come back to the finish he took off with a bang, nearly catching James H and leaving James C in his wake. After that James was able to push a bit but still ended the race 45s back in 573rd place and a time of 90:14. It was a fun battle and at least he had the consolation of beating the other 61 competitors in his M65 age category. Just behind James came Gillian Earley, another runner with a PB, despite one of her shoes falling apart during the later stages of the race. Gillian ran 91:10 for 621st and 93rd places. One of our Edinburgh exiles, Niall McGeorge, was next, placing 1058th in 96:58, having run much of the race with Rebecca Fleming (1101st and 184th in 97:23). Behind them came Miriam Logan who ran 101:23 for 1555th and 292nd places. Our other GCH guest runners also ran well: Eimear O’Leary placed 547th and 75th in 1:29:48; Sinead Foran placed 952nd and 150th in 1:35:54; and Niamh Hennelly placed 772nd and 120th in her first half marathon with a time of 1:33:28. The marathon took place 2 hours after the start of the half and so the runners had increasingly warm temperatures to negotiate. The course followed the route of the half but runners kept going along the coast before making the turn at about 27k. In a field of more than 7000 finishers, Charles-Edouard Cattier, who flew into Edinburgh just for the day, recorded another PB, after his recent exploit in Madrid. Charles-Edouard ran 3:08:41 for 380th place, whilst another of our exiles, New Zealand native Andrej Kujikis, ran 3:37:41 for 1339th place. There were two events in the mountains last week. On Wednesday, in the Leinster League there was the Sugar Bowl 7.5k. The race involved a circuit and climb (of 450m) of Sugarloaf in Co. Wicklow and was considered difficult but on a marked route. Jason Kehoe placed 3rd in 39:02 in a field of 170 and he was followed by Raghnall O'Donoghue (36th in 47:01), Karl Walsh (50th in 49:15) and Gavan Doherty (96th in 55:03). Then, on Sunday, Becky Quinn took the women's title in the Leinster Championships held in Drumgoff. In a field of 48 Becky placed 13th overall in a time of 1:32:28 on the 14.5k course with it 650m climb in Co. Wicklow. Enjoying the great weather, there was as usual another great turnout for Saturday’s parkruns. Sarah Lyons was a first finisher in Tolka valley where she placed 5th overall in a time of 20:55. In a field of 38, Phelim Murray also ran, placing 4th in 20:46. Máirín Shine also finished ahead of the women’s field in Erris in Co. Mayo, where with a time of 27:55, she also placed 13th overall, just ahead of daughter Lisa who placed 14th and 2nd in 27:56. John Lohan and Tara Murphy ran in Oranmore. In a field of 69, John placed 6th in 21:52, followed by Tara (22nd and 2nd) in 25:48. Toby Benham also took 2nd spot in Tramore Valley, Cork where, alongside 149 other runners, he ran 18:56. As usual, we had a large turnout in Poolbeg. Michael Wycherley placed 3rd in a field of 140 in a time of 18:23 and he was followed by Josie Ward (23rd and 4th in 22:13), Sharon Woods (30th and 5th in 23:05), Russell Murphy (46th in 24:36), Kevin Lambe (53rd in 25:24), Stephen Mulligan (54th in 25:28), Cliodhna O’Reilly (58th and 14th in 25:38), Gillian Curran (104th and 40th in 30:10) and Maureen McGinley (105th and 41st in 30:11). Áine Crotty took 31st and 5th places in a field of 250 in Ballincollig in Cork and in a time of 23:17, whilst fiancé Cian Coughlan found a parkrun on a trip to Finland. He joined 50 other runners in Tokoinranta, finishing in 18th place in a time of 22:57. Kate Murray and Mairead Cashman decided not to run in the Calcutta Run this year, opting instead for the Bushy Park run. Kate placed 20th and 4th in 23:35, whilst Mairead took 88th and 29th spots in 29:15. There were 169 runners in the event. Andy Deuser ran in Fairview, where he placed 11th in a field of 215 and in a time of 21:25, whilst Paul F. Kelly and Diarmuid Byrne joined 180 other runners in Poppintree. Paul placed 8th in 19:43, whilst Diarmuid crossed the line in 69th spot in a time of 26:53. Dee Lawlor ran with his daughter again in Cabinteely where he placed 15th in a field of 159 and in a time of 23:00, whilst Kevin Flynn ran once again in Porterstown. In a field of 78, Kevin placed 69th in 38:31. Aidan Hudner ran once again in Pollok in Glasgow, where, in a field of 254, he placed 54th in 24:18, whilst Orlaith de Burca and Niamh Quinn ran once again in Shanganagh. Orlaith placed 132nd and 47th in 30:09, whilst Niamh placed 157th and 64th in 31:41. The field measured 203. Finally, Emer Kenny and Tanja Narancic took on Marlay Park. In a field of 517, Emer placed 219th and 50th in 28:29, with Tanja right behind in 220th and 51st in 28:31. Cork BHAA John Buckley 5k road race (897) Overall place Name Cat. On a mild and windless day in Dublin, nearly 1,200 runners took part in the Irish Runner 5k that incorporated the national championships. The race was organised on what is becoming a reasonably familiar loop nowadays in the northwest corner of the park on Chesterfield, Ordnance Survey and Furze Roads, but also including the challenging diversion via the Furry Glen and up the steep hill on the switchback towards the top of the Upper Glen Road. There is also the deceptively long finish straight along the Furze Road. One might not automatically think of it as being a PB course. However, at least three of the 13 Crusaders who took part ran their fastest times so far for the distance. Ger Forde was one of them. In Addition to leading our contingent home in 36th place, he also recorded a PB time of 16:22. He may have been helped by the presence of Ciaran Diviney who finished just behind him in 38th place in a time of 16:28, Ciaran having overtaken Ger early in the race. Ger placed 4th M40, whilst Ciaran was the first M50 to cross the line. They were followed by Alex Ainsworth, another runner recording a PB, placing 53rd in 16:56, and he had Paul Cowhie not so far behind (63rd and 2nd M55 in 17:03). Cathal O’Hara was next (136th in 18:43), followed by Eoghan Kerins (180th in 19:06) and Cormac Fenton (193rd in 19:17, a possible PB). Neil Brown has been knocking on the door of a sub-20 minutes finish recently and he finally achieved it on Saturday morning, and in style, with a 19:39 PB time, coming home in 213th place. Behind Neil came Alan Kavanagh (346th in 21:42), Will Holton (352nd in 21:43), Michael Judge (444th in 21:58), Elad Solomon (447th in 23:25) and Paul E. Kelly (740th in 29:15). At time of writing, we are waiting to see if Ciaran Diviney will be successful in being included in the national championship results having signed up late. If he is included, then the team of Ger, Ciaran and Paul will have won the O/35 team silver and Ciaran will have won individual M50 gold. In any event, Paul has won the silver medal in the M55 age category. Fingers crossed! Earlier in the week we were treated to an amazing 5k race in Co. Kildare, part of the Peugeot Series. On a fast course which was generally flat, but with a slight climb early on and a slight downhill finish, in the field of 744, there were nearly 50 runners who broke 16 minutes and nearly 400 who broke 20 minutes, including 50 women. It was a really strong field and graced by the presence of 7 Crusaders, all of whom broke 20 minutes. The group was led across the line by a highly satisfied Brian O’Kelly in 6th place, finishing for the first time since early 2020 in under 15 minutes (14:56). Brian was followed by new member Saoirse McGrath with a super time of 18:34 for 260th overall (40th female finisher) closely followed by Danielle Hopkins also running strongly (264th and 42nd in 18:40). Kathryn Sweeney and Kathryn Gibbons were not too far behind (in 298th and 49th and 309th and 52nd, respectively) in respective times of 19:05 and 19:06, with Phelim Murray, in his second race in as many days, in 323rd in 19:18. To cap off a great performance by the runners, Sarah Lyons placed 340th and 60th in a PB time of 19:28. In the team competition, the team of Saoirse, Danielle and Kathryn Sweeney placed 9th out of 50 in the competition. On Friday evening there was yet another quality 5k, this time in Leixlip. The anti-clockwise looped course had its fair share of hills, finishing on the Le Cheile track, with which many of our members will be familiar. There were 206 runners in the race, including 4 Crusaders. Kevin Fitzgibbon recorded a PB time of 16:13 for his 4th place and he was followed by Karl Fitzmaurice (14th in 17:33). Charles-Edouard Cattier, preparing for the Edinburgh marathon next weekend, was next, in 26th place and a great time of 18:24 and he was followed by Irene Gorman whose 29th place overall in a super time of 18:36, was good enough to put her into second place behind Sportsworld’s Aoife O’Leary. Members may be interested to hear that Sean Murphy, who trains with us from time to time, ran 19:04 for 41st place. There were other road races over the weekend in which Crusaders appeared, notably including the 10k and half marathon in the Fastlane Series. These races took place as usual on the Grand Canal towpath with a relatively flat loop around the Grangecastle business park, the half marathon including two of these loops. We had one runner in the 10k. In a field of 440, Tanja Narancic placed 141st and 22nd (7th F40) in a time of 52:50, whilst we had 8 Crusaders in the half marathon. In a field of 728 finishers, Jim Stagg, making a welcome return to racing, placed 8th in 80:27. Jim was followed by Donatas Jocius, in training for the world mountain championships in a few weeks (15th in 82:53) and by James Donlon, back from Australia (32nd in 88:11). Triona Quill was next (162nd, 22nd and 5th F50 in 1:42:03) and Triona was followed by Anna Hoesl (205th and 33rd in 1:44:37), Joe Green (207th in 1:44:40), Liam O’Brien (259th in 1:48:26) and Phil Sykes (376th in 1:53:40). Finally, in Ireland, we had one runner in the LSA 4-mile race that took part on the tarmac paths around Balcarrick and Donabate Golf Clubs. On a fairly flat course with a slight incline to the finish, Aitor Arribas Velasco joined 300 other runners, placing 91st in 30:29. Further afield, Lukasz Batruch ran in the 3-Country Half marathon conducted near to Basle in Switzerland, including also Luxembourg and Germany. Lukasz ran 1:42:40. Kevin Lambe took advantage of a holiday on the French island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean to run in La Ronde des Goyaviers, a 24k trail race with a climb of 753m, which Kevin completed in 2:52. Our exiles in Australia, Eoghan Walsh and Deirdre Kennedy raced this weekend. Eoghan took part in the Sydney half marathon where he finished in 1:26:23, whilst Deirdre ran in the Sydney 10k, finishing in a time of 55:45. Esther Requena Ferri won another race in her native Spain. This was a 4k race (the Carrera urbana El Torcal de Antequera) which she completed in 15:20. Meanwhile, closer to home, Margaret Foley and Kate O’Malley took part in the Hackney Half marathon in northeast London. Kate ran 1:26:59, whilst Margaret ran 1:41:05. There was, as usual, a midweek race in the Leinster League organised by IMRA in Co. Wicklow. This one involved a distance of 8.5k and a climb of 410m to the summit of Scarr. The course was described as difficult, but fully marked on this occasion. Becky Quinn won the women’s race in 48:25, placing 15th overall in a field of 169, whilst ahead of her came Jason Kehoe (6th in 46:51) and Warren Swords (10th in 47:36). Later, Ian Clifford followed in 84th place in a time of 63:23 and had Gavan Doherty behind him (109th in 68:29). We had quite a lot of activity in the parkruns this weekend, both far and near and, as usual, we had some podium finishes. 17 Crusaders joined the field of 176 in Poolbeg, with first finish places going to Both Ross Neill (1st in 17:36) and Carmel Cooney (9th overall in 20:36). They were accompanied by Michael Wycherley (3rd in 18:31), Michael Fitzsimons (5th in 19:09), Sharon Woods (31st and 4th in 23:14), Áine Kenny (33rd and 5th in 23:20), Russell Murphy (34th in 23:24), Fiona Bane (41st and 7th in 23:55), Julian Callan (53rd in 24:35), James Bradshaw (57th in 24:41), Gillian Curran (82nd and 20th in 25:33), Josie Ward (96th and 24th in 26:28), Maureen McGinley (114th and 32nd in 27:40), Máirín Shine (120th and 41st in 28:45), Lisa Shine (130th and 42nd in 28:49), Anna Shine (133rd and 44th in 28:53) and Djinn von Noorden, tailwalking.
